WORK VALUE Occupational Reinforcer Patterns (ORPs) indicate which work values and needs are likely to be reinforced or satisfied by a particular O*NET-SOC occupation. The use of work values to describe occupations is based on the Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA) developed during the Work Adjustment Project at the University of Minnesota under Research Grants from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (Dawis, R.V., England, G.W., & Lofquist, L.H., 1964; Dawis, R.V., & Lofquist L. H., 1984). This theory proposes that job satisfaction is directly related to the degree to which a person's values and corresponding needs are satisfied by his or her work environment. The TWA identifies six work values each with a corresponding set of needs. Nine hundred O*NET-SOC occupation have an ORP consisting of: 1) 6 numerical scores indicating the mean extent to which each work value is reinforced; and 2) 21 numerical scores indicating the extent to which each need is reinforced. An interest inventory helps you identify your interests, especially those related to the world of work. It is designed to assist you in identifying training, education, or careers with activities that you might like doing. The U.S. Department of the Interior web site (http://www.doi.gov/octc/holland.html) provides an outline version of the Holland interest types inventory that provides for a self-report of interests and skills, as well as sample occupations that may be matched to these interests and skills. < Work Values Instruments allow you to pinpoint what you value in jobs (such as achievement, autonomy, recognition, support, and conditions of work). You can identify occupations you are likely to find satisfying based on the similarity between your work values and the characteristics of jobs. The Buros Institute maintains a listing of various work values and vocational interest inventories. They are available online at www.unl.edu/buros/index18.html < Personality Measures help to identify your personal style in dealing with tasks, data, and other people. It is available online at www.un1.edu/buros/index12.html A brief essay on the use of biodata inventories as selection instruments is available at ericae.net/db/edo/ED338702.htm < Honesty Tests are specialized personality tests designed to tell prospective employers which applicants will follow the rules. Sometimes they are even used to determine who is more likely to steal from the company. The questions are generally about what you have done in certain situations in the past, what you think you would do in the future, or your attitude toward someone or something. Additional information regarding honesty tests is available on-line www.smallbiz.findlaw.com/text/. Sometimes lie detectors are used for honesty tests.
