2000-2003 ASHRAE HandbookCD ********************************************************* Please Note: The following README.

TXT file contains valuable information about this product, including information to help optimize your use of it. We suggest that you read through this document, especially if you are having problems with installation or running the application. ******************************************************** Installing the Handbook to your Hard Drive ******************************************************** You may install the ASHRAE Handbook to your hard drive by opening the file, installHB.exe, from the root directory of your CD drive. This option will create a "2000-2003 ASHRAE Handbook" program group to your START menu, create a shortcut icon on your desktop, and allow you to access the files without using the CD. Windows 9x or later and at least 404 MBs of hard disk space are required to install both I-P and SI editions. Installing only the I-P or SI edition requires approximately 203 (I-P) or 205 (SI) MBs. Unless you changed the path during installation, the Handbook files will be located in: "C:\Program Files\2000-2003 ASHRAE Handbook\". To uninstall, go to START>Programs>2000-2003 ASHRAE Handbook and select the uninstall option. *Note for Windows NT users only: If you choose to create a Quick Launch icon during installation it may not be installed. However, you will be able to create a program group and a desktop icon. ******************************************************** Viewing movie Files ******************************************************** Chapter 31, in 2003 HVAC Applications contains links to MPEG movies. An MPEG (video) player is required to view these movies. Most systems already have a default player installed (Windows Media or QuickTime). If you do not already have one installed on your system, you may download free players from any of the below sites: RealOne Player or RealPlayer: http://www.realnetworks.com/info/freeplayer/ Windows Media Download page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp Quick Time Download Page: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ ******************************************************** Using the CD

******************************************************** To enjoy all functions of this product, Acrobat Reader 5.0 with Acrobat Search or later is recommended. This CD will also run with Acrobat Reader 4.0 with Search. If you already have it installed, then no installation is required. Simply open the file named START.PDF located in the root directory of this disk to access chapters from the ASHRAE HandbookCD. The first time that you try to use the Acrobat search feature you will need to point your Acrobat reader to the search index. When the Adobe Acrobat search window appears, if the "Search" button is grayed out: - click on the "Indexes" button. - then click on the "Add" button - then look in the IP or SI folder and - click on the file named "IP_INDEX or SI_INDEX.pdx" - click the "Open" button if it still presents itself - click the "OK" button - then type the word(s) you want to find and - click the "Search" button. The next time you need to do a search, Acrobat will already know how to do it. If you need to install Acrobat Reader with Acrobat Search read on..... ******************************************************** System Requirements ******************************************************** Listed below are the minimum requirements for running Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.05 with Acrobat Search and the ASHRAE HandbookCD. You must have the Search option installed in order to use the Search functions on this CD. Windows: Intel Pentium processor; Microsoft Windows 95 OSR 2.0, Windows 98 SE, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5, Windows 2000, or Windows XP; 64MB of RAM; 24MB of available hard-disk space We do not recommend running the ASHRAE HandbookCD application with less than the minimum requirements. The program may operate, but with reduced performance. ******************************************************** Acrobat Reader Installers and Instructions ******************************************************** INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: If you are unable to install Acrobat Reader from this CD or need a different version for your system, you may freely download it from Adobe s website at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. ---------WINDOWS '98, NT, 2000 & XP Running the CD-ROM This CD features Autorun software to simplify running this CD and installing Acrobat ReaderTM. If Autorun is disabled you may begin accessing the files on this CD by opening

START.pdf in the CD s root directory. If Autorun is disabled and you need to install Acrobat Reader 5.05 with Search on your system, open the file, rp505enu.exe, found on the CD in the Windows folder. ******************************************************** Installation Questions: ******************************************************** Please e-mail installation questions to comments@ashrae.org. ******************************************************** Screen Resolution: ******************************************************** If images are not being properly displayed (strange color changes, missing items on the screen, etc.), try resetting your video driver to 640x480 at 256 colors. Windows sometimes has difficulty displaying colors and positioning objects on the screen using certain video drivers or fonts - a lower resolution setting can sometimes help minimize these problems. If you are running at a higher resolution (800x600 or 1024x768, for example), try setting your video driver to Small Fonts instead of Large Fonts. ******************************************************** Screen Flashes: ******************************************************** When you have a computer in 256 color mode, Windows uses 256 colors at one time. Windows may change which colors it is using periodically as a program is run. This can cause the screen to briefly 'flash' as Windows readjusts the colors that are in use. This may happen, for instance, when the ASHRAE HandbookCD changes from one display to another or when a new graphic appears on the screen. The flash that you see is a perfectly normal side effect of Windows 'remapping' its color palette and should not be cause for concern. ******************************************************** TSR and Virus Scan Programs: ******************************************************** TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs such as anti-viral scanners, network drivers, and screen savers should be disabled during the installation process if you are encountering problems. Often times, the presence of these programs interferes with the installation program's ability to properly create and/or modify files necessary for running the ASHRAE HandbookCD. Such interference can create a defective installation. See the documentation of any programs using TSRs or virus scanning for more information about turning them off for installation of the ASHRAE HandbookCD. ******************************************************** 2000-2003 ASHRAE HandbookCD 2003 American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc.
