Background: The Graduate School recognizes research activities as an essential part of a productive academic endeavor that encompasses instruction and extension in order to attain academic excellence and to maintain the university status of the institution. With this conviction, the University is continuously exerting efforts to enhance the quality of instruction by providing trainings to the faculty and strengthening the community involvement through its various extension programs. Research is also given an equal importance by providing avenues/opportunities and incentives to all the employees especially to the faculty to conduct research but despite of such efforts, only few employees conduct research maybe because of lack of experience and the capability to conduct such. The need to develop research skills in the faculty can be supported through training, mentorship and supervision. Research skill development increases research activity, builds confidence and enhances positive attitudes towards the conduct of research. Studies show that lack of training and research skills are barriers to doing research (Cooke, Owen & Wilson, 2002; Raghunath & Innes, 2004). Thus, to respond to the need of building the research capabilities of the faculty members, the Graduate School finds it imperative to plan research capability building activities for interested and promising faculty researchers. The Graduate school proposes to conduct a series of seminar-writeshop on Research Capability Building on April 26, May 17, and June 5, 2013. The first activity will focus on Research Process while the second activity will focus on Research Proposal writeshop and Preparation of Research Output. The final activity will be the presentation of the shortlisted proposal as part of the Pagtais 2013. In attendance will be faculty researchers of all colleges and department specifically, those with on-going research and proposals in order to improve, repackage and polish these for funding and implementation.

The objectives of the said seminar-workshop will be to give insights to the participants on how to do research, specifically on the current research thrusts and priorities of the University. It aims to train them how to repackage research proposals and on-going studies or projects to meet quality standards of refereed journals and funding agencies as well as present new research proposals and on-going research in line with the thrusts and priorities of the government outlined in its research agenda as well those of the University, and develop research skills and competencies. Moreover, Research Capability Building suggests that it should contain elements of continuity and sustainability of the newly acquired skills to undertake research by applying such skills to practice. In order to realize this objective, it is hoped that the University provides enabling opportunities for continued application of the skills to research practice such as adequate fund support and infrastructures which would include structures and processes that are set up to enable the smooth and effective running of research projects.
