Binary Numbers and Computing : Lindsey Young ECOMP 7100 Binary Numbers and Computing What do you know about electricity? : Electricity is the flow of electrical power or charge Electricity is neither renewable or nonrenewable We get electric energy from sources such as coal, nuclear or solar energy What do you know about electricity? Electrical Circuits : Electrical Circuits Electrical currents flow in a circular path In this image there are four main components to this circuit: The power source The conductor The light bulbs The switch When the switch is on the electrical current is running. When the switch is off the electrical current is not running. Binary Number System : The binary number system consists of two numbers: 0 and 1 Computers use the binary number system to process information The binary number system is also known as base-two Binary Number System Decimal Number System : We use the decimal computing system daily The decimal computing system has 10 numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 The decimal number system is also known as base-ten Decimal Number System Binary Numbers Video : Binary Numbers Video Converting from Decimal to Binary : Each place in binary is a power of two: Example: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, & so on There can only be two numbers in binary: 0 and 1 FOR EXAMPLE: 15 How many 32s are in 15? 0 How many 16s are in 15? 0 How many 8s are in 15? 1 How many 4s are in 15? 1 How many 2s are in 15? 1 How many 1s are in 15? 1 The binary nu mber for 15 is: 1111 Check your work by adding the power of two numbers with 1s: 8+4+2+1= 15 Converting from Decimal to Binary Lets try some together! : What would 12 and 20 be in binary form? 32 16 8 4 2 1 12= 1 1 0 0 Lets check: 8+4= 12 CORRECT! 20= 1 0 1 0 0 Lets check: 16+4=20 CORRECT!
