History

UMT was founded in 1990 as the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).
ILM was established by leading educationists, professionals, and industrialists with
an aim to enhance the organizational and individual effectiveness. Guided by the
noble mission of helping others in actualizing their limitless human potential to its
finest shape, ILM sought to respond to the challenges of information-based
economy, globalization, and ever increasing complexity.

UMT – now an independent, not-for-profit, private institution of higher learning –

received her degree-granting charter first as the Institute of Management and
Technology (IMT) in 2002 through an Act of the Assembly of the Punjab. Later, on
16 June 2004, IMT became University of Management and Technology through
the passing of a similar Act by the Punjab Assembly.

In September 2007, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan, upgraded

the category of UMT from ‘Category X’/ previous ‘Category B’ to ‘Category W’/
previous ‘Category A’. UMT now ranks among the few select universities in the
country in this category.
Mission Statement

We aspire to become a learning institution and evolve as the leading community

for the purpose of integrated development of the society by actualizing strategic
partnership with stakeholders, harnessing leadership, generating useful
knowledge, fostering enduring values, and projecting sustainable technologies
and practices.

Institute of Leadership and Management Trust

Institute of Leadership and Management Trust (ILM Trust) is the sponsoring body
of University. The Chairperson of the ILM Board of Trustees is also the
Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the University. Currently, four members
of the ILM Board of Trustees are also members of the University’s Board of
Governors.
Disciplinary Committee

The Rector has constituted a Disciplinary Committee to supervise and maintain

highest standards of academic discipline. The Disciplinary Committee enforces
rules and regulations and considers the cases referred to it by the Rector, the
Dean, Head A&E, Associate Deans and the Program Coordinators/Advisor.

Disciplinary Actions

In case of breach of discipline by any participant, the Disciplinary Committee is

authorized to take appropriate decision, whenever and whatever applicable, in
the best interest of the institutional image, personal integrity, academic
discipline, and the quality of education
UMT has become an institutional member of Asia Pacific Quality Network
(APQN).. Institutional Members are institutions of higher education in the region
that are in good standing with the relevant quality assurance agency if one exists.

The Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) has been developed with the purpose of
serving the needs of quality assurance agencies in higher education in a region that
contains over half the world’s population.

This is a fast-growing region, with an increasing appetite for education, and with
increasing mobility of students and providers to meet that need. In turn, this makes
it a region of growing and developing quality assurance agencies that needs to be
able to deal with public and private providers, and with education and students that
cross national borders. The APQN is already helping to build alliances between
agencies, and assisting countries/territories that do not have a quality assurance
agency of their own.

CAMPUS PROJECT- PROFILE

It was essential for UMT to undertake construction of a purpose-built campus

housing all academic departments in a campus worthy of its status as a premier
institution for higher education. The construction of a purpose-built campus is a
response to this need. The first phase of the 20 acres purpose built campus in Johar
town, Lahore has been completed and all academic as well as administrative
departments and faculties have been shifted to the new campus.

The campus master plan incorporates all the essential features of a modern
University meeting international standards and offers excellent facilities for
teaching and learning. It comprises state-of the-art laboratories, academic blocks,
library, auditorium, student teacher centre, engineering laboratories,
library/research and development block, gymnasium, faculty apartments and
separate hostel accommodation for male and female students.
Phase-I was primarily based on an Academic Block with utilities and supplies,
which has been complete at a cost of Rupees 300 Million. Land was acquired at a
cost of Rupees 100 Million. Phase-II would cost Rupees 583 Million and Phase-III
Rupees 830 Million. We are now commencing Phase-II and hope to be in a
position to start the final phase by June 2009.

The range of programs being offered by the University has been widened to
include areas of specialization that would open up greater opportunities for our
graduates in the job markets at home and abroad. Some of the new degree
programs introduced are in the areas of human resource management, media and
communications, applied linguistics, industrial management, project management
and e-commerce. All academic and non-academic activities engineer positive
social change and are extremely beneficial to society in terms of human resource
development. At UMT there has been a marked growth in demand for services,
which directly support the learning and research needs of students.

The technologically sophisticated building of library which is intended to be

constructed at the commencement of Phase-II of the campus Master Plan will carry
library services forwarded for fifty years down the road. The building will have
wired and wireless access rooms to the campus network and web; seminars and
study rooms equipped with electronic information access. To achieve the goal of
attracting students and other learners, the building will be inclusive of a number of
study rooms, comfortable seating areas, Islamic research center, gender learning
center and language lab. New arrivals and exhibition area, periodical section,
clipping room, digital library, variety of study spaces, quiet study carrels and much
more would be there to support our valued members. A coffee shop, heated and
cool environment, researchers' rooms, would be key features of building. In
addition to library’s electronic conference room a computer lab will be developed.
Interested people and organizations would be invited to join hands with UMT in
the completion of this worthwhile project, which will be of lasting value to the
country and people of Pakistan, as well as visiting scholars, and to the scholarship
in the world at large through virtual environment.

Aims and objectives of Umt

1. Stress is laid on the need for improving the quality of education at every stage so that a
proper foundation can be laid for advanced study in science, engineering,
agriculture, and those other areas which are most closely allied to the national
economic development and reconstruction of the nation as a whole.

2. To begin from the top without reforming the lower stages is against the law of
nature; it is against the law of evolutionary progress. Before any restrictions are
imposed on the higher education, the earlier stages should be improved so as to
produce better students for the higher stage.

3. A critical point to be considered by educational planner is the adaptation of a

multidimensional, flexible, and dynamic education system, which serves people
according to their ability and aptitude and is responsive to their economic, social
political and cultural needs.

4. The new system of higher education should be flexible enough to offer a variety of
courses, formal and non formal, full time and part time, correspondence and media
based to fit every individual as well as the economic needs of the country

5. Economic conditions of the people cannot be ignored in all matters in which the
question of equal opportunities to all is involved. In an atmosphere of economic
depression as it is today in Pakistan how could one expect from our youth to be able
to develop their potential qualities in desired way.
6. The test of qualities must be made reliable upon examination and more effective;
the teaching method must be made more rational and natural; and last of all, the
teachers must be kept fully satisfied. It is well known, that a foreign medium of
instruction and examination is seriously hampering the progress of education.
Pakistan will have to determine its policy with regards to this question also.

7. There is great question of availability of qualified university teachers, suitably

equipped libraries, and fully developed plants and laboratories. It is a matter of
common knowledge that our resources in all these areas are very merger. Any
unnecessary addition to the number of the universities at present would therefore
mean nothing, but more ill-fed and ill-equipped institutions with no specially or
individuality of purpose.

Q.What type of academic calendar does UMT follow?

A. There are two main semesters: Fall and Spring. A reduced variety of courses is also offered
during
the summer. The main semesters are of 17-week duration and the summer session of 9 weeks.

Q.Why UMT follows a semester-based academic calendar?

A.Semester, trimester or quarter-based academic calendars are generally followed by universities
all over the world. We have adopted a semester-based approach as we believe that it is the best
for our students.
HEC and Government of the Punjab recommend the same and many of the top universities of the
world
follow this approach as well.

Q.Do UMT graduates gain admission in public and private universities, here and abroad, for
higher studies?
A. Our degree is recognized by the HEC and our graduates are currently enrolled in dozens of
private (e.g.
LUMS) and public-sector (e.g. PU) universities in Pakistan , Malaysia , South Korea , UK ,
USA , and
many other countries.

Q.What is meant by “Offer of Admission on a Provisional-Basis”?

A. A number of students who apply for admission do so before receiving the final results of a
qualification that
is the entrance requirement. Such students are offered admission on the basis of their previous
academic
record, admission test, and/or interview. Such offers are, however, provisional, subject to
meeting the
minimum admission requirements. Students admitted on a provisional-basis are required to
submit their
final results as soon as they are announced, failing which their offers of admission stand
withdrawn.

Q.What happens to the registration status of a result-awaiting student who fails and is required to
appear
in the supplementary examination?
A.Result-awaiting students are admitted on a provisional-basis only. In case, they fail to achieve
the required marks when their results are declared, their registration is frozen immediately. They
are not allowed to
continue in that semester, but the fees that they have paid for that semester can be transferred to
the next one in case they obtain the required marks in the supplementary examination.

Q.Does UMT have affiliated campuses anywhere in Pakistan or abroad?

A.No.

Q.Can ICS students gain admission in the BS Computer Science, BS Computer Engineering, BS
Telecommunication Engineering?
A. Yes, those having studied a combination of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Studies or
Computer
Science are eligible for admission to the above mentioned programs. They will, however, be
required to
take an additional 4 credit-hour course.

Q.Can holders of DAE obtain admission in the BS Engineering programs?

A.A candidate who has passed Diploma of Associate Engineer (DAE) examination, securing at
least 60% aggregate marks, shall be eligible for admission against seats in the same discipline of
engineering in
which he or she has passed the Diploma examination.

Q.What is the accreditation status of the BS in Engineering programs being offered at UMT?
A.Our semester-based BS Engineering program is not accredited as it is in its early stages. The
same is also
the case for many other institutions (e.g. FAST-NU) as PEC does not accredit programs at such
an early
stage. We are, however, fully committed to shaping this program into a world-class one. Getting
it
accredited by the PEC as soon as possible is one of our top priorities. We are currently in the
process of applying for an early inspection of our faculty resources, curricula and facilities. Our
growing faculty
currently includes over 25 individuals with engineering degrees. Our curricula conform to the
PEC/HEC guidelines. Our science and engineering laboratory facilities are probably the best
among the private universities.

Q.What is the status of UMT's science and engineering labs?

A. We currently offer lab-based courses in Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, Digital Logic,
Microprocessors, Computer Networks, Software Usability, Textile Wet Processing, Knitting and
Weaving. More laboratories (e.g. electric machines lab) have been planned and will go into
operation in the near future. Most courses require the students to do computer-based work.
UMT's computer network consists of more than 1200
nodes with a band-width of 8 MB. Wireless connectivity is also available. UMT has fully
equipped
telecom labs for the use of its students.

Q.What activities does UMT organize to ensure that her graduates find appropriate employment?
A. At UMT, students are not only trained to exhibit their full potential, they are also provided
with an array
of services for facilitating their career planning and job placement. These services range from
career
seminars to mock interviews to internships to job fairs. These services remain available to the
students
even after they have graduated. UMT offers skill-development workshops and knowledge
enhancing
seminars to the alumni as well.

Q.When did UMT receive her degree-granting charter?

A. UMT received her charter first as the Institute of Management and Technology in 2002
through an Act
of the Assembly of the Punjab . Later, on 16 June 2004 , it became University of Management
and
Technology through the passing of a similar Act.

Q.Where does UMT stand in comparison with other local and national universities?
A.Please compare the faculty, campus, library, computer facilities, laboratories, and curricula to
make
your own judgment about us.

Q.Why all UMT courses carry 3 credit-hours while some of the other universities have courses
of 4-5
credit-hours and term duration of less than 17 weeks?
A. One-credit hour stands for 15 contact-hours for a lecture course or 45 contact-hours for a
laboratory course.
The total duration of a semester is 17 weeks and that of a summer session is 9. Many top
universities
follow schemes similar to this one. Government of the Punjab and HEC have adopted similar
definitions
for a semester credit-hour as well. As far as the credit-hours for individual courses are concerned,
they vary even within UMT. Although most of them carry 3 credit-hours, those with 1, 2 and 6
also exist. Same is
true for many other universities.

Q.How much financial assistance is available to those who are admitted?

A. Financial Assistance is offered on the basis of merit as well as need. There is no application
process
for merit-based awards, as all students that are offered admission are considered for these awards
automatically. To be considered for a need-based award, please fill the Application for Financial
Assistance along with your Application for Admission.

Q.Is there any financial advantage in paying the dues in one lump sum?
A. A pre-payment discount of 15% is given on total tuition-fee admissible for 4 years, 10%
discount on
tuition-fee admissible for 3 years, and 5% discount on tuition-fee admissible for 2 years.

Q.Why is the duration of the MS program two years?

A.The MS programs have been designed according to the guidelines provided by the HEC. Out of
those two years, a full-time student generally spends most of his/her first year taking courses, and
a major part of the second on MS thesis.

Q.What is the accreditation status of the MS/PhD in Engineering programs being offered at
UMT?
A.PEC currently does not accredit MS/PhD Engineering programs. Therefore, none of the
MS/PhD programs offered by Pakistani institutions (including those by UET, NUST, etc.) have
been accredited by PEC.

Q.Are BTech (Honors) graduates eligible for admission to the MS/PhD program?
A. Candidates with BTech (Honors) may apply for admission. They are, however, required to
submit a
certificate from HEC stating the suitability of their degree for admission to the MS/PhD program.

Q.Does UMT accept transfer-students from other universities?

A.Yes. Further details are available here.
Q.Do international universities accept transfer of credit from UMT?
A. Overseas universities generally accept credits from all Pakistani universities that are
recognized by
the HEC. The list of all HEC-recognized universities is available here.

Q.Which international universities accept transfer of credit from UMT?

A.When a student from overseas (or other universities in Pakistan) applies for transfer-of-credit
to UMT,
we look at the courses that the candidate has taken and accept for transfer only those that are
similar to
ours and the candidate has received a B or a higher grade in them. Many universities in Pakistan
and
overseas follow a similar policy.
