Week #1 8/13-8/16
NOTE TO TEACHERS: o Whenever students do something in writing that goes in their composition books, it is referred to as an Activity. o These include Reading Response Journals, weekly reflections, and notes on character lessons etc. o All Activities are to be numbered and written in the composition book. o Students will make a Table of Contents on the back of the first page and leave 2 (physical) pages blank for the numbered activities (over 100 this semester!). o Handouts o For teachers: All teacher handouts are in this binder. o For Students: The handouts they receive from teachers are clearly identified as HANDOUTS under Materials at the bottom of each week below. Logistics: You may choose to skip some activities or go out of order due to the pace of your individual class. When you do so, you should make notations in your teacher binder and make sure your students Table of Contents reflect those changes. The first ten (8) activities are numbered(e.g., Activity #3), and then appear as Activity # to accommodate changes (skipped or added) to the activities used in your class. In the appendix, there are several pages of icebreakers (and reading response items) that can be used at any time to allow for flexibility and/or technology glitches. Tuesday 8/13 Introductions- Teacher introduces self with a few key facts. You are modeling how to introduce yourself. Pass out programs/sign them Pass out index cards for parent/guardian information. o Instruct the students to fill in their name, email, phone # and their parents names, emails and phone #s for contact information while you are signing program cards. You may also want them to write down some hobby or fun fact. It is important to do this right at the beginning so you dont have to ask for a parent phone number in the middle of a crisis. Hand out composition books. Students put their names on books. o Students label first page Schedule and copy their class schedule o Students label the back of the first page Table of Contents. o Leave 2 (physical) pages blank for table of contents Label next page Activity #1 o Activity #1- Write down 3 things you will share as you introduce self to class. o Each student introduces self to class briefly o Collect and store composition books for daily use
Wednesday 8/14 Pass out composition books. o Students will use these every day. . New Students o label first page Table of Contents o Leave 2 pages blank for table of contents o Copy class schedule onto 4th page of composition book Schedules- Make sure any new students have their schedules. o Check for appropriate grade level courses and requirements. Make necessary referrals to counselors. Pass out Advisory Syllabus HANDOUT. Go over it with students Pass out CHS expectations HANDOUT and go over it. Demonstrate School Loop Registration with laptop and projector and begin registering students if possible. (An important point about student registration is that the m or f in their ID number must be lower case as they input it.) Students can register themselves on their smart phones. HWo Register self and parents on School Loop o Bring back signed syllabus Return and store composition books. Thursday 8/15 Pass out composition books. Rules for Advisory: o This is a class activity. Ask students in partner pairs to come up with 3 good rules for Advisory class. Have volunteers write them on the board. Discuss the importance of rules and consolidate list. This is a valuable activity to get students involved and empowered as they consider their new environment. Now is the time to set up your year! Review/Discuss CHS expectations Pass out Spacebook HANDOUTS. o These are like non-digital Facebook pages. o With a document reader or on the board, demonstrate for the students how you would fill in the Spacebook profile. This is also another opportunity for students to get to know you as you model the assignment. o Students fill in and share in small groups. o Activity #2- Glue or staple Spacebook handout into composition book Return and store composition books. Friday 8/16 Pass out composition books. If you didnt get a chance for everyone to finish and share the Spacebook handouts yesterday, you can start with a little more time for this.
Activity #4- What new ideas about the importance or meaning of music, songs in childhood do you have after our discussion? Let students know that independent reading will be an important part of Advisory and they should start thinking about what kind of book they would like to read. Return and store composition books. Daily Check-You may train your students to do a daily check for their preparation for their classes that day. Discuss the following with them and have them work with a partner while you walk around to assess their: 1. Attitude- How are they feeling today? How can they bring a positive outlook to their upcoming classes? 2. Materials- What materials are they supposed to have for their classes? Do they have these? What can they do if they dont? 3. Homework/Assignments- What homework/assignments are due in their classes today? How prepared are they? Is there anything they can do now? Week #2
Students must remind Parents to come to Back to School Night, Thursday, August 22nd. It will be a period-by-period overview of each class for parents. Teachers will conduct PowerPoint presentations and provide course syllabi. NOTE: Remember to pass out composition books at the beginning of each period. Students return and store them at the end of every period. Have students check their assignments for the day in their other classes at the end of every period. Tuesday 8/20 Do Materials check o Pen o Pencil o School binder with sections for classes o Loose leaf paper o Glue stick o Composition book (kept in room) Thinking about reading for pleasure o Activity #5- Write down all the books you remember reading. What ones did you like the best? Why? o Students share journal with partner. Volunteers share with class. Lead discussion about why they liked different books. What makes a good book? Why do people read? o Discussion: How to pick a book that is right for you. Why read? What are some of your favorite books? Project and discuss ideas on How to Choose a Just Right Book (teacher only handout) Suggest Book Swap- Students bring in a book they have enjoyed reading that they can lend to a classmate for Thursdays book check HW1. Bring an independent reading book on Thursday. 2. Also bring a book to share/trade for independent reading. 3. Tell parents about Back to School Night on Thursday. (offer extra credit if they come). Character Lesson #1- Constructive Language Handout (teacher only) follow instructions Review/Discuss Character Lesson #1: Constructive LanguageCompliments & Criticism on overhead. Have students list some of their own responses to compliments & criticisms in their comp book. Ask students to model what they have learned in pairs or small groups. Have students use their comp book to also answer the Technology Point question: What will your language say about you? Activity #6 Students write a T chart of responses to compliments and criticisms in their comp. book Discuss with partner HW1. Bring an independent reading book on Thursday. 2. Week 3
Monday 8/26 Independent Reading Start a new focused reading strategy (for this week) from appendix o Teachers will choose and introduce to students a reading strategy (from the many possibilities provided) to concentrate on this week. Students will use this strategy in journaling after their Independent Reading this week. (Approx. 5 min) An alternative to this might be to use sample Reading Journal. o Students and teachers engage in Independent Reading for approximately 15 minutes, after which students, journal in a section of their composition book set aside for Independent Reading. Independent Reading and Journaling o Activity #__ Reading Response Journal The Civility Project Tools #2 Listen o Students practice body language of listening o Review/Discuss and discuss Character Lesson #2: Back to School Poster #2 from Speak Your Peace: The Civility Project on Listen. Use overhead to share and discuss information. Give students @ 3 minutes to respond to one of the bulleted quotes and then share out in class. Students in pairs: o Discuss how to organize your binder(s) and notebooks and why you should do it Explain rules for Binder check and have students complete a peer binder
