Adjustable Flight Control Rod

1. Some adjustable control rods in the flight control system utilize a dual-thread design which allows their length to be adjusted without disconnecting the control rod ends. A central adjusting sleeve can be turned which will lengthen or shorten the rod as desired. 2. Assembly of these control rods must be performed correctly to make sure the maximum amount of adjustment capability is obtained. 3. The following types of dual-thread designs are used in the flight control system and illustrated in Figure 1: a. Internally and externally threaded adjusting sleeve. This type is used on the four control rods from the torque shafts to the pilot assist actuators and the lateral/yaw mixer input control rods. Assemble as follows: (1) Screw threaded adapter into control rod tube until it just passes control rod tube inspection hole. (2) Screw adjustable rod end into sleeve until the inspection hole is covered by jam nut. (3) Hold two ends of control rod and turn adjusting sleeve until correct control rod length is obtained. b. Dual external thread adjusting sleeve. This type is used on the control rod installed between the collective boost actuator and mixer. Assemble as follows: (1) Screw threaded adapter into control rod tube until it just passes control rod tube inspection hole. (2) Screw adjustable rod end onto sleeve until sleeve is just past inspection hole in rod end. (3) Hold two ends of control rod and turn adjusting sleeve until correct control rod length is obtained. c. Dual internal thread adjusting barrel. This type is used on the main rotor servo input control rods. Assemble as follows: (1) Screw threaded adapter onto control rod tube until threads just pass inspection hole in adapter. (2) Screw adjustable rod end onto sleeve until threads are just past inspection hole in adapter. (3) Hold two ends of control rod and turn adjusting sleeve until correct control rod length is obtained.

Flight Control Bearing Inspection

4. Inspect condition of bearings as follows: a. Inspect ball bearings and roller bearings for ratcheting, binding, and seal damage (TM 55-1500-322-24). Refer to Table 1 for action required. b. Inspect spherical bearings for looseness, damage, and extrusion of Telfon liner. NONE ALLOWED. Refer to Table 1 or Table 2 for action required. 5. Using dial indicator, inspect radial play per Table 1

Self-Retaining Bolt Installation 1. Perform self-retaining bolt inspection (WP 1133 00).
Note

A maximum of three washers (not to exceed 0.095 inch), only in thickness combinations indicated in table, can be installed under bolthead so correct nut torque, self-retaining features, and cotter pin installation can be obtained. If more than three washers are required to obtain correct nut torque, self-retaining features, and cotter pin installation substitution of a shorter or longer bolt of the same part number, but with a different dash number is allowed.

2. Refer to Table 3 for proper washer stackup on bolt. 3. Install self-retaining bolt and washers (under bolthead). 4. Check bolt for free axial motion and that impedance feature is not restrained in part. If bolt binds or impedance feature is depressed, change washer stackup using Table 3, or use next longer or shorter bolt. 5. Install nut on bolt. Torque nut to value shown in task, and install cotter pin.
Note

If unable to torque bolthead, use a crowfoot attachment to torque nut, without disturbing cotter pin, and without restraining bolthead. 6. Proof torque bolthead to value shown in task. If bolt rotates, adjust using washers in Table 3, or use next longer or shorter bolt.

Tri-Pivot Connections 1. For flight control tri-pivot connections using AN3 and NAS6203 type bolts refer to Figure 1 and perform installation procedures and gap requirements as follows: a. Install long bushing, NAS77A3 flange-type or NAS76 straight-type, through rod end and slot in lever, and install bolt, AN3 or NAS6203, washer, and nut. TORQUE NUT TO 12 - 20 INCH-POUNDS. (1) Check for free rotation of long bushing using finger force. Using feeler gage, check for 0.002 - 0.125-inch gap between washer and rod end clevis Figure 1. (2) If bushing cannot be rotated and clearance is less than 0.002 inch, use a longer bushing or longer bolt or both to obtain 0 .002 - 0.125-inch gap. Refer to Table 4 and Table 5. (3) If bushing can be rotated and clearance is more than 0.125-inch, use a shorter bushing or shorter bolt or both to obtain 0 .002 - 0.125-inch gap. (4) If bushing cannot be rotated and clearance is 0.002 - 0.125-inch, remove and inspect bushing. (5) Any combination of thick or thin washers (not to exceed three) may be used to obtain proper bolt length for inserting cotter pin. Refer to Figure 1 for cotter pin, MS24665-153 Installation. b. Install short bushing, 70400-00513, in slot on each side of rod end. Install bolt, AN3 or NAS6203, and washer through bushings, rod end and lever. Install nut and torque to 12 to 20 inch-pounds. (1) Check for no rotation of short bushing and using feeler gage, check for 0.002 - 0.125-inch gap between washers and rod end clevis on each side. (2) If clearance is less than 0.002 inch on each side, use longer bushings or longer bolt. Refer to Table 4. (3) If bushings can be rotated and clearance is 0.002 - 0.125-inch, check bolt grip length, bolt may be too long and nut is bottomed on bolt threads. Use a shorter bolt, retorque nuts and recheck for no rotation of bushings and for a clearance of 0 .002 - 0.125-inch. (4) If bushings cannot be rotated and clearance is more than 0.125 inch, use shorter bushings or shorter bolt or both to obtain 0.002 - 0.125-inch gap. (5) Any combination of thick or thin washers (not to exceed three) may be used to obtain proper bolt length for inserting cotter pin. Install cotter pin.

Control Rod Corrosion Protection


Note

Application of corrosion protection compound is performed after installation, adjustment, jam nut torquing, and safety wiring of the control rods is complete.

1. Application of corrosion protection coating is required for the following: a. Torque shaft to boost servo control rods WP 1124 00, WP 1125 00, WP 1127 00 and WP 1128 00. b. Boost servo to mixer control rods WP 1129 00, WP 1131 00 and WP 1132 00. c. Mixer to primary servo control rods WP 1133 00, WP 1134 00 and WP 1135 00. d. Yaw lever to forward quadrant control rod WP 1137 00. e. Tail rotor servo to tail rotor quadrant pushrod WP 1143 00. 2. Determine which corrosion preventive compound is currently applied to control rods: a. Corrosion preventive compound, WP 2012 00, Item 98, is a soft amber gel. b. Corrosion preventive compound, WP 2012 00, Item 104, is a firm black coating.
Note

Application of corrosion protection coating shall be performed after installation, adjustment, jam nut torquing, and lockwiring of control rod is complete.

3. Touch up corrosion protection coating, using the same compound that is currently on surface of control rods. Apply corrosion protection coating to the following areas: All threaded portions Jam nuts Lockwashers Slotted keyways Inspection holes
