THE WRIGHT DESIGN

1. INTRODUCTION
Its 25 January 2020. Following an unprecedented onset of military events on the rugged mountainous international border the enemy is preparing for an air strike on one of your remote infantry outpost. The base does not have a large airfield for air superiority fighters to operate from there. A military expert has suggested a rocket assisted plane can be used as a quick reaction fighter. The plane would be launched from a truck using a rocket booster to defend the base.

2. MISSION STATEMENT
To design, build, and test fly a water rocket powered glider. The rocket-glider system should be capable of being launched from the ground at an initial angle only by means of water rocket. Note: A water rocket employs a compressed gas to accelerate water through its nozzle as a means of propulsion . The bottle is partially filled with water and then the air inside the bottle is compressed. The compressed air pushes down the water and this propels the rocket forward. For more information on water rockets please see the Resources Tab of Wright Design in the www.shaastra.org Only heavier than air gliders are permitted. Gas filled balloons, airships etc. cannot be used. Ready to fly water rockets which can be purchased are not allowed.

3. GLIDER SPECIFICATIONS
3.1. The wing span of the glider should not be less than 30 centimeters and should not be greater than 1.5 meters. 3.2. The only means of launching the rocket-glider system from the ground is through the water rocket mechanism. No other power source like electric motors, IC Engines, Chemical Rockets, or Balloons should be used. 3.3. Specifications of the water rocket mechanism will be specified in the next section. 3.4. The launch platform for the glider-rocket will have to be made by the participants. The launch platform should not mechanically give the rocket an initial boost. The launch platform must be capable of launching the rocket at 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 75 degrees.

4. WATER ROCKET SPECIFICATIONS

4.1. Plastic bottle(s) (we suggest soft drink bottles) of maximum 2 liter capacity each (by volume) should only be used as the pressure vessels for your propulsion mechanism. Extensions to the body like wings, fins or other structural members are allowed but they should not be used as pressure vessels in any manner. 4.2. The total empty volume of bottles used as pressure vessels should not exceed 7 liters in any case. 4.3. The water rockets will be pressurized using a cycle air pump/ or a compressor with an attached pressure gauge which will be provided by the coordinators. The maximum pressure that can be provided by the pump/compressor will be specified soon in the event website. The dimensions and the image of the pump will soon be available on the website. 4.4. The hose from the pump will be connected to the non return valve by a threading mechanism. Hence participants are expected to use non return valves which have threading which fits into a cycle pump outlet. 4.5. The rocket should have a trigger/pressure release mechanism attached. You will be allowed to manually pull the trigger by hand from a minimum distance of two meters from the rocket for safety reasons. 4.6. Only water should be used as the propellant. No other chemicals, carbonating agents. Fizzing tablets, pyrotechnics etc should be used. Water will be provided at the venue. 4.7. Participants are advised to make the water rocket in such a way that it is not damaged on landing as a minimum of two flights will have to be made.

4.8. Irrespective of the number of bottles used, the coordinators will provide only one air pump outlet to pressurize your rocket .

5. FLIGHT TESTING
The arena for flight testing is shown below:

5.1. Flight Testing Part 1: Launch at 45 degrees and Straight Gliding Flight Here the glider would be launched at an angle of 45 degrees with the horizontal along OA. The point at which the glider lands will be marked and the radial distance of this point from launch point will be measured. Participants can choose at what angle they want to launch their rocket. Participants should however, ensure that the rocket remains within the arena boundary, failing which they will be disqualified from the round. Detailed scoring formulae are provided in the Scoring Formulae section later. 5.2. Flight Testing Part 2: Launch the rocket at different angles Again the glider will be launched from the same point .This time the plane will have to be launched from two different launch angles of 60degrees and 75 degrees. Scoring formula for this round will be given in the next section.

6. SCORING
All teams will be ranked on a scale of 1-100. The score break up will be as follows: 6.1. Presentation about design and theoretical analysis to Judges: 50 % 6.2. Flight Testing Performance : 50 % 6.2.1. Flight Testing Part 1 and Part 2:

Score 1 = Horizontal Range Covered (meters) when launch angle is 45 degrees Score 2 = Horizontal Range Covered (meters) when launch angle is 60 degrees and 75 degrees.

Total Score S = Presentation Score + Score 1 + Score 2r

7. RULES
7.1. Each team can have a maximum of 4 students, from any branch and any college. 7.2. No entry shall be accepted if the write-up has not been submitted on time. The submission details about this write-up (TDP) will be up on website soon. 7.3. In case of any changes in design after the write-up submission, they must be communicated to the event coordinators well in advance. Any team which has copied a design or changed the design (after write up submission) without informing the organizing team will be disqualified 7.4. Any glider which doesnt meet the weight and size requirements will be disqualified. 7.5. The gliders can be built with any materials except metals or any other sharp materials that may pose a threat to the safety of audience.

7.6. The coordinators will not be responsible for the performance of the flier. 7.7. Participants must make all parts of the gliders themselves. Usage of Ready-to-Fly (RTF) and AlmostReady-to-Fly (ARF) kits are strictly prohibited. 7.8. The organisers reserve the right to mark the landing point and no objections from the participating teams will be entertained. Note : All decisions taken by the coordinators are final and binding.

Note: All text marked in red are modified in comparison to the first problem statement Wright_Design- Problem Statement v.1

8. SAFETY
Water rocketry is full of fun but there exists potential threat of injury from bottles blasting due to excess pressure, premature launch etc. Hence all participants are advised to take adequate safety precautions while operating water rockets. The coordinators will not be responsible for any damage to property or personal injury in any case.

Problem Statement, Rules and Scoring may change and all changes shall be reflected in the Shaastra Website. And hence, the teams are responsible for keeping themselves well informed about the event.
