In Developmental Psychology, Sex-role typing begins literally at birth. Babies are identified as male or female by the colors of their blankets and wrappers and they are treated as male or female by family members who emphasize their maleness or femaleness to those who come to see and admire the new baby. Room furnishings as well as clothing and toys best exemplify this sex-role tying. Sex role typing is also reinforced by teachers and the school. As a result, by the time babies emerge into early childhood, the foundations for sex-appropriate behavior have already been laid though the sexrole stereotypes that serve as guidelines for this typing are still largely unfamiliar to babies, until early childhood were these foundations are explicitly laid down, this is what they call the critical age in sex-role typing. Sex-role stereotypes are constellations of meanings associated with members of the male and members of the female sex. 1 These meanings relate to the approved appearance and body build of the individual; the approved type of clothing, speech, and the way to behave in relation to the members of the other sex; and the approved way to earn a living during the adult years. So far there are two types of stereotyping, the traditional sex-role stereotypes and egalitarian sex-role stereotypes. Whether children will learn traditional or egalitarian sex-role typing will depend on the pressures and opportunities given in the home. Further, sex-role typing is reinforced or unraveled gradually as new meanings are added and interrelated to old meanings in the constellations of meanings. While different children may learn sex-role stereotypes in different ways, the usual pattern is fairly predictable. Children first learn that they are girls and others are boys, that some adults are women and some are men. Then they learn that certain possessions are regarded as appropriate for one sex while others are regarded as appropriate for the other sex. They discover that certain personality characteristics and patterns of behavior are associated with one sex while others are associated with the other sex. Gradually, they learn that males play certain roles in childhood as well as in adulthood while female play other roles. These roles (shown in the chart) are classic examples of norms assigned by society to guide the behaviors of each individual so that acceptable performance is rewarded and nonconformity is frowned upon. It is such that mens role number one makes grown up men prone to heart diseases more than women for the very simple reason that men are not to be seen publicly crying, a blemish to his image as a strong public figure. On the other hand, women crying in public are acceptable. Modern medicine has already showed concern regarding these roles. They have taken interested in studying other sources of mens fatality issues especially heart issues. Women are less likely to suffer heart diseases because they have emotional releases by simply crying and sharing their feelings to others while men just keep them locked up inside. Nowadays, roles are changing or collapsing. It is now acceptable for men to cry. This is one example that society too is evolving. All the changes must be welcomed. People must be open-minded about changing norms and people exposed to liberal ideas and the larger communities (i.e. global community) are more understanding of the changing and emerging roles that are no longer categorically traditional or egalitarian. Roles per se are not limited to one group or the other. Opportunities expand and include both sexes thus stereotyping may be a way to differentiate boys from girls, man from woman, but in an evolving society one must be at least not limit oneself to opportunities simply because his or her sex grouping says so. Another, it would be futile to fight evolution, since we all know that what was once not accepted ages ago are no longer taboos today. The picture painted by modern society is a different picture compared to what was before. Man compliments woman. Man is no longer exclusive of the male gender. Gender sensitivity is now the in-thing. The present time show both the sexes emerging with responsibilities and roles that are no longer viewed as traditionally typified. Man and woman for me, though they may differ still, are made complimentary to their opposites and serve better the whole humanity if they are seen that way.
