The Need:

In recent years the field of Renewable Energy has been increasingly becoming a popular career option for young engineers. Although the number of such professionals have also been growing, the demand of skilled professional did not rise significantly till 2010. Solar energy received the desired attention with the launch of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in June 2010 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India. This ambitious mission of the Govt. of India targets the total solar installations of 22,000 MW by the year 2022. The main objective of this mission is to establish India as global leader in Solar Energy. According to the mission statement, the rapid and large scale diffusion of Solar Energy will require a concomitant increase in technically qualified manpower of international standard. Some capacity already exists in the country, though precise numbers need to be established. However it is envisaged that at the end of mission period, Solar Industry will employ at least 1,00,000 trained and specialized personnel across the skill spectrum. Keeping this need in view, the course aims to impart knowledge and skills required for such jobs. Central Electronics Limited: Central Electronics Limited (CEL) is a Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Science and Technology. CEL is the pioneer in India in the field of Solar Photovoltaic and has a large skilled work force in this field. With an experience of over 38 years, CEL has expertise in all the segments of Solar Photovoltaic industry right from Solar Cells to full fledged Solar Power Plants.

Courses: CEL proposes to at launch a series of job oriented training programme in various fields of engineering. To begin with, the following certificate programmes will commence in September, 2013:(i) Solar Photovoltaic Systems - Installation, Commissioning, Operation and Maintenance Manufacturing of Solar Cells and Modules

(ii)

Duration: 6 months (September, 2013 March, 2014) Eligibility: Diploma in engineering from a recognised institution with minimum 60% marks in Diploma. Program Contents: The program will be divided into two phases. The first phase will consist of Theory classes as well as practicals for 3 months. The second phase will be in the form of on-site/shop-floor training for a period of 3 months. The broad course contents will be as follows: (A) i) Classes and laboratories: Solar Photovoltaic Systems - Installation, Commissioning, Operation and Maintenance ( 3 months) SPV Systems: The students will get an opportunity to familiarise with various types of SPV Systems and the basic concepts and underlying principles of these systems.

System Components: This section will deal in detailed study of various sub-systems of a Solar PV System like the Storage batteries, Charge Controller, Inverters, Power Conditioners, Solar Pumps etc. The students will also be exposed to the techniques of sizing of a large variety of Solar Power Systems, both stand-alone as well as grid-tied. The students will also learn about different aspects of solar water pumps. The students will also get familiar with the latest products and trends in SPV technologies. Field Practices: This section will expose the students to engineering practices and different standards, being adopted in Solar PV installations. They will have a chance to learn about preparing a series of documents, like Bill of Materials (BOMs), layouts, drawings, manuals etc. and the implementation of these in their installation projects. Various aspects of preventive and break-down maintenance will also be explained. Electronics for SPV: The students will be given basic knowledge about the electronic theories and principles behind the operation of all the electronics equipment like charge controllers, inverters, power conditioners etc. They will also get the knowledge of basic circuits of various appliances operating on Solar Energy. ii) Manufacturing of Solar Cells & Modules ( 3 months) Semiconductor Physics: The students will be given detailed knowledge about the basics of semiconductor physics and underlying principles of Solar PV cells and modules. They will be exposed to a number of techniques using the principles of SPV for producing power using a no. Of technologies. Solar Cell Manufacturing: This section will teach in detail the student about different steps of manufacturing of Solar PV cells. They will also learn

about the techniques of inspection, quality control and Test and Measurement of the parameters of solar cells.

Solar Module Manufacturing: This section will teach the students in detail about steps in assembly of solar modules. They will also learn the techniques of inspection, quality control and Test and Measurement of various parameters of Solar Modules. (B) On the Job Training ( 3 months) : The second phase of the courses will expose the students to actual on the job (unpaid) training, on site as well as on the shop-floor. The Classes: The theory and practical classes will be held at the premises of CEL at Site-4, Industrial Area, Sahibabad. Faculty: Eminent professionals/engineers with wide experience in the field of SPV will provide the skill, knowledge and real life experiences. Key Features of Programme: Lectures by experienced engineers in the field of SPV. Certificate by CEL, a PSU under Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. Visit to the actual operating installations of repute.

Examination: All registered students will appear for a written test at the end of the course. Those securing min. Of 50% will be eligible for award of a certificate by CEL.
