BritishcompanyWindPowerLimitedhasunveiledthenewembodimentofitsinnovative AerogeneratorprojectvisualisedbyleadinginternationalarchitectsGrimshaw.The AerogeneratorXistwicethepowerandhalftheweightofWindPowersoriginalAerogenerator design. TheAerogeneratorXisconsideredoneoftheonlyrealalternativesolutionsavailabletohelp delivertheUKsoffshorewindstrategyinareliableandcosteffectivemanner.Itdoesnothave thesameweightconstraintsasanormalwindturbineandthebladesdonotsufferweight inducedfatigue.Thisnewdesignishalftheheightofanequivalenthorizontalaxisturbineand itsweightisconcentratedatthebaseofthestructure. TheAerogeneratorXistheconclusionofan18monthfeasibilitystudycalledtheNOVAproject undertakenbyCranfieldUniversity,QinetiQ,StrathclydeUniversity,SheffieldUniversityand WindPowerLimitedsupportedbyconsultantengineersandprojectmanagers.TheNOVA feasibilityprojectwasfundedbytheEnergyTechnologiesInstitute,apublicprivatepartnership comprisingBP,Caterpillar,EDF,E.ON,RollsRoyce,Shell,BP,EDF,EON,Caterpillar,theUK GovernmentandWindPowerLimited. WindPowerLimitedisalsodelightedtoannouncethatitisintheprocessofenteringa MemorandumofUnderstandingwithAruptohelpsuccessfullycontinueprojectdevelopment. SpeakingattheunveilingofAerogeneratorXJohnRoberts,HeadofEnergyatArup,said: Despitetheinstallationofanumberoflargewindturbinesoffshore,theproblemsofincreasing capitalcostfordeeperwaterremainsunsolvedasdoestheissueofsafeoperabilityinthemarine environment.Thereisatremendousopportunityfornewideastomakeadifferencetothe commercialviabilityandoperabilityofoffshorewindpower.Morecosteffectivesolutionswill beessentialifoffshorewindpoweristomakethehopedforcontributiontotheUKsGHG emissionreductiontargets. ProfessorFeargalBrennan,HeadofOffshore,ProcessandEnergyEngineeringatCranfield University,said:Upsizingconventionalonshorewindturbinetechnologytoovercomecost barriershassignificantchallenges,notleasttheweightoftheblades,whichexperienceafully reversedfatiguecycleoneachrotation.Asthebladesturn,theirweightalwayspullsdownwards, puttingachangingstressonthestructure,inacyclethatrepeatswitheveryrotationupto20 timesaminute. Inordertoreducethefatiguestress,thebladesectionsandthicknessesareincreasedwhich furtherincreasesthebladeselfweight.Theseissuescontinuethroughoutthedevice.Drivetrain mountingsmustbestiffenoughtosupporttheheaviercomponentsinsidethenacelleontopof thetower,otherwisethesystemscanbecomemisalignedandthesupportstructureisalso exposedtoextremelylargedynamicthrustandbendingstresses,whichareamplified significantlywithanyincreaseinwaterdepth. TheoBirdofWindPowerLimitedsaid:Offshoreistheidealplaceforwindpowerbutisalsoan extremelytoughenvironment.TheUSwindresearcherswhoworkedonverticalaxisprojects havealwaysregardedthetechnologyasgreattoworkwithatseabecauseitcanbebig,tough andeasilymanaged.WeareextremelygratefultotheETIwhohadthevisiontohelpuspickup fromwheretheUSleftoff.Byfacilitatingprojectslikeourstheycontinuetheheritageofgreat engineeringinBritain. NevenSidor,PartneratGrimshaw,said:TheAerogeneratorXembodiesthebestininnovative engineeringinBritain,andcontinuesanillustrioustradition.Grimshawhasgreatregardforthis engineeringtradition,andisdelightedtohelpinitsrealisation.
