We are excited to teach your students this year and to learn new things from them each day. This year, we will develop our reading, writing, and math skills and also spend time learning about science and social studies. Below is a list of our goals for the year for each of our students. Reading and Writing: Expand sight word vocabulary (reading and spelling sight words) Decode words using knowledge of phonics, syllables, and word parts Read aloud with fluency that sounds like natural speech Discuss story elements including plot, character, setting, and events Identify the main idea and key details in literature and informational text Understand basic punctuation (capitalize first letter of a sentence, use periods and question marks) Print legibly Write in complete sentences Write multiple sentences that support a main idea Write narrative, informational, opinion, and functional pieces Math: Recognize and write numbers up to 120 Count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100 Add and subtract to 20 Solve addition and subtraction story problems using multiple methods Recognize, compare, sort, and manipulate 2-D shapes Identify, describe, and reproduce patterns with numbers, shapes, or colors Use simple graphs to record information and answer questions Recognize simple mathematical symbols (+, -, =, >, <) Tell and write time to the hour and half hour Recognize halves and fourths Measure objects and compare their lengths Understand greater than, less than, equal to
Social Studies: Locate Arizona on a map of the United States and identify its symbols Describe defining characteristics of Egyptian civilization Identify national symbols and monuments Describe exploration and the colonization of the United States Construct and interpret simple maps with a compass rose and map key Create charts and timelines showing an understanding of past and present Participate in group decision making and recognize shared values and goals as students in the same community, despite differences in backgrounds Science: Conduct simple, hands-on experiments and ask questions & make observations Compare the results of an investigation to predictions made at the start Use tools such as a magnifying glass, ruler, and balancing scale Learn the basic needs & characteristics of living things & describe the environments they live in Identify the basic properties of Earth materials and describe various material changes Observe and discuss weather Recognize the components of simple circuits Identify light sources and identify and describe various shadows
