Biotechnology Impacting Cosmetic Science Respected Teachers and Friends.

In the next 3 minutes or so it shall be our endeavor to present before you the impact of biotechnology on Cosmetic science. As you will be aware - Your skin is your largest organ and also the thinnest. Less than 2.5mm separates your body from potential toxins. Worse yet, your skin is highly permeable. Just about anything you put on your skin will end up in your blood stream, and will be distributed throughout your body. Which is why Im so fond of saying dont put anything on your body that you wouldnt eat if you had to...?" Did you know? 99% of our cosmetic products contain one or more ingredients that have never been evaluated for safety. . Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering technology, medicine and other fields requiring bio-products. The latest wave of cosmetics use biotechnology-derived ingredients, genetic profiling for individual skin-care or nutritional regimes, stem-cell-based products and therapies to regenerate ageing tissues, or cell and tissue engineering for cosmetic purposes. Stabilized enzymes help to repair damage after exposure to solar radiation, digest pigments in age spots. Appropriate polymers tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, or prolong moisturisation. Snail cream works wonder on the smallest and largest of skin blemishes. The serum secreted by snail seeps into the skin rejuvenates damaged cells and reawakens damaged areas . In the field of dentistry ,biotechnology plays the lead role .

Acid production by Streptococcus mutans is responsible for most human tooth decay. Dr. Hillmans research and approach has used DNA technology to genetically modify Streptococcus mutans to produce a bacterial strain that can be used to prevent tooth decay by out-competing the naturally occurring ones and replacing them in the oral cavity. But, friends as we know every rose has its thorns bio technology too has its flaws.Until now, the cosmetic product Botoxhad
been considered safe, in large part because it was assumed that the toxin remained confined to the injection site. The Institute of Neuroscience in Pisa recently showed that this assumption might be wrong. This should raise some concerns about the safety of the injections as it revealed the ability of the toxin to travel along nerve cells while remaining active and could be the cause of cancer.

At the end we can conclude that biotechnology has indeed impacted the cosmetic industry to a large extent. Beautyas the saying goesis in the eye of the beholder!!! though this relativistic insight has not stopped humans from spending more than 6,000 years striving to artificially enhance their looks. Today, many women and men devote considerable amounts of time and money to selecting and applying the right combination of cosmetic products, and thus drive a hugeand still growingcosmetics industry. I dont noe where to fit these lines there is no time Cosmetics will take advantage from those technologies that will allow one to achieve observable results upon topical application. The medical and agricultural branches of the biotech industry are the ones primarily impacting the cosmetics and personal-care industry, since these are the scientific fields

traditionally acting as sources for ingredients and actives used in cosmetics.
