Introduction
The aim of this project is an optimization program capable of obtaining the best possible lamination configuration in order to maximise/minimise the natural frequencies of a fibre reinforced flat plate. The program should choose from a set of predefined materials and fibre orientations. In order to achieve this, the Discrete Material Optimization Method (DMO) as described by Jan Stegmann in Analysis and Optimization of Laminated Composite Shell Structures - is used along with a commercially available finite elements program (Ansys) and a numerical computing language (Matlab).
Results
Currently the optimizer has only been tested for one layer optimization cases. The results have been confirmed using Ansys and some examples follow.

Sensitivity Analysis
If we ignore dampening effects, then the eigenproblem can be described in terms of (eigenvalue) and (eigenvector) as:
Conclusions
Overall the results obtained using the optimizer are very similar to the ones obtained with Ansys analysis and have showed good convergence of results. Nevertheless, some work remains to be done before achieving the multi-layer, multi-material optimization desired for the final program.
