personal statement
I believe myself to be a very creative and free thinking person, always open to experimenting with new ideas and techniques in order to improve my skills and work ethic. I previously worked at Hydra Creative Limited, based in Sheffield, where I worked as a Junior Multimedia Designer from March 2012 to May 2013. During this time I feel I have matured greatly as a designer, both in the way I think and execute the projects I am working on, and in terms of the way I work, regarding deadlines and having a good eye for detail. Working at Hydra Creative also provided me with the necessary skills to be able to pitch ideas, present work and liaise with clients, both in person and electronically and work on a variety of design projects for clients of all sizes. These projects have included website layout designs, web application design and printed literature. I am capable of working to specific requirements and brand guidelines, as well as on projects that allow free reign which enable me to work effectively on my own initiative. I am experienced in the use of both Mac and PC, as well as most areas of the Adobe Creative Suite. I believe I am able to work both individually, projecting, creating and focusing on my own ideas and putting them into practice quickly and efficiently. I am also able to work in a team as well, where I can incorporate the ideas of others into my work successfully, and work on a project as part of a group. In between studying and looking for work in the design industry, I have completed various freelance projects for several clients, including Martial Arts Club, Te-Sheng Do, designing their monthly newsletters to be distributed to members of the club in the Sheffield area. I have also worked on projects for Charity events such as The Star Wars Fan Fun Day, held annually in Burnley, Lancashire, for which I have produced designs for tickets, posters, and the logo for the event itself for the past two years.

Following these projects through word of mouth recommendations, I have produced designs for embroidered patches for other websites of a similar nature, such as the websites www.yodasholonet.com and www.threpio.co.uk, which have been sold in five countries and have been used successfully to promote each site. I am a happy, easy going and approachable individual, and feel this is greatly beneficial given the career I wish to pursue, as it enables me to get on well with my colleagues, as well as allow me to meet with and present to clients. I am also looking to continuously improve my skills as a designer and pursue development through the use of new techniques, software and technology. As an ever evolving industry, I am aware this willingness to learn is essential, and therefore aim to perform all my work to the highest of standards, ensuring I am aware of, and up to date with the latest design trends and techniques, as well as using these as a basis to put my own ideas and styles into practice. Design isnt just a job to me, it is a hobby, a past time and a passion as well.

In January 2009, I returned to the School of Nursing to perform temporary Clerical work. This served as a temporary job, filling in for a member of staff away on leave, and once again involved the filing and organising of University documents, ready to send to students and members of staff.

sheffield university print & design solutions: Work placement

Duration: May 2009
In May 2009, during my time studying for my BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design at the Sheffield College, I completed a five day work placement in the Print and Design department at the Sheffield University. I found this an incredibly useful and eye opening experience into the design industry, as I was introduced to the team of designers and printers, learning their roles within the department, as well as gaining an insight into the design and print processes of some of the Universities promotional material which helped me to understand the use and importance of brand guidelines. I was also set tasks in order to provide me with an albeit brief, but useful level of understanding and experience of working in a design studio. These tasks included developing concepts for logos to be used by eateries in the Student Union buildings belonging to the University.

hydra creative limited: junior multimedia designer

Duration: March 2012 - May 2013
In March 2012, I embarked on a work placement at Hydra Creative Limited. This initially served as a temporary work placement as a Graphic Designer, in order to gain valuable experience working in a design studio, and would eventually lead to my full time employment as a Junior Graphic Designer later in the year. During my time with Hydra Creative, I worked on projects for clients of all sizes, ranging from Web and App Design, Logo Design and Branding and Printed Literature. I would also be involved in meetings with clients, discussing their ideas for projects, as well as presenting finalised designs to them at the end of the project and liaising with clients electronically. In August, my position changed to that of a Junior Multimedia Designer, as I was given tutoring by members of the team in web development, learning the very basics of HTML and CSS, working with the developers to build websites for clients, as well as working with Content Management Systems, entering and adjusting data and proof reading content. The position not only served as my first venture into the design industry, but also provided me with the necessary skills to mature as a designer and progress further.
