IIM CALCUTA GD/PI EXPERIENCE QUESTIONNAIRE

WORK EXPERIENCE: Duration of Total work experience: 12 months Company last worked for: Kanbay Software (India) Private Limited. Position: Associate Consultant Worked in enhancement/production support projects. GROUP DISCUSSION: Topic of the GD: There are no facts, only interpretations. No. of participants in the GD: 8-10 Time Limit and any other instructions: 12-15 minutes. Whether asked to summarize the GD: Yes Whether a written summary of the GD was asked: No (was asked in L though) THE GD EXPERIENCE: (please provide at least 5 lines of description) Dont remember many details; I do remember mentioning the US attack on Iraq and that the same incident was being interpreted in different ways by different parties. The group generally agreed that the statement should be taken only in a particular context for, it isnt always applicable, scientific facts for example are not open to interpretation.

How would you rate the Chaos level in the GD (on a scale of 1-10, 1 being most peaceful 10 being most chaotic): 3 or 4 out of 10. Any observations on mistakes you committed in the GD: I spoke only twice during the GD (excluding the summary in the end) and on both occasions I spoke for more than 40 seconds. Generally speaking, this a better strategy would be to speak more number of times with shorter durations. Any observations of what you could have done better in the GD: refer to above. Any tips for GD preparation: For abstract topics, try and bring the discussion to a more real world level one must, however, ensure that the real world example is relevant and fairly well known. Keep your ears open sometimes, one simply runs out of ideas about a topic, ideas from others often give us useful hints. Keep up with current affairs newspapers, magazines et al. Make sure you go through enough practice GDs before the actual one. (I explained how things worked in my company and where I fit in. We discussed a little about insurance my domain, client at the workplace) Why do you want to be a manager? (Put my skills to better use; Seen managers work in my office and would like to contribute in that way to organizations; seek a career with better growth and challenges) Youve done engineering and also worked in the field for a year, dont you think all these years will go waste if you go for an MBA? (I havent spent all these years learning only about computers; I have learnt team work, etc all of which I can use even in managerial positions; something on these lines) How important is creativity for a manger? (I beat around the bush a bit, we had a fairly long discussion, and ultimately I said that it is important but should be used sparingly) Why is there a gap in your career (between 12th and Degree)? (I took a break to prepare for IIT). Given a choice between DM and DCM what would you take? (I said DM because Id like to keep my options open) So youve studied satellite communications. What is a geostationary satellite? What is the distance from the surface of the earth? How many geo stationary satellites are required to cover the earth completely? Similar questions what is the difference between microwave and radio communication? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? (Answered all the Qs except the micro/radio question, to which I said I dont know).
