What the heck is Louisville Craft Beer Week, anyway?

And whats this LouisvilleBeer.com thing all about?
Thanks for asking those hard-hitting questions. Please, let me explain: The third annual Louisville Craft Beer Week is a 9-day, city wide celebration of local and regional craft beer. The primary goal of Louisville Craft Beer Week is to promote our areas thriving craft beer culture, enhancing beer knowledge and appreciation. This pull-out guide, along with our website, LouisvilleBeer. com, will be your guide to all of the events that are part of this celebration. Within the last few years the awareness of micro-brewed and hand crafted beers has increased dramatically. Most restaurants and bars have gotten hip to the craft beer scene and now offer more varieties of beer. I think both the foodie revolution and the Buy Local First movement have increased peoples fondness for local and regional craft beer (read: beer with flavor). I registered and launched the first iteration of LouisvilleBeer.com back in 2008 as I was slowly getting into craft beer. It started as a message board for me and my friends to review and share new beers we had tried. Over time, I had a handful of members, and thats when the spammers took over. I ended up shutting the site down in 2009, and there it sat. I decided to crank it up again in August of 2011 with a little help from my friends. In just under a year, LouisvilleBeer.com has become the online source for the calendar of events, coverage of these events, videos, reviews, news and education on craft beer in Kentuckiana. We gave Roger Baylor (of New Albanian Brewing Company) a new stage for his bi weekly column. LouisvilleBeer.com broke the news that Jeremy Hunt (of Dogfish Head) was coming to work at BBC St. Matthews. We were the first on the scene when Falls Citys brewing equipment arrived. We covered the collaboration brews between Chicagos Local Option, Cumberland Brewery and Against the Grain. Our first look video of Apocalypse Brew Works has had over 1,700 views and offered people a sneak peek at the Mellwood Avenue brewery months before it opened. We have our finger on the pulse, and people are seeking out this information as the craft beer scene continues to grow in Kentucky and Indiana. We like to get behind the scenes to showcase the great beer in our area and the great people behind it. For the second year in a row, LouisvilleBeer.com has had the privilege of promoting and organizing Craft Beer Week. The inaugural LCBW in 2010 was run by a loosely organized brewers guild of sorts. It was handed over to us in 2011 with little time to promote it. We pushed the events online via social media and the website. In the end, it was a success and we were excited to start working on the next year, wanting it to be bigger and better. An overview video of last years LCBW can be found at http://bit.ly/oILAIN. This year, with a ton of help from sales dude Scott Lykins, we started promoting earlier. With the blessing of all of the local breweries, weve taken Louisville Craft Beer Week up a few notches. This is going to be the biggest Craft Beer Week ever. We hope to bring awareness of great beer to a wider audience by publishing this guide in LEO Weekly. Wed like to thank our sponsors, LEO Weekly, West Sixth Brewing Company and Whole Foods Market. With their help, as well as that of our advertisers, we are looking forward to bringing this event to a greater number of people outside of our close-knit community. A huge thank you also goes out to all of the venues hosting events. Of course, Louisville Craft Beer Week would be impossible without our amazing local and regional breweries: Against the Grain, Apocalypse Brew Works, Beer Engine (Danville), Bluegrass Brewing Company (and Brewpubs), Country Boy Brewing (Lexington), Cumberland Brews, Falls City, Kentucky Ale, Lore Brewing (Danville), New Albanian Brewing Company, Schlafly, Upland (Bloomington) and West Sixth Brewing (Lexington). With this number of choices, theres no reason NOT to drink local! Theres a whole lot more to beer than the light-colored lagers we all grew up with. We all hope that this series of events can open the door to tastier beer for the masses. Dont be afraid of trying new beers. We hope to see a lot of new faces at these events. Beer doesnt get more domestic than this. Remember, please drink responsibly this week (and every week). John M. Wurth LouisvilleBeer.com P.S. Text LCBW to 72727 to receive mobile updates and giveaways throughout the week! (Standard messaging rates apply)
