Judges raises a tough case

Legislators turn thumbs down so far
BY DAVE COLLINS

HARTFORD A proposal by Connecticut Chief Justice Chase T. Rogers to give most state judges pay raises of $45,000 over the next four years is drawing criticism from some state lawmakers, who say the state cant afford the increases. Rogers proposed the raises on Oct. 3 to the state Commission on Judicial Compensation, saying judges pay hasnt

increased over the past five years and needs to be brought in line with salaries of judges in other states. Rogers proposed a pay raise of about 11 percent for the fiscal year that begins next July and 5.5 percent raises in the following three years. A Superior Court judges salary would increase from about $147,000 to about $192,000 over the four years, while Supreme Court justices pay would rise See JUDGES, Page 7A

As public officials, judges do not expect to become wealthy. But fairness and the need to retain highly qualified jurists require that judicial salaries maintain their value.

Charles, left, and David Koch are multi-billionaires and arch conservative foes of President Obama. They have spent millions of dollars in support of Mitt Romneys campaign.

ERIDEN The price of gas has customers at Danbys Gulf Express on East Main Street scrimping. Mostafa Salah, store manager, said nearly every day people come in with a fist full of change to see how much gas they can buy. They are hurting, he said. Its no good for me. Its no good for the customers. A conservative political action committee wants that sentiment to carry to the polls on Election Day so much so that for two hours today, between 4 and 6 p.m., customers can buy up to 15 gallons at Danbys for $1.84 per gallon.

That was price per gallon when President Barack Obama took office in January 2009. The Virginia-based Americans for Prosperity PAC is paying the station the difference from its regular price, which on Wednesday was $3.93 cash, $4.03 credit. Americans for Prosperity opposes Obamas energy policy and believe it has led to higher prices at the pump. State Sen. Len Suzio, RMeriden, said he plans to be at the station today to tell drivers how the states gas taxes also raise the price. Connecticuts gas tax makes prices here 28 cents per gallon higher than the national average. One part of that state gas tax is fixed, at 25 cents per gallon. See GAS, Page 6A

To wipe out one of the worst achievement gaps in the nation, two out of every 100 students in Connecticut, at each grade level, must improve from performing below goal level on standardized tests to performing at or above that level. And that will have to happen every year until 2020. That means 719 more students at each grade level would need to score at goal level next year, according to the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now. In 2014, those students must maintain their scores, while another 719 students improve their scores

Former Oxford Tax Collector Karen Guillet, seen at a court hearing in July.

OXFORD The municipal pension of Oxfords former tax collector Karen M. Guillet will be revoked in full under an agreement filed Wednesday at Hartford Superior Court. Guillet, 62, of 2 Douglas Drive, pleaded guilty to one count of firstdegree larceny under a plea deal she accepted at Milford Superior Court on July 31. She was charged with stealing more than $243,000 from the town. State Attorney General George C. Jepsen said Wednesday that Guillet, who was a municipal employee in Oxford from December 1984 until January 2010, has signed a stipulation for judgment, agreeing to the revoca-
