COURSE CODE: LPN 110 COURSE TITLE: THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS in NURSING COURSE CREDIT: 3 units TOTAL HOURS: 54 hours COURSE DESCRIPTION: In-depth understanding of theories and concepts of nursing as a Profession, Art and as a Science. It shall include discussions of different roles, functions and responsibilities of the nurse utilizing the nursing process towards health promotion and illness prevention observing ethico-moral and legal responsibilities in nursing practice. This course deals with the meta concepts of a person, health, environment and nursing as viewed by the different theorists. Likewise, it includes non-nursing theories such as systems, developmental and change theories. It presents how these concepts and theories serve as guide to nursing practice. It further deals with health as a multi-factorial phenomenon and the necessary core competencies that the nurse needs to develop.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Learn the importance of nursing theories 2. Draw implications on the theories and concepts of nursing as a profession, art and science. 3. Use the nursing process as a framework to design and implement a plan of care. 4. Analyze ethico-moral situations involving nursing practice. 5. Develop a commitment to enact a theory-based practice 6. Evaluate factors that create dilemmas in nursing/health care 7. Critically examine the importance of diverse cultural, historical, legal, and economic influences in nursing practice and the health care industry

COURSE REQUIREMENTS Assignments will not be accepted more than one week late. 10 points will be deducted from the earned grade of a late assignment. All activities will be done inside the class or depending on the topic to be delivered, usually through oral recitation of the different theories and legal aspects of nursing Quizzes, assignments, recitation, attendance, reports and major exams Term grade: Average quizzes = 40% Class standing = 10% Major exam = 50% Term grade= 50% CS and quizzes + 50% exam Final grade= 50% (prelim, midterm, pre-final) + 50% (final)
