PIP ADG004 Specification for Producing CAD Graphics for Process Industry Practices

PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All Practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice. This Practice is subject to revision at any time by the responsible Function Team and will be reviewed every 5 years. This Practice will be revised, reaffirmed, or withdrawn. Information on whether this Practice has been revised may be found at www.pip.org.

1.

Introduction
1.1 Purpose This Practice provides requirements for PIP Function/Task Teams and CAD representatives for producing Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) associated with the production of PIP Practices. 1.2 Scope This Practice describes the work process for coordinating the production of CAD for the Practices and provides requirements for ensuring consistency of style and presentation of the Practices. This Practice provides detailed instructions for the Function/Task Team representative and CAD representative. This document is a complete revision of PIP ADG004, and therefore, revision markings are not provided.

Definitions
block (AutoCAD): Drawing symbol used in the creation of a CAD drawing (e.g., valve symbol, flange symbol, instrument bubble, etc.) border: Form that defines the bordered drawing area and title block of a CAD drawing. PIP borders may be downloaded from the PIP website at www.pip.org . CAD operator: Drafter assigned by the CAD representative to produce CAD drawings CAD representative: Liaison assigned by the engineering firm that provides CAD services for a Function Team. The CAD representative ensures the graphical accuracy of the CAD drawings and the deliverables in accordance with this Practice. CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form: Appendix B of this Practice. The transmittal lists the drawings associated with a Practice. It ensures the graphical and technical integrity of the CAD drawings. The form is be completed by both the CAD representative and the Function/Task Team representative. cell (MicroStation): Drawing symbol used in the creation of a CAD drawing (e.g., valve symbol, flange symbol, instrument bubble, etc.) Cell Library (MicroStation): Data file containing the drawing component symbols used to create CAD drawings Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD): Drawings or illustrations produced on computer systems and drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation)

Function/Task Team representative: Function/Task Team member assigned to coordinate the production of the CAD portion of a Practice with the CAD representative. The Function/Task Team representative ensures Task Team review of the technical content of the CAD drawings. The Function/Task Team representative also ensures the CAD deliverables are provided to the PIP Editors in accordance with this Practice. This function is normally performed by the lead author of the Practice. landscape: Orientation of the border that presents the data in a horizontal style 11 inches wide, 8.5 inches high portrait: Orientation of the border that presents the data in a vertical style 8.5 inches wide, 11 inches high prototype drawing (AutoCAD): CAD file that has been preset with a standard sheet size, title block, borders, layers, and symbol library. It is the template for the CAD operator to begin a new drawing. seed file (MicroStation): CAD file that has been preset with a standard sheet size, title block, borders, layers, and symbol library. It is the template for the CAD operator to begin a new drawing. symbol legend: Legend of standard symbols, line definitions, and other drawing components used to create CAD drawings. Also referred to as a lead sheet.

Requirements
3.1 Deliverables 3.1.1 CAD Representative 3.1.1.1 CAD representatives coordinating the CAD graphics portion of Practices shall deliver to the Function/Task Team representative a CD containing the following files: a. .DWG AutoCAD b. .CEL MicroStation Cell Library c. .DGN MicroStation d. .PDF Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format e. CADTRANSMITTAL.DOC A Microsoft Word file. See Appendix B. The native file can be downloaded from www.pip.org/members/forms/Cadtransmittal.doc . 3.1.1.2 The CD shall be labeled with the discipline name (e.g., Piping, Process Control, etc.), referenced Practice number, and current date (month/year).

3.1.2

Function/Task Team Representative Function/Task Team representative coordinating the CAD graphics portion of the Practices shall deliver to the PIP Editors a CD containing the items listed in Section 3.1.1.1 and labeled in accordance with Section 3.1.1.2.

3.2

Content and Layout 3.2.1 Function/Task Team 3.2.1.1 The Function/Task Team shall decide the applicable units of measure. This information shall be provided to the CAD representative. 3.2.1.2 The Function/Task Team shall provide the CAD representative a drawing number and title for each drawing. 3.2.1.3 Drawing numbers shall be assigned in accordance with the following conditions: a. If the drawing stands alone as a Practice, then the drawing number is the Practice number. b. If the drawing is an appendix of a Practice, the drawing number is determined by the Function/Task Team, and the Practice number is referenced in the title block. 3.2.1.4 The Function/Task Team shall complete the Function/Task Team representative section of the CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form and produce the list of drawings. See Appendix B. The CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form is available at www.pip.org/members/forms/Cadtransmittal.doc . 3.2.1.5 The Function/Task Team shall ensure that the CAD representative section of the form is complete before submitting to the PIP Office. 3.2.2 CAD Representative 3.2.2.1 CAD representatives shall provide CAD produced as follows: a. AutoCAD and MicroStation shall both be provided in the PIP-approved versions. Refer to www.pip.org/members/practices for current PIP-approved versions. b. Except for P&ID drawings that may be electronically produced in D size (22 inches x 34 inches), CAD drawings shall be electronically produced in A size (8.5 inches x 11 inches).

c. Standard A-size (8.5 inches x 11 inches) PIP borders shown in Appendix A shall be used. PIP borders are available at www.pip.org . Comment: For 22-inch x 34-inch P&ID drawings, standard D-size PIP borders should be used. d. Title block information shall be completed in accordance with the requirements shown on the PIP borders in Appendix A. e. For AutoCAD, the symbols on the symbol legend shall be delivered on layer 0. The CAD representative shall define the layer convention. f. For MicroStation, the symbols on the symbol legend shall be delivered on level 1. The CAD representative shall define the level convention.

g. For AutoCAD, text font shall be SIMPLEX. If bold text is required, ROMAND shall be used. h. For MicroStation, text font shall be 1. If bold text is required, font 43 shall be used. i. j. Special characters shall not be used. Standard or appropriate abbreviations shall be used (e.g., deg. equals degree, dia. equals diameter, etc.). Text height shall not be less than .07 inch.

k. Only capital letters shall be used. l. m. Minimum width to height ratio should be 0.75. n. Pen weights/line weights shall be defined by the CAD representative. o. Dimensions shall be given in feet and/or inches (U.S. customary units). International System of Units (SI) dimensions, if required, shall be enclosed in parentheses and are in millimeters, unless noted otherwise on the drawing. Examples: 1-0", 6", 1-0" (304), 6" (152). p. Slashes shall be used as line terminators for dimension lines (1/16-inch vertical dimension). q. Arrowheads (3/32-inch long) shall be used on leader lines. r. Designer name or initials shall not appear on the drawing. This information shall be supplied on the CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form.

3.2.2.2 CAD representatives shall provide Adobe Acrobat PDF files as follows: a. PDF files shall be provided in a PIP-approved version of Adobe Acrobat. Refer to www.pip.org/members/practices for current PIP-approved versions. b. Adobe Acrobat PDF files shall be produced directly from the CAD application (i.e., scanned images shall not be accepted). c. Page size shall be set to A-size (8.5 inches x 11 inches) portrait or landscape. Comment: Generation of Acrobat PDF files for P&ID drawings shall also be A-size (8.5 inches x 11 inches) portrait or landscape. d. Grid shall be turned off. e. Drawing shall be zoomed to full extent. f. Drawing background shall be white. g. All text and graphics shall be black. 3.2.2.3 The CAD representative section of the CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form shall be completed. 3.3 Work Process 3.3.1 Function/Task Team The Function/Task Team shall: a. Assign a Function/Task Team representative if the lead author does not fulfill this role b. Develop a consistent numbering system for CAD drawings c. Use U.S. customary units and/or SI dimensions/units d. Define drawing numbers and titles for CAD drawings 3.3.2 Function/Task Team Representative The Function/Task Team representative shall: a. Coordinate the production of the CAD drawings with the CAD representative b. Serve as an interface between the CAD representative and the Function/Task Team and PIP Editors c. Inform the CAD representative of U.S. customary units and/or SI dimensions/units

d. Provide to the CAD representative a copy of the CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form with the title and drawing number filled in for each set of drawings for a given Practice. See Appendix B. e. Perform quality control checks on the deliverables. See Appendix B. f. Ensure the CAD representative has completed the appropriate portion of the CAD Transmittal and Quality Assurance Form

g. Submit to the PIP Editors the deliverables as described in Section 3.1 3.3.3 CAD Representative The CAD representative shall: a. Verify the graphical content of the drawing b. Perform quality control checks on the deliverables. See Appendix B. c. Submit to the Function/Task Team representative the deliverables as described in Section 3.1 3.4 Symbol Legend and Cell Library If practical, each Function Team shall produce a symbol legend and cell library of standard symbols and nomenclature. Symbol legends shall not be a part of a Practice. The symbol legend provides the CAD designer with the symbology used for PIP drawings. a. The symbol legend shall be produced in PIP-approved versions of AutoCAD and MicroStation. For current PIP-approved versions, refer to www.pip.org/downloads/pdf/wpt/ADGsoftware-upgrade.pdf . b. The symbol legend shall be A-size (8.5 inches x 11 inches) or B-size (11 inches x 17 inches) drawing sheet size. c. Symbols shall be 1:1 scale. d. Electronic and paper copies of the symbol legend and cell library shall be provided to the PIP Office.
