1.

(adapted from Fogler,2006, P6-5)A mixture of 50% A and 50% is charged to a constant volume batch reactor where equilibrium is rapidly achieved. The initial total concentration is 3 mol/l. a) Calculate the equilibrium concentration and conversion of A at 330 for: A + B C + D, Ke1 (330K ) = 4, Ke1 (350K ) = 2.36 C + D X + Y , Ke2 (330K ) = 1, Ke2 (350K ) = 1.5 Suppose the temperature is increased to 350K, as a result a third reaction must now be considered A + X Z , Ke3 (350K ) = 5 l/mol Calculate the equilibrium concentration, conversion of A and overall selectivities SC/X , SD/Z and SY /Z .

The following elementary reactions take place in an isothermal liquid phase mixed reactor (CSTR)
A B, k1 = 0.5s1 k2 = 0.1s1 A + D 2R, k3 = 0.2 l.mol1 s1

(b)

An equimolar mixture of A and D (CA0 = CD0 = 1.0 mol/l , CB 0 = CR0 = 0.0 mol/l ) is fed to the reactor which has a volume of 4 litres. The conversion of A is 0.9 (XA = 0.9). Determine the composition of all the products and the volume owrate to the reactor. Use an initial guess for v 0 = 50 l/s. What is the maximum conversion of A that can be achieved using a (i) (ii) CSTR (2) PFR (2)

Provide a clear explanation for your answers 4. When aqueous A and aqueous B (CA0 = CB0 ) are brought into contact, they react in two possible ways; A + B R + T , rR = 50CA A + B S + U , rS = 100CB to give a mixture whose total concentration of active components (A, B, R, T, S and U) is a Ctotal = CA0 + CB 0 = 60 mol.m=3 . Find the size of the reactor needed and the R/S ratio produced for 90% conversion of an equimolar feed of FA0 = FB 0 = 300 mol/hr ; (a) (b) (c) 5.

give 67% selectivity to the desired product B at 75% conversion of A in a CSTR with a reaction time of 1 min and with CA0 = 2 mol/l . The reaction temperature is 400 K. (a) (b) (c) (d) What are the selectivity and conversion for this reaction when the reactants are fed to a PFR with a residence time of 1 min. What are the conversion and selectivity in the CSTR when CA0 = 1 mol/l . What residence time and conversion will give 99% selectivity to B in a CSTR whenCA0 = 2. The activation energy for k1 is 21 kJ/mol and for k2 it is 42 kJ/mol . At what temperature will the selectivity to B be 95% when the residence time is 1 min, CA0 = 2 mol/l and the conversion of A is 75% when operating in a CSTR.
