IV. Verification of Software Used
ETABS by CSI, Berkley and ROBOT Structural Analysis by Autodesk were used by us to perform the
following tasks:
Structural Analysis
RCC Design
These software helped us to perform easy and efficient design and rechecks. However manual
calculations were done whenever necessary.
ETABS by CSI, Berkley: Everything you need is integrated into one versatile analysis and design
package with one Windows-based graphical user interface. No external modules are required. The
effects on one part of the structure from changes in another part are instantaneous and automatic.
The integrated components include:
_ Drafting for model generation
_ Seismic and wind load generation
_ Gravity load distribution for the distribution of vertical loads to columns and beams
_ Finite element-based linear static and dynamic analysis
_ Finite element-based nonlinear static and dynamic analysis
_ Output display and report generation
_ Steel frame design (column, beam and brace)
_ Concrete frame design (column and beam)
_ Composite beam design
_ Composite column design
_ Steel joist design
_ Shear wall design
_ Steel connection design including column base plates
_ Detail schematic drawing generation

ROBOT Structural Analysis by Autodesk: Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis (Robot) is a single
integrated program used for modelling, analysing and designing various types of structures. The
program allows users to create structures, to carry out structural analysis, to verify obtained results,
to perform code check calculations of structural members and to prepare documentation for a
calculated and designed structure. Robot key features of the Commercial version are shown below:
_ Linear, nonlinear and dynamic (modal, spectral, seismic, time history, push over, P-Delta, buckling
deformation, plasticity) structure analysis
_ Working in a multilingual environment (15 languages independently set to user interface,
designing and calculation notes)
_ Working in a multinational environment - designing according to over 50 design codes
_ Frames, plates and shells, plus a powerful GUI modeller and mesher allows the user to define
virtually any shape or configuration of structure you analyse the true structure geometry
_ Quality bi-directional integration with Revit Structure, plus integration through IFC, CIS2 etc.
_ An open API to allow the user to interface their own applications for pre and/or post processing
Verification of the above software for design of RCC Beam and Column has been done using
examples from SP16.
Verification of a Simple Frame Analysis has also been done.

V. Conclusion
Swayin & Associates has provided us an opportunity to work as interns in its organisations. For the
entire duration, we were involved in structural designing of various types of projects. With the
provided exposure and guidance we were able to develop the following skills:
Structural Analysis
Design of RCC Structures
Structural Modelling
Finite Element Meshing Analysis
Structural Detailing
Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings
We were required to design/check the structural stability and reinforcement detailing of the projects
provided. For that we used structural design software (ETABS, Revit Structural, ROBOT Structural) and
manual calculations whenever necessary.
The type of work we did covers a major part of Civil Engineering and we hope that it will help us lot
in the course of our future experience in this field. Particularly in the civil design and construction
industry, we were able to gain a considerable exposure.
The internship activities that we carried out correlated with our classroom knowledge, mainly the
RCC design and Structural Analysis courses.
