Introduction
A Light Dependent Resistor is a device with a resistance which varies according to the amount of light falling on its surface. The resistance decreases as the intensity of incident light increases, and vice versa. In the absence of light, LDR exhibits a resistance of the order of mega-ohms which decreases to few hundred ohms in the presence of light. It can act as a sensor, since a varying voltage drop can be obtained in accordance with the varying light. It is made up of cadmium sulphide (CdS).

A LDR has a zigzag cadmium sulphide track. It is a bilateral device, that means this conducts in both directions in same fashion. The photograph is shown above.

Experimenting with a LDR

AIM: To connect a LDR in the brain board and test the same with multimeter , To connect a LED , buzzer and give a demonstration of functioning of the LDR Boards and parts required: Brain board Junior , General purpose auxiliary boards, Battery module with 4 AA cells, 2 digital multimeter s, LDR , Piezoelectric Buzzer and LEDs and the Connecting cables. Expt 1: To find the LDR's dark resistance value and bright lighted resistance value The circuit diagram and the wired board are shown below.

Wire the board as shown above by reading the circuit diagram. Switch on the

multimeter to the OHMS range and set it to the range 20k. In anormally lighted room the value will be read any where between 5 k to 15 k during 11 AM to 2 PM. Now move your hands near the LDR to form a shadow and see that the resistance value increases. When it goes above 20k switch the meter range to 200 k and further close the LDR with your palms. The resistance increases with decreasing of the light incident on the LDR and when it increases above 200K switch the meter range to 2000k. Based on the darkness created by your palm the value goes near 1600k and above. Now carry the board to the sun light and see the value decreases to 400 bu switching the meter range to 2000. This shows the functioning of the LDR. Expt 2: To glow LED's through LDR varying light with light The circuit schematic diagram and the wired board are shown below.
LDR

Wire the components as shown in the circuit board. Connect the plus wire and see that the LED is glowing and the voltage and read the current drawn by the LED in the meter. Move the palm close to the LDR and the glow reduces as the LDR resistance increases. Watch the movie to see the working of this model. In the place of the LED connect the piezoelectric buzzer and check. As the piezoelectric buzzer needs more current to sound. Carry the board near to the direct sunlight and see the buzzer sounds. Watch this is also in the movie. Happy and Cheer full Experimentation
