Over the past 30 years, GHD has gained a high level of local and international recognition for cost-effective, practical, and innovative methods used in tailings design and management. GHD is represented on national and international technical committees including AIMM and
ANCOLD.

Our experience
WMC Olympic Dam Project, South Australia GHD was commissioned to assess the risk of inrush into the backfill quarry from the tailings, wastewater and other infrastructure at the Olympic Dam mine site. A risk assessment process was developed based on the AS/NZ 4360 model. This incorporated the Failure Mode Effect Criticality Analysis (FMECA) method and included risk workshops with the operators. Mt Rosser Red Mud Pond, Jamaica GHD carried out a technical peer review of Alcan International's plans for the closure and rehabilitation of a residue dam in the seismically active limestone hills of Jamaica. The work covered issues such as post-closure provisioning, developing relinquishment criteria, statutory controls, process options for the removal of water, and engineering solutions that minimised risk. Cannington Mine, Queensland

Freeport Copper Mine, Indonesia GHD reviewed tailings disposal options after lowlands infrastructure was threatened by flooding. A disposal plan was developed that limited environmental damage to existing areas, including levees to protect the infrastructure and additional levees to prevent plugging of adjacent rivers. Alcan (Nabalco) Gove Project, Northern Territory GHD has provided services to Alcan Gove (Nabalco) since 1986. The work has included long-term (35 years +) tailings discharge and water management planning, geotechnical advice, and design and construction supervision of tailings embankments. Advice has covered low density and thickened mud, upstream raising, dry stacking and mud farming. Multi-pond water balance models and 3D mud filling models have been developed as planning aids. Argyle Diamonds, Western Australia GHD designed the initial tailings storages at Argyle based on two stages, one each for fine and coarse tailings based on upstream construction methods. The firm was then engaged to investigate seismic risk, and design a safe system to provide additional tailings storage due to a doubling of production. Design and construction services followed. Boddington Gold, Western Australia This tailings storage is staged with the external walls raised by upstream construction on very soft tailings. GHD designed a central liquor reclaim system comprising a structural causeway that is raised as the tailings rise. This causeway won an Engineering Excellence Award from The Institution of Engineers, Australia. Hazelwood Power Station Ash Ponds, Victoria GHD has advised on ash management for many years. Works include developing a twin ash pond system, supervision of redevelopment of existing ash dams, and undertaking studies into long-term ash disposal that includes in pit and dense phase disposal options.

Comalco Alumina Refinery, Queensland GHD has been involved with this project from an early stage including input to the evaluation of sites in Malaysia and Australia. Concept design evaluated factors to gain approval in principal from the regulators and included evaluation of seepage, construction and operation impacts and closure requirements. Detailed design of the tailings storage area called for close liaison with the client to develop operating and closure plans. Kelian Equatorial Mining, Indonesia GHD provided various services for this tailings dam complex. A due diligence study, review of water quality management and an alternative operating methods report resulted in defining potential risks and recommending operational changes to minimise risks. GHD also prepared a change of deposition method operations manual that successfully extended the life of the tailings storage by five years at minimal cost. Gosowong Gold Project, Indonesia GHD carried out feasibility and detailed designs of the tailings dam and provided recommendations for the surface water management of the waste dumps and plant site. The work involved site selection, geotechnical analyses, selection of disposal and tailings storage methods, water balance and groundwater attenuation analyses, and all engineering design and documentation. Mt Keith Nickel Mine, Western Australia GHD was appointed lead consultant on the development of a new centralised tailings discharge system. GHD's role included process development, preliminary design, detailed design, environmental review and construction and commissioning phase assistance. This successful project won an Engineering Excellence Award from The Institution of Engineers, Australia.

Successful tailings and mine waste management must incorporate many disciplines to produce safe and reliable solutions. GHD provides many of these skills in-house and customises project teams to provide a focused service that meets client needs.
Our multidisciplinary teams include:

GHD provided engineering design, documentation and construction advice for the initial and staged tailings storage facility, the operations manual, annual engineering inspections for licence compliance, and pre-feasibility and feasibility studies to accommodate future mine expansions. Eurallumina, Sardinia, Italy Since the early 1990's GHD has designed environmentally acceptable methods of storing additional red mud on an existing disposal site. This includes water balance calculations, progressive storage enlargement by upstream raising and groundwater protection. The work involved converting an existing downstream bauxite residue storage to upstream construction. Pasminco Rosebery Mine, Tasmania GHD has provided advice on tailings management for over 20 years. Recent works include a risk assessment of the operating tailings dam and two decommissioned tailings dams. GHD subsequently undertook stability and liquefaction analyses of the dams and upgraded their monitoring and surveillance systems.
