PIP Piping Material Specification Line Classes Master Consolidated Notes


01 If a pipe schedule is shown under "SCH/RAT," it shall be adequate for the full flange rating. If "CALC" is shown, the pressure limit may be lower than full flange rating. 02 All butt-welded component thicknesses shall match the pipe thickness. 03 Threaded joints are permitted only at the outlet of vent and drain valves, hydrostatic connections, outlet instrument take-off valves, and to match equipment. 04 Requirements for low-temperature and cryogenic service shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3, Paragraph 323.2.2 and Table 323.2.2. 05 Integrally reinforced branch connections outside the sizes shown in the branch connection table are permitted. If applicable, weld thickness of integrally reinforced branch connections shall be checked to determine if PWHT is required. 06 These valves shall be used only for vent, drain, and instrument connections. 07 These valves have no flanges but are installed between line flanges with extra-length bolts. 08 Full-port valves shall be used if indicated on the P&ID. 09 Pressure and temperature rating can be limited by certain components permitted by this Practice. Manufacturer's recommended pressure-temperature restrictions shall be consulted. 10 Compression fitting components from different manufacturers shall not be used interchangeably. 11 Flat-face flanges shall be provided adjacent to flat-face equipment nozzles. 12 These flanges shall be used only to match Class 300 flange connections at control valves and special equipment. 13 Weld-neck flanges shall be used against butt-weld fittings. Otherwise, slip-on flanges shall be used. 14 Full-face gaskets shall be used at flat-faced flanges. 15 These valves shall be used if mating to flanged nozzles. 16 Tubing wall thickness shown may not be suitable for GAS service. For GAS service, manufacturer shall be consulted for wall thickness recommendation. 17 Threaded-outlet branch-weld fittings shall be used only for hydrostatic test connections. 18 Because of adiabatic expansion, caution shall be used if fast-closing valves are installed in oxygen systems. 19 Sch 160 pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections for sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 1-1/2. 20 Sch XXS pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections for sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 2. 21 Sch 40S pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections for sizes NPS 1 through NPS 2. 22 Stub ends with lap-joint back-up flanges may be used for temperatures up to 500F (260C). For higher temperatures, weld-neck flanges shall be used. 23 Sch 80S pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections for sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 2. 24 This material specification is not a listed specification in ASME B31.3. See ASME B31.3, Paragraph 323.1.2 for use of unlisted material. 25 Weld-neck flanges shall be used if mating against resilient-seated butterfly valves. 26 To be used only if indicated on the P&ID. 27 Pipe and pipe components thicker than 1/2-inch may require impact-tested materials if the minimum design metal temperature is below 100F (38C). See ASME B31.3, Paragraph 323.2.2. 28 Push-on (PO) joints shall be used, unless otherwise specified. PO joints are available in various designs and are not interchangeable between different manufacturers. 29 Thickness shall be in accordance with AWWA C151/ANSI A21.51, Table 51.1. Minimum depth shall be 3 feet (915 mm), or 1 foot (305 mm) below the frost line, whichever is greater. 30 All wetted surfaces shall be fully lined. Fittings shall be in accordance with the dimensional requirements of ASME B16.42 or ASME B16.5. 31 Plastic lining in pipe shall be in accordance with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PTFE plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe, fittings, and flanges. Pipe shall have Class 150 flanged ends. Pipe shall be equipped with means to vent pressure from between the plastic liner and steel pipe. 32 Flanged ends shall be configured as one of the following: a) molded raised face with threaded ductile iron flanges, b) lap joint flanges with lap joint ends, c) two-piece lap joint flanges with lap joint ends that meet Class 150 dimensions. Inner flange corners shall be chamfered a minimum of 1/4-inch or in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 33 Fittings shall be in accordance with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PTFE plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. All wetted surfaces shall be fully lined. Fittings shall be in accordance with dimensional requirements of ASME B16.42 or ASME B16.5. 34 Branch on lateral shall be full-sized.

35 For reducing flange (reducing filler flange), bolts for reduced connection shall thread into blind holes in the face of the flange. 36 Instrument tee shall slip between two flanges on the main run. Branch connection shall have a lap-joint flanged end with Class 150 flange for the branch size. 37 Both ends of the reducing ell shall have Class 150 flanges. 38 Gaskets are not required for connections between plastic-lined components. 3/16-inch PTFE envelope gaskets shall be used for mating plastic-lined components to nonlined components. Manufacturer's specifications shall be checked for specific applications. 39 Hex-head bolts or cap screws, nuts, and washers can be used if required. 40 Manufacturer shall be consulted for temperature, pressure, and vacuum rating limits for a specific service. 41 Bolts shall be torqued to manufacturer's specifications. Bolts shall be retorqued to manufacturer's specifications. 42 Welding or heating of metal surfaces of plastic-lined pipe shall not be permitted. 43 Bending of plastic-lined pipe shall be done only if permitted by the manufacturer and in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. 44 Deleted. Replaced with Note 4. 45 Ball valves and gate valves have a cavity relief; therefore, these valves shall be installed with the cavity vent (as indicated on the valve) on the high-pressure side. The high-pressure side shall be indicated on the P&ID. 46 The use of spacers shall be limited. Spacers shall be permitted for field fitting or if other means of making connections are not possible. 47 Plastic lining in pipe shall be in accordance with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PP plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. Pipe shall have Class 150 flanged ends. Pipe shall be equipped with means to vent pressure from between plastic liner and steel pipe. The vent shall not be obstructed. 48 Fittings shall be in accordance with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PP plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. All wetted surfaces shall be fully lined. Fittings shall be in accordance with dimensional requirements of ASME B16.42 or ASME B16.5. 49 Instrument tee shall slip between two flanges on the main run. Branch connection shall have a Class 150 flange for the branch size. 50 Sch 160 pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections NPS 1/2 through NPS 1. Sch 80S pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections in NPS 1-1/2 through NPS 2. 51 Plastic lining in pipe shall be in accordance with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PVDF plastic-Lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. Pipe shall have Class 150 flanged ends. Pipe shall be equipped with means to vent pressure from between plastic liner and steel pipe. 52 Fittings shall be in accordance with ASTM F1545 standard specification for PVDF plastic-lined ferrous metal pipe and fittings. All wetted surfaces shall be fully lined. Fittings shall be in accordance with dimensional requirements of ASME B16.42 or ASME B16.5. 53 This item shall be used for orifice flange tap connections only. 54 Sch 80S bore shall be required for NPS 1 and smaller flanges to be compatible with spiral wound gaskets. 55 If gate and globe valves are insulated, extended bonnets may be required to prevent oxidation of the packing if anti-oxidizing packing is not used. 56 Seamless pipe shall not be substituted without calculating because seamless pipe over 0.375-inch wall has a lower allowable stress than EFW pipe. 57 Fitting class rating shall match pipe wall thickness. 58 For oxygen pressures greater than 1000 psig (6895 kPag), oxygen supplier shall be consulted. 59 Branch weld shall be used with reinforcement pad if the minimum wall thickness (specified or measured) of the header at the branch location exceeds xxx where xxx equals the wall thickness value for the letter symbol shown in the legend. Full encirclement reinforcement (length equals twice branch pipe OD) shall be used if the wall is less than or equal to xxx. 60 Piping shall be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. Shop fabrication shall be maximized and all spools shall be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. Valves and inside of field welds shall not be galvanized. 61 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with cover up. 62 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with cover up or in a vertical position with upward flow. 63 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with hinge pin vertical or in a vertical position with upward flow. 64 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position or in a vertical position with upward flow. 65 Sch 80S pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections in NPS 1/2 through NPS 1. Sch 160 pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections in NPS 1-1/2 through NPS 2.

66 Sch 160 pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections in NPS 1/2 through NPS 1. XXS pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections NPS 1-1/2 through NPS 2. 67 XXS pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded connections in NPS 1/2 through NPS 1. Wall thickness shall be calculated for pipe and pipe nipples in NPS 1-1/2 through NPS 2. 68 Bolt torque requirements shall be in accordance with gasket manufacturers recommendation. Retorquing shall be performed in accordance with PIP PNSC0036, Section 5.4. 69 Minimum Type 3 laying condition shall be required in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C151/A21.51. 70 Maximum depth of bury is dependent on surface load and laying condition. If depth of bury and/or surface load limits for Type 3 laying conditions are exceeded for any given pipe sizes, alternate required laying conditions and/or pipe class shall be specified. 71 Sch 160 pipe and pipe nipples shall be used for threaded pipe connections in NPS 1/2 through NPS 2. 72 All components may not be available from all manufacturers in size ranges shown. 73 Sch 80 pipe can be used on NPS 1/2 through NPS 2 for certain services. 74 Pressure ratings provided in the PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE RATINGS table are calculated in accordance with ASME B31.3 and are based on tubing material of construction and wall thicknesses as listed in TUBING. 75 Tubing shall be adequately supported, i.e., long tubing runs shall be run along protected channels, angles, beams, etc. 76 Tubing shall be marked with manufacturer name/brand, size, material/grade, and heat number. 77 The preferred method for directional change shall be bending. All bends shall be made with tube benders. Flattened, kinked, or wrinkled bends shall not be acceptable. 78 This line class shall not be used for natural gas (methane) service. Manufacturers literature shall be consulted for other service limitations (pneumatic, etc.). 79 After testing and flushing are complete, all piping that handles potable water shall be disinfected in accordance with governing codes/standards and local regulations. In the U.S., American Water Works Association Standard, AWWA C-651, shall apply. 80 If operating at 850F (455C) or higher in services that can cause intergranular attack, consideration shall be given to specifying all welded components to be thermal stabilized annealed before welding (to eliminate sensitizing) or to taking other steps to eliminate intergranular attack. 81 Integrally reinforced branch connections, tees, and reducing tees are permitted as an acceptable alternative branch connection. 82 Stud-bolt lengths may need to be longer because of increased thickness of the insert flange. 83 Threaded joints shall be permitted only at jacket jumper and instrument connections. Threaded joints, except tube fittings and instruments, shall be seal-welded. 84 Nonreducing flange shall be used against equipment or at a specification break to piping with nonreducing flange. 85 Ej shall be 0.80 if jacket component is split and rewelded. 86 These valves shall be used for jacket vent and drain applications. 87 All HPDE pipe and pipe components shall be manufactured and supplied through a single (same) manufacturer. 88 HPDE materials shall not be used in hydrocarbon-contaminated (2% concentration or greater) soil. 89 HPDE shall be provided with long-term UV protection (2% to 3% carbon black). 90 The effects of surge pressure on the system shall be reviewed for design velocities greater than 5 feet/second. 91 Butterfly valves may require HPDE spacers on each side of valve to permit disc rotation. 92 Flange adapters shall be provided with a serrated sealing surface. 93 One edge of the back-up ring shall be radiused or chamfered. This edge shall fit against the back of the flange adapter. 94 Bolting torque requirements shall be in accordance with gasket manufacturers recommendation. 95 Examination shall be in accordance with the requirements and acceptance criteria of ASME B31.3, Section A341.4. 96 Mitered (fabricated) fittings shall be used if molded fittings are not available. 97 If used, buried metallic components shall be protected from corrosion by coating, cathodic protection, or other acceptable means. 98 All fittings molded or fabricated shall meet full pressure rating (FM Class 150). Fiberglas reinforcement (covered) of HPDE fittings shall not be permitted. 99 The use of copper or nickel alloy materials should be considered in piping systems in which high-velocity and/or high-turbulent flows exist downstream of pressure let-down valves. Guidelines contained in CGA G-4.4, Para. 4.3.3.4 shall be followed for the selection of materials in such areas. 100 Maximum allowable service temperature for PVC Type 1120 pipe shall be 140F (60C) for water service. Rating may be lower for other services. Manufacturer's specifications shall be checked for other specific services.

101 ASME B31.3, Paragraph A323.4, prohibits the use of this material in flammable service above ground and for compressed air or other compressed gas services. 102 All material shall be cleaned in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1, Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.4, and ASTM G-93. 103 The selection and use of austenitic stainless steels shall be consistent with the velocity limits recommended in CGA G-4.4. 104 Pipe shall be sized to keep maximum fluid velocity a 5 feet/second (1.5 meters/second) or less. 105 Manufacturers specifications shall be consulted for support and mounting requirements for the intended service. 106 Fabrication shall be in accordance with ASTM D2855. Fabrication with PVC or CPVC plastic pipe and components shall be in accordance with manufacturers instructions and ASME B31.3, Paragraph A328. 107 Plastic pipe shall be Type 1, Gr 1 PVC with Cell Classification 12454 and shall be in accordance with ASTM D1784 and ASTM D1785. 108 Flanged ends shall be full face. Dimensions shall be in accordance with ASME B16.1, Class 125. 109 Fitting material shall be PVC, Cell Classification 12454 and shall be in accordance with ASTM D1784 for materials and ASTM D2467 for dimensions. 110 Branch on lateral shall be full-sized. 111 Washers shall be used on back side of flanges. 112 Deleted. Replaced by Note 41. 113 Heating of surfaces of pipe shall not be permitted. 114 Bending of plastic pipe shall not be permitted. 115 Integral wire electrofusion couplings shall be installed in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Use shall be limited to closure joints in which butt fusion is not feasible. 116 These flanges shall be used only for final fit-up to fixed flanged equipment. 117 Maximum allowable service temperature for CPVC type 4120 pipe shall be 200F (93C) for water service. Rating may be lower for other services. Manufacturers specifications shall be checked for other specific services. 118 Plastic pipe shall be Type IV, Gr 1 CPVC with Cell Classification 23447 and shall be in accordance with ASTM D1784 and ASTM F441. 119 Fitting material shall be CPVC, Cell Classification 23447 and shall be in accordance with ASTM D1784 for material and ASTM F439 for dimensions. 120 Flanged connections shall be used only if required. 121 Manufacturer shall be consulted for available sizes. 122 PP shall be protected against UV light penetration if placed in an outdoor environment. Protection methods shall include painting, taping, or insulating. Manufacturer shall be consulted for recommendations. 123 If used with butterfly valves, stub end ID shall be chamfered at flange or spacers shall be used. Manufacturer shall be consulted. 124 Sizes 14 inches and larger shall use stub end with blind flange. 125 Bolting torque requirements shall be in accordance with manufacturers recommendation. 126 Stainless steel flat washers shall be used between the nut and back-up ring in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. 127 Manufacturer shall be consulted for diaphragm material. 128 Manufacturer shall be consulted for seat/seal material. 129 Miter or fabricated fittings shall be used only with owner approval. 130 Miter and fabricated fittings shall have a 25% derating factor. 131 All pipe and pipe components shall be manufactured and supplied through a single (same) manufacturer. 132 GRVD shall be the designation for roll-grooved ends. 133 All roll grooving dimensions and procedures shall be in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and with ANSI/AWWA C606. Roll grooving tool shall be provided by the same manufacturer as the couplings. Parts or components from different manufacturers shall not be interchanged. 134 Bolt-on outlets shall be available for NPS 8 headers with NPS 2 through NPS 4 branches, for NPS 6 headers with NPS 1-1/2 through NPS 4 branches, for NPS 4 headers with 1/2 through NPS 3 branches and for NPS 3 headers with NPS 1/2 through NPS 2 branches. 135 Grade of gasket material shall be verified as suitable for the intended service. EPDM shall not be used for water containing hydrocarbons or air containing hydrocarbon vapors. If hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon vapors are present, nitrile gasket material shall be used. Design limit for nitrile in hot water shall be 150F (66C). 136 Sch XS pipe shall be used for threaded connections for NPS 2. 137 Sch 160 pipe shall be used for threaded connections for NPS 2. 138 Sch 40S pipe shall be used for threaded connections for NPS 2.

139 DI fittings shall be in accordance with AWWA C110/ANSI A21.10 and shall be an acceptable alternate to AWWA C153/ANSI A21.53 fittings in NPS 3 through NPS 16. 140 CL345434C shall be the minimum required cell classification. Higher cell classifications shall be acceptable. 141 Gaskets for PO joints are available as integrally restrained or unrestrained. If mechanical joints (MJs) are used, self-restraining glands are required. Designer shall specify type gasket required. 142 Carbon steel lap joint flanges shall be acceptable for use in systems for which FM approval is based on use of carbon steel lap joint flanges. 143 Underground metallic piping shall be coated in accordance with PIP CTSE1000. 144 All piping that handles potable water shall be certified to NSF Standard 61. 145 The piping system shall be installed and hydraulically tested in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 24. The test shall be performed with all fittings uncovered at 200 psi or 50 psi over the maximum system working pressure, whichever is greater, for not less than 2 hours. The testing contractor shall not exceed the values specified in NFPA 24. 146 Lined pipe manufacturer shall be consulted for recommended bolt length. 147 Washers may be recommended by the lined pipe manufacturer. 148 If pipe wall thickness is greater than schedule 80S, and the nominal pipe is greater than NPS 12, ASTM A358 pipe material shall be considered. 149 Drilling of insert flanges shall match jacket piping size. Drilling of non-reducing insert flanges shall match core piping size. 150 Core branch connections should consist of tees and reducer or reducing tee except in the case of vents, drains, and instrument connections where branch welds are permitted in accordance with the branch connection tables. 151 ASME B 31.3 Code, Paragraph A323.4 cautions against use of this material in toxic or flammable fluid services. 152 Pipe shall be classified in accordance with ASTM D 2310 as RTRP Classifications -11FE or 11FF. 153 Pipe fittings shall be classified in accordance with ASTM D 5685 Classification 11C*E. 154 Pipe to fitting connections shall be taper-to-taper adhesive bonded or straight-taper adhesive bonded. 155 All fittings molded or fabricated shall meet the full pressure ratings of the piping material class. 156 All pipe, fittings, flanges and adhesives shall be purchased from same manufacturer. 157 Design conditions, flow velocities, etc. shall be considered to determine liner thickness for process media. Liner manufacturer shall be consulted in the selection of suitable liner thickness. 158 Bolting torque requirements shall be in accordance with flange manufacturers recommendation. Retorquing shall be performed in accordance with PIP PNSC0036, Article 5.4. 159 If mating a RF flange to a FF flange face, a filler ring shall be provided over the flange raised face. 160 Wafer style check valves shall be limited to 500F maximum. 161 Pipe shall be classified in accordance with ASTM D 2310 as RTRP Classifications -12ED1 or 12EF1. 162 Pipe fittings shall be classified in accordance with ASTM D 5685 Classification 12E*D. 163 Valve manufacturers recommendations regarding the use of piping gaskets with these valves shall be consulted. 164 Carbon steel outer rings shall be limited to 800F maximum. 304 SS spiral wound gaskets with flexible graphite filler shall be limited to 900F maximum. For higher temperatures, high temperature gaskets (e.g., gaskets with graphite filler protected by inner and outer mica barriers) shall be used. Gasket manufacturers shall be consulted regarding the specific application, the recommended winding and filler materials, and the anticipated life under the service conditions. 165 Tubing sizes are designated by outside diameter.
