Mozilla Announces Firefox OS Developer Phones :-

This is the year Firefox OS
launches, and Mozilla has
kicked it off with the next
stage for their OS.
Mozilla has tied up
with Geeksphone who are
offering their very own Fire-
fox OS-based phone in
partnership with Telefonica.
Its important to note tat
this is not a consumer de-
vice, Firefox OS hasnt
launched yet; rather this
is a developer device in-
tended for those who want
to preview the OS on an
actual device before they
go ahead and release it for
the public. Developers can
use these devices to test their applications on an actual device rather than a simulator.
There are two phones that will be available, code named Keon, and Peak that have different specifi-
cations. Peak is the more powerful one, but neither of them are up the mark with current generation
phones; although they are probably representative of the kind of devices Firefox OS is made for.
The specifications of Keon are as follows:
CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz.
UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA).
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE).
Screen 3.5 HVGA Multitouch.
Camera 3 MP.
4 GB (ROM) and 512 (RAM).
MicroSD, Wifi N, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB.
Battery 1580 mAh.
The Peak variant has similar specification, but with the following differences:
A faster dual core CPU: CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2Ghz x2.
A larger screen: Screen 4.3 qHD IPS Multitouch.
A better camera: Camera 8 MP (back) + 2 MP (front) with Flash.
A better battery: 1800mAh.
Both these phones are obviously unlocked (and come without a SIM).
If you are not interested in getting a developer phone, you can use the Firefox OS simulator or you
can even try and run Firefox OS on your own mobile device.

Instagram website frames users' photos:-
Facebook-owned Instagramon Tuesday enabled its website to
serve as a gallery for images taken by users of the smartphone
photo-sharing service.
"Instagram, at its core, is about seeing and taking photos on-the-
go," company co-founderKevin Systrom said in a blog post.
"You can now browse your Instagram feed on the web, just like
you do on your mobile device."
Instagram.com was designed without the option of uploading im-
ages from the internet because the service is about pictures
"taken in the real world, in real time" by people on the move, ac-
cording to Systrom. Features at the website, which was launched
last year with Instagram members' profiles, include being able to "like" pictures and join online conver-
sations about images.
Facebook acquired Instagram last year. The original price was pegged at $1 billion but the final value
was less because of a decline in the social network's share price .

Android-Based Network Built to Study Cyber Disruptions and Help Secure
Hand-Held Devices :-
Sandia cyber researchers linked together 300,000 virtual hand-held computing devices running the An-
droid operating system so they can study large networks of smartphones and find ways to make them
more reliable and secure. Android dominates the smartphone industry and runs on a range of computing
gadgets.
The work is expected to result in a software tool that will
allow others in the cyber research community to model
similar environments and study the behaviors of smart-
phone networks. Ultimately, the tool will enable the com-
puting industry to better protect hand-held devices from
malicious intent.
The project builds on the success of earlier work in which
Sandia focused on virtual Linux and Windows desktop sys-
tems.
"Smartphones are now ubiquitous and used as general-
purpose computing devices as much as desktop or laptop
computers," said Sandia's David Fritz. "But even though they are easy targets, no one appears to be
studying them at the scale we're attempting."
The Android project, dubbed MegaDroid, is expected to help researchers at Sandia and elsewhere who
struggle to understand large scale networks. Soon, Sandia expects to complete a sophisticated demon-
stration of the MegaDroid project that could be presented to potential industry or government collabora-
tors.
The virtual Android network at Sandia, said computer scientist John Floren, is carefully insulated from
other networks at the Labs and the outside world, but can be built up into a realistic computing environ-
ment. That environment might include a full domain name service (DNS), an Internet relay chat (IRC)
server, a web server and multiple subnets.
A key element of the Android project, Floren said, is a "spoof" Global Positioning System (GPS). He and
his colleagues created simulated GPS data of a smartphone user in an urban environment, an important
experiment since smartphones and such key features as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities are highly loca-
tion-dependent and thus could easily be controlled and manipulated by rogue actors.
The researchers then fed that data into the GPS input of an Android virtual machine. Software on the vir-
tual machine treats the location data as indistinguishable from real GPS data, which offers researchers a
much richer and more accurate emulation environment from which to analyze and study what hackers
can do to smartphone networks, Floren said.
This latest development by Sandia cyber researchers represents a significant steppingstone for those
hoping to understand and limit the damage from network disruptions due to glitches in software or
protocols, natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other causes. These disruptions can cause signifi-
cant economic and other losses for individual consumers, companies and governments. "You can't
defend against something you don't understand," Floren said. The larger the scale the better, he said,
since more computer nodes offer more data for researchers to observe and study. The research
builds upon the Megatux project that started in 2009, in which Sandia scientists ran a million virtual
Linux machines, and on a later project that focused on the Windows operating system, called
MegaWin. Sandia researchers created those virtual networks at large scale using real Linux and Win-
dows instances in virtual machines. The main challenge in studying Android-based machines, the re-
searchers say, is the sheer complexity of the software. Google, which developed the Android operat-
ing system, wrote some 14 million lines of code into the software, and the system runs on top of a
Linux kernel, which more than doubles the amount of code. "It's possible for something to go wrong
on the scale of a big wireless network because of a coding mistake in an operating system or an ap-
plication, and it's very hard to diagnose and fix," said Fritz. "You can't possibly read through 15 million
lines of code and understand every possible interaction between all these devices and the network."
Much of Sandia's work on virtual computing environments will soon be available for other cyber re-
searchers via open source. Floren and Fritz believe Sandia should continue to work on tools that in-
dustry leaders and developers can use to better diagnose and fix problems in computer networks.
"Tools are only useful if they're used," said Fritz. MegaDroid primarily will be useful as a tool to ferret
out problems that would manifest themselves when large numbers of smartphones interact, said
Keith Vanderveen, manager of Sandia's Scalable and Secure Systems Research department. "You
could also extend the technology to other platforms besides Android," said Vanderveen. "Apple's iOS,
for instance, could take advantage of our body of knowledge and the toolkit we're developing." He
said Sandia also plans to use MegaDroid to explore issues of data protection and data leakage,
which he said concern government agencies such as the departments of Defense and Homeland Se-
curity.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates: I am not as cool as Steve -

Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates, who is trying to
save the world by reducing child death rates and eliminating
polio, has said that he is 'less geekier' that Steve Jobs.
During a recent interview, Gates talked about his foundation's
annual letter, which outlines his organization's recent
successes in global health. "It's good news that you wouldn't
hear," the founder of Microsoft said of the information he
shared in his annual missive. "I share what I've been able to
see in my travels to Africa and Asia."
But after Gates shared his "good news," programmed presenter Stephen Colbert broke it to the humanitarian
that he's just not as "cool" as the late Apple co-founder was, the Huffington Post reports. Colbert told Gates that
he is 'out there saving the world, yet you he does not have the "cool factor." When asked if he 'ever want to be
the cool guy?', Gates said Jobs had his own style, and approach," and that he is a 'little geekier' than Jobs was.
The Ecological Badminton Robot: Optimizing Energy Effi-
ciency in Machine Design:-
A robot to play with! A childhoods dream has now come true for
researchers at the Flanders Mechatronics Technology Centre
(FMTC) in Belgium. Wim Symens and his team pioneered the
development of the first robot ever to play badminton. But this
robot is only a guinea pig to test a software application designed
to optimise energy efficiency in machine design. A new com-
puter program is now capable of detecting the energy guzzlers
in so-called mechatronic systems, that are controlled by both
software and electronics. The results are impressive. Following an energy efficiency analysis of the badminton
robot with the new software, the team made some small changes where most of the energy was identified as
being wasted in the robotic system. Ultimately, the badminton robot and the innovative software will help engi-
neers of many different industries cut down the energy consumption of their production line making it more
sustainablewhile reducing the costs of their end products. It is eco-innovation at its best.

E-commerce in India ; Story Of FlipKart(Case Study):-
Its been about 2-3 year since Flip-
kart started moving from being a
pure bookstore to selling mobiles/
DVDs etc. Then we had cribbed
about a possible brand dilution and
investor pressure. Probably we were
never sure about the bigger picture.
Since then, Flipkart went for a major
brand makeover, making it look
more upmarket. There has been
large newspaper ads, TVCs and a
lot of web ads. But unlike other eCommerce companies the inorganic marketing kicked in only when
the product was strong.
Flipkart already had a proven model execution with books and extending to other verticals did not need
infrastructural changes. Flipkarts real achievement has been in solving the pain points in Indian eCom-
merce that most well funded players are still complaining about.
Here are some of the things that Flipkart has done well in solving each of these problems.
1. Discoverability:
It is the case with any venture on the web, How does the customer find us? Answer: Organically!
Flipkart has been the baap of SEO. This has been the most important contributor to their success. I
say this, because only when you see people coming to you, you get encouraged to deliver more and
keep adding. There is no fun (motivation) in adding features to a product that no one is using.
Though from what I had noticed, SEO did not come the straight way. There were particularly 2 things
that are worth mentioning.
a. Yahoo News: Until last year Flipkart had a feed of Yahoo News on its product pages. From what I
understand of SEO, this is to increase the keyword density and introduce original content on the page,
as the product description across all books sites is same. This was removed later as it was violating the
Yahoos ToS on using the service for a commercial site. Check the Waybackmachine here. I loved the
risk they took for this.
b. We Do Not Sell Used Books: This one is my favorite. If you check the Waybackmachine in the last
line you will notice the following text.
We DO NOT sell old books or used books. All the books listed at Flipkart.com are new books.
The books listed at Flipkart.com are NOT available for free download in ebook or PDF format.
The magic of this text is that if you search for free ebook or pdf download you would always get
Flipkart among the top results. These are very popular search queries and Flipkart had nothing to do
with it but still they cashed in. This was also the time when Flipkart had Adsense embedded. People
would come to the site, see nothing like a PDF download button, and then see an ad for PDF
download and click. This meant more revenue for Flipkart. I have done this atleast twice myself. Given
that the margin on books are very small after the discount, Flipkart was probably earning more by say-
ing what they did not do than by doing what they actually were suppose to do.
2. Payments:
No credit card/netbanking, fear to transact online, repeat transaction failures, no access to web these
are the common problems with online payments. What Flipkart is doing to overcome these?
From what I last counted, Flipkart had atleast 4 different Payment Gateways integrated. They intro-
duced Cash-on-Delivery. Then they are also doing order on phone. Payment via DD/Cheque is also
accepted.
2 basic things that they are currently doing that takes little tech. effort but quite some product manage-
ment will:

a. Auto redirection to banking site: Unlike
most other ecommerce sites, Flipkart never
lands you on CCavenue page, you are auto
redirected to the banks page where the info
is required to be filled. Flipkart by-passes 1
unnecessary page by passing the required
parameters directly to CCavenue and not
through a user interface.
b. Banks Status: Flipkart maintains its own
real time status if the banks netbanking is
working or not. So there are no surprises af-
ter you have chosen the bank and then go to
the netbanking page.
And if you think Flipkart gets very good rates from Payment Gateways, not really. Atleast 1 big PG that I
am aware of charges quite high rates to Flipkart, atleast 40-50% more than to lesser known players.
3. Inventory:
I come from a traditional business family where we believe in selling what we have. The world of eCom-
merce really amazes me when I see the players keeping a standard list of products and then go out pro-
curing it only when there is an order placed. Imagine if you go to a brick & mortar shop and after billing
the manager sends a boy to a nearby store to get the goods. This is where the problem starts. There is
no inventory on their end and there is no live status of inventory from their supplier. Remember The Al-
chemist, Never Promise something that you dont have.
After placing an order, they would keep looking for the product at multiple places. After a week you might
get a call saying that either the product is not available and we will do a favor by refunding your money
or if the product is there, it is not the color/size that you asked for.
Flipkart was no different in 2009, a couple my friends used to get similar calls after days of ordering. But
for the last 1 year atleast Flipkart maintains its own inventory(or atleast it seems so). They are selling
what they have. From pure hearsay, Flipkart is taking up a big warehouse in Bangalore and is in talks for
one in NCR as well. One of the few companies that is using the funding to build a business and not
spend it like a FMCG company on ads.
4. Delivery:
I have dealt with courier companies in my last startup and am quite aware of the fcukall standards they
have. Most similar looking envelopes are never delivered thinking that it is a marketing package and no
one would track it. They would be willing to bargain on rates but would never say anything about the ser-
vice. Paying a premium may not solve the problem always.
Flipkart is exploiting this problem as a cashable need gap and building its own delivery backend. Flipkart
is seen delivering through their own delivery boys in Bangalore and at times within 12hrs from order.
Flipkart has started putting fliers in newspapers in Bangalore with a product listing, call-to-order phone
number and a promise of delivering tomorrow. This means more discoverability, no payment problem
and no delivery delay. The way it is actually suppose to be.
From what I heard from multiple sources, Flipkart is looking to build its own courier company. The recent
$20Mn funding from Tiger Global was only part of a larger sum they are known to be raising. Flipkart is
looking to raise $100Mn at a valuation of $200Mn.
Recently, Flipkart has started selling everything from cameras, laptops to gaming consoles to personal
and health care electronic products. There are major talks about Amazon acquiring Flipkart but it would
only make sense to grow it bigger and better from here. A handover wouldnt see the same product man-
agement will.
Flipkart is a story that is come from smart work and an it is possible attitude. There is a need to for a
couple of more stories like these and there would be no cribbing about Indian eCommerce not working.
