world of the Church. The tle itself grabbed my
aenon, and reading the arcle was more so. The
arcle focussed on how some peoplewithin the
Church, or within the mediahave grabbed onto one
solitary sentence or acon of Pope Francis and then
aempted to divine an agenda for his whole
poncate.

The writer of the arcle took a number of examples,

and placed the supposedly indicave statements in
their proper context. In doing so, the writer revealed
that those who took these isolated statements and
acons had actuallymissed what the Holy Father was

The Chrisan faithful who gather together as one to
await the Lords coming are instructed by theApostle
Paul to sing together psalms, hymns, and spiritual
songs (cf. Col 3:16). Singing is the sign of the hearts
joy (cf. Acts 2:46). Thus St Augusne says rightly,
Singingisforonewholoves.Thereisalsotheancient

Have you ever wondered if theres a connecon
between the celebraon of Mass and our daily life?
And if so, just what it means?

The arcle below, wrien by Elizabeth Harrington, the
Educaon Ocer of the Brisbane Liturgy Commission,
was originally published in The Catholic Leader last
December. I hope it might provide some basis for
reecon

The most frequently requested topic for talks during

my visits to deaneries this year was Understanding
the Mass. It is clear that many people want to
understandthestructure,symbols,gesturesandother
aspects of the Mass more fully so that they can
parcipatebeer andbe drawn more deeply into the
mystery.

I begin by tracing the development of the Mass and

note how, through all the changes of history, the
Churchfor2000yearshasconnuedtodoEucharist
by taking, blessing, breaking and sharing bread as
Jesus did with his disciples on the night before he
died.

I go on to explore the connecon between Mass and

everyday life. Parcipants oen talk about how
sharing Eucharist with their parish community is
central to how they live as Chrisans in the world.
What they were describing is how liturgy is the
summit and source of their Chrisan life, as it is
referredtointhedocumentsofVacanII.

Assembling for liturgy is not some sort of mini

retreat from the world, an escape from the harsh
realies of life. When we come to Mass we bring
ourselves and our lives as they really are the
experiences that make us who we are; our hopes,
successes and failures, our mes of joy and sadness;
the accumulaon of events and memories that make
up life. We also bring the collecve hopes,
experiences, achievements and sins of the world in
whichwelive.

ThelinkbetweenMassanddailylifeismadeexplicitin
preaching which deals with the reallife issues people
arefacing,andinPrayeroftheFaithfulpeonswhich
bring to prayer the current events of the world and
thepressingneedsofthelocalcommunity.

Mass is not a holy event that is separate from the

basic building blocks of our Chrisan living but a
sacred acon which takes them up in a pleasing
oeringtoGod,along withthesacriceofChrist.Our

celebraon of our lives because they become part of
theEucharist,partofthesacrice,becauseChristjoins
them to his and part of the thanksgiving because we
recogniseGodsloveintheeventsofourlives.

This has praccal implicaons for the way we live out

our lives. If we have broken bread together at
Eucharist and prayed that we might become one
body, one spirit in Christ, how should we treat one
another aerwards? If we have feasted on this
spiritual food, how do we respond to people who are
hungry?ThosewhogathertosharetheBodyofChrist
are sent forth to be the Body of Christ in their daily
lives in homes, families, neighbourhoods, places of
work, social gatherings, sporng clubs, wherever they
ndthemselvesduringtheweek.

In his book Worshipping Well, Lawrence Mick

So that we might receive Communion in a t and
properway,pleasebeawareofthefollowing:

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
formofreverence,includingagenuecon,should
thereforebeavoided.
Communion by selfinncon (selfdipping) is
neverpermied,sincewereceiveCommunionand
never take Communion. Please refrain from this
inappropriateacon.
We regret that we do not have the physical
facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and
respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling to
receive Communion while part of the procession,
since this is contrary to the nature of the
Communion procession itself. Your cooperaon in
honouring this request is very much appreciated,
andwethankyouforyourconsideraon.
