ATHLETICS MALTA NEWSLETTER

Issue No: 31
Date of issue: 15th May, 2009

Dear Friends in Athletics,

I would like to start this letter to you with the news that H. E. The President of Malta, Dr. George Ablea,
will be meeting the Council of the MAAA when he visits the offices of the Association on Wednesday, the
20th May, 2009. Indeed a great honour and another red letter day for the Association. I hope to be able to
tell you more about this important visit by the President in the next issue of this Newsletter.

On the second page of this Newsletter you will find the program of events of the National Track and Field
Championships which will be held during the weekend, that is on Saturday and Sunday the 16th and 17th
May. These Championships are perhaps one of the most important events of the year for our elite
athletes, or to be more direct, for those athletes who still need to achieve the MQS for them to qualify for
the GSSE. I will not be exaggerating when I say that our athletes preparation for this year’s games has been
one of the most disastrous for the last decade.

One would expect to have one or two athletes who would hurt themselves while trying hard to achieve the
necessary MQS/s as set by the (previous ) Director of Sports – MOC. But one must admit that this year’s
list of injured athletes was exceptionally long. We have now finished with a very depleated team of
athletes. We are, and have always been in favour of having MQS/s. But we also expect that these standards
would be reasonable and that these could be achieved without having to pay such a heavy price of so many
injured athletes. With only fifteen days to go before our depature for Cyprus, we are still uncertain on the
number of athletes who would be making it to Cyprus.

As one can see from page 4 of this Newsletter the IAAF give a lot of importance to the Kids Athletics
program. We are proud of the importance that the IAAF gave to the Kids Athletics program that we are
carrying out here in Malta, however I would like to make it clear that while the photos were indeed copied
from an earlier issue of this same Newsletter, I cannot and will not take credit for the contents of the article
as published in the IAAF Newsletter.

Yours in sport,

Anthony Chircop
