FLASH WINGS FOR THE LOPD

NEWS ITEM

FLASH

Thursday, 15 January 1970 was a happy, happy day for

Fd. On that day he received his Private Pilot's License.

(At last!) This ipeans that he can now carry passengers;

So he and Jean can begin their flights to the other islands. )More about this elsewhere in this issue). Let's pray

that these will be wings used in the service of Christ.

This is out first issue of 1970. We hope it finds you and yours in good health and in good spirits. Please note the general report enclosed with this issue. It tells

(although briefly) sorr ething of goals met in 1969 and goals to be met in 1970. ^'uch remains to be done, but we are confident that with God's help, progress can be nsade. We helped move our last family to another part of the island recently and nov; have only one person besides our ovm fairily who are attending regularly. Currently V9e are meeting with another family in their home for Bible study but as yet they have not attended church. V^e seemed to be doing so v/ell at first but one family quit and the others moved their residences out of the area. V'e at e trying every way possible to interest people in studying the Bible with us. If we can just

get a strong nucleus together (that doesn't move out

of the area) we feel that the work will take on a different

appearance to the community and prayer, work, Bible study, prayer, work, and more prayer and work will result souls being won to Christ. Please pray about this!!!
Other plans for '70 are very indefinite. Somehow we want to begin a serious study of the Pacific Islands with
a view towards encouraging other missionaries to enter this vast field (a field, I might add, that has practically no representation from those congregations who choose to follow the Bible alone as their pattern). There are
THOUSANDS of islands in tnis ocean and the people
on each need Christ.

Other plans are gradually shaping up that may take years

to see ftuition.

Concerning these ideas ^nd ideas ate

all that they ate at presen^ we would be most interested

in hearing from pilots, mechanics, ministers, and others even remotely interested in evangelizing the Pacific.
Some ideas include'encouragement to prospective indepen dent missionaries, assistance in communications, and a missionary flying service. As stated, these are just ideas, but if we can share ideas and challenge people,

maybe tlie cause of Christ will expand in the Pacific.

Hopefully January will see us begin regular flights in the iT?ission plane to another island to hold services and Bible study. In viev; of the need at Kailua, this cannot

occupy maeh of out time, ^resent plans call for Sunday

Afternoon and evening to be devoted to outer-island preach ing. Please pray that the seed sown will grow.

MAHALO NUI LOA !

Thanks to each person who lerreirbered us over the holiday season. We received many cards, some gifts to the mis

sion, and some personal gifts. Most important though, is that with nearly each piece of mail there was a line or two at least, btting us know that people v;ere praying for us. V^e have said it many times before and do so

again, the task that is before us is an enormous one and

is much greater than we ate. The ONF^Y way we can meet it is through God's help. YOUP prayers are indeed reeded. Again, we wish to exprrss our appreciation by saying, Mahalo nui loa.

COMMUNICATIONS NOTE

{HA^''S ALERT)

Do you know a ham (amateur radio operator)? If so, he may be able to help you and yout church leaders make radio contact with us on the field. Recently Ed put some amateur radio equipment on the air. The equipment is a kit that Ed built this past yera and is low power, but still effective under the tight conditions. He had built it before our move to Kailua but just now found tim.e to get up an antenna and get the rig on the ait. If you
or yout church leaders would like to make radio contact

with us in this way, give us the name and address of

your Ham friend, and we will do the rest (Check with

him first). This is not a mission project but a personal one, however, we would like to turn this hobby to use
for God. Ed is also a member of CARE (Christian Amateur

Radio EelloA'ship).

CARFFREF CARL

Carl is the Kelsey-Kid-in-the-news this month. fie is GUI fourth child and turned five years old Jan 25. Carl

is really a handful. He is not bad, just all hoy. He runs and plays like each moTTJent might be his last opportunity to do so. In spite of all this play activity, however,
he is a big help to his mother. V'ith the three older child ren in school most of the day, Carl is the oldest of the

two still at home. This makes him feel pretty important. Of course he would gladly relinquish this position if be could go to school, All of our kids love school and
it looks as if Carl will too. !Ie loves to learn and can

already read simple words and do simple arithmetic.

Next Fall he begins kindergarten.

OTHER FA^1ILY HEWS;

Tammy broke her arm falliiig

down while running outside Kew Year's Fve. David fell

out of the same top bunk Tammy did renently and apparent

ly received a light concussion. Tammy is now wearing

glasses. Jean is working part-time. God has been good

to us. As ofthis writing everyone is well. Thank you Lord.

ED & JEM KELSEY", MISSIONARIES

(PIONEERS EOR CHRIST)

Winter 1969-70

This is a general report on the activities of the Ed & Jean Eelsey family who are serving the Lord among the islands, of the Pacific. For additional and current information consult our monthly newsletter(Pioneers for Christ), our monthly financial report (available on request, or write us
a letter.

Perhaps the best way to start this off is to list and comment on

As you know, we worked with the Luttrell family at the Palolo Valley church engaged ourselves in making preparations for beginning anew congregation else where on the island. During the early part of 1969 considerable effort was put forth analyzing each community on Oahu trying to determine the best place to begin the new work. Several places had great need but the greatest potential
aeemed to be in Kailua.

JUNE 16, 1969

In May a house was rented and June 16, 1969 saw the first aervice of Christ's Qhurch in Kailua in this house. The church meets in a large family room and
the Kelaey family live in the home.
SUMER WORKERS & CENSUS

The week after the church began, four Bible College students came and helped us. obnduct a religious census in the area. They were a big help to us and it was

Although there are tens of thousands of people in this area, real prospects are few. The census has been stopped (for new at least) and calling is limited to those people who have been referred to us by friends and past attenders here. but it seems to be very slow. A number of ways are being tried to reach people but the main rec^uirement is time and dillij^ence. If we can apply these two ingredients with God's help success is bound to cornel

HOME

BIBLE

STUDIES

After trying for sometime to begin home Bible studies and/or midweek meetings i t was finally decided to substitutethe Bible study for the Sunday morning sermon. We now have singing and praying, the Lord's Supper, and then the Bible

study.

At

the same time Jean teaches the children (ages 2-13).

At the end of

the series (sometime before summer 19 70) we plan to resume sermons and continue the study group as a Bible school class. The Revival Fire.? TV program also provided us with a contact which has resulted in a home Bible study with a family on a nearby Marine base. As of this v/riting the family is not attending church but are allowing us to study with them regularly in their home.

An ad

is being

run in a local "shoppers" paper about the Bible study.

It has

received some response but no appointments as yet. We also keep contacting those we know about in the hope that we can reach a few.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTS

Last year and the year before last we tried to be involved in numerous commun ity activities such as scouts,PTA, Help Line, and others. Because of the press of time, the time spent trying to earn a living, and time spent on secretarial and preparation duties, we have dropped all non-church related activities. Ed plans to resume his Help Line work eventually but for the. present it too must go wanting. The only thing we are currently involved in outside the church is
Civil Air P.?.trol
PRINTING MINISTRY

and

this

is on an irregular basis.

Ed serves as unofficial

Fnr- ,awhilg we had- a., small scale Cvery_small) printing-ministry.. lls had_iin_ offset press on which we did our own printing and where possible filled the needs of sister congregations here. The press was old and worn but it servecl us well for a long while. However anything wears out eventually and parts now needed to make the press capable of turning out acceptable work would cost more than another press. As for now we are no longer printing. Whether or not we resume this activity will depend upon the availablility of a suitable press availability of the time required to operate it,and the need for it as compared
to other needs in our overall program.
THE OUTER ISLANDS

Beginning in

January 19 70

Ed & Jean are scheduled to begin weekly flights

in

the mission plane to the island of Moloko.i. There is a Christian school teacher there who flew back and forth to church on Oahu for awhile by commercial air liner. This gets too expensive however and she had to stop. We can fly there in the mission plane for a fraction of the cost and hold services and Bible

study

with

her and (we hope) with others on Molokai.

This probably

will not

the Kailua work but hopefully will result in a

nucleus being formed.

PLEASE PRAY FOR US IN THIS AND ALL PROJECTS FOR CHRIST.

responded in such a fine way to the needs of the Kelseys. Certainly with out your prayers and financial assistance, the Kelseys would not be serving
Christ in the Pacific Islands. As a congregation, we ask your continued

prayers and assistance. All things are possible through our Godpray th?.t needs of the Kelseys will be met. "And let us not be weary in vjell doing: for in due season shall re^^^p, if we faint not." (Galatians 6:9)

NOTES ON THE 1969 FINANCIAL REPORT (ON BACK)

The annual financial zepoit this yeax includes two columns:

(1) Totals fot 1969; (2) Monthly averages foi 1969.
An (**) indicates items that MUST b^ increased in 1970.

Housing costs will be higher iii 1970 but hopefully not above the last half of 1969 (about 300 per month). This
is ridiculous but inescapable iti this Hawaiian economy.
Insurance costs are rising.;

In 1969 we only drew $493 from the mission for Salary altogether for the whole year and put nearly that much back into it to subsidize certain expenses. Almost all of our personal income came ficom Jean and I both working at part time jobs.' If Jean and I are to be able to devote
our full time to the mission, we are going to have to receive between 400 and 500 per month for salary. If not, it has to be made up by secular work. Many are

giidhg regularly to the work and others when they can.

Jo Ann Dedmon, out faithful fotwatdiug agent, is having

to give up the job of keeping our books fbi us.

The

pressures of the job plus other duties has become too much for her health. So we will keep the books from now on. She will continue to serve as our forwarding
agent however. She will wrtie most of the receipts, take care or our slides and displays, and perform other
duties for PFC. Sunds for the mission should still

be sent to her. She will then receipt them and make the bank deposit for the mission. Those who have, in the past, preferred to send directly to us on the field, may continue to do so if you wish. You wiU receive your receipt faster, however, if you send to Jo Ann. The only thing that has changed is who keeps the record books.

BIBLE SCHOOL NEWS

As mentioned before, we have been and still aie, pushing

to get a Sunday school started. Our successes have

been something less than great, to say the least. Dis tribution of handbills, newspaper ads, and personal
contact still are our promary means of promotion. VBS

usually goes over well here so we are in hopes that

are willing to sit down and talk with us. In a community

some results will be realized from our planned VBS ^ Our greatest problem is finding people who

PRAYER NEEDED

These are difficult times.

We have been in Kailua for

almost a year and have little or nothing to show for it

in terms of people won to Christ. We have not quit yet but have been sorely tempted. This is a time of serious re-evaluation and continuous soul-searchiiig. Items to be considered are our own effectiveness; just what is God's will; the advisability of staying on; and other

alternatives.

Ilease pray that we will see God's will

as we try to plan for the months ahead.

SUMMER PLANS

School is out now and summer has begun. En the works now are plans for VES, camp, etc. Jean is going to be
Dean of Jr. Girls camp and Fd is to be dean of Intermed

iate camp this year. He will also work in Jr. Boys camp.
In addition to these things, both Ed & Jean must work at secular work to provide an adequate income for the
family. Jean will drive charters for the school bus com

pany and Ed will work part-time at home-repair and car pentry. It is hoped that in this way an adequate income
can be provided and that sufficient time can still be

be had to pursue our most important job, that of establish

ing Christ's church in Kailua.

We want to urge you to continue your support to the work however. Just because we are working part-time at sec
ular work does not mean that all is o.k. in the financial

department. In fact things are very hard. Mission income just about covers mission expenses so we must work
outside to provide family needs.

Pictured

above is Ed*s amateui tadio (HAM) station.

It is not a part of our work but merely a hobby.

Unfor

tunately Ed doesn't get to spend thr tir.e at his hobby

that he would like. But when he does, he would like to make contact with people ftom our sister churches on the Mainland. If you have a ham friend, have him

write us to arrange a schedule so you can talk to us

here on the mission field.

SUMMER HELPERS

As mentioned before, we are not going to have a big crew of summer college helpers this year. Only one college girl is working with us this year. We had thought that
a lady school teacher ftom our own state of Hawaii would

be working with us but it appears that she is going to

busy teaching summer school and will not be available.
