Selection of main dimensions for a bulk carrier

From the database provided, taking into account the similar characteristics of
ships and bulk carriers ordered consistently.
According to the graphs obtained is then calculates the main dimensions of the
vessel. (Length, breadth, draught, depth, block coefficient, prismatic coefficient,
maximum section coefficient, water plane area coefficient, displacement. )
Presented below the graphs obtained from
relationships, extracted from the database:

With a dead Weight of 29000Tn, we obtain a relation of T/D= 0.73 m.

Later the displacement is calculated depending on the weight died in the above
mentioned graph: with a dead weight of 29000 Tn. We obtain a relation of:
35365.854 tn

= 35365.854 tn

Therefore we obtain a Displacement of 35365.854 tn

We calculate the Coefficient of Block of vessel:
Having the first dimensions calculated previously we find the Coefficient of block
on the basis of the following picture to develop our first approximation of our
length.

Podemos observar que se encuentra entre 0.75-0.84 por tanto tenemos un

coeficiente de cloque igual a 0.81.

La longitud del PMB puede estimarse directamente de CP, ya que:

LPMB = (2CP-1)*(L)= ((2*0,818)-(1))*(176,68)

LPMB=112,368

Parmetros dimensionales calculados:

El coeficiente de rea de flotacin se puede estimar mediante la frmula dada
por Schneekluth y Bertram (1998):
CWP= CB/(0,471+0551*CB)

CWP = 0,81/(0,471+0,551*0,81)

CWP= 0,883

The standard longitudinal position of the centre of buoyancy is assumed in the
range given by the following graph, as a function of the Froude number.

The method assumes that CR has to be corrected only when the actual position
of the centre of buoyancy is forward of the standard range, whereas, if it is aft,

it is not necessary to correct the residuary resistance coefficient.

Propeller selection
Assignment:
Using the resistance curve calculated for the ship in Assignment 2 by means of
the method of Guldhammer & Harvald:
Design condition
Determine the optimum propeller for a design speed of 28knots;
Off-design conditions:
Determine the propulsion data (revolution rate of propeller, quasi
propulsive coefficient, delivered power, brake power) for a range of
speed between 14knots and 31knots;
For each speed and corresponding propulsion point perform a
cavitation check reporting the propulsion point on the Burrill's
cavitation diagram.
In the calculations:

Consider a number of blades Z=5;

Consider a propeller diameter D=5m;
Assume the centre of the shaft to be at a distance D/2 above the keel line;
Consider a relative rotative efficiency equal to 0.97;
For all cavitation checks, use a reference vapour pressure for the
inception of cavitation pV=17kN/m2.
When using the Burrill's diagram, consider 10% as the acceptable limit of
cavitation. The following expression can be used for the 10% backcavitation limit curve in the C , C plane:

The following data are given:
For the basic ship "MP" before lengthening:
Hydrostatic data;
Mass mbase 32426t
Vertical position of the centre of gravity KGbase 14.7m ;
For the parallel middle body with unitary length:
Hydrostatic data;
Mass per unit length mPMB / LPMB 184t / m
Vertical position of the centre of gravity KG PMB 13m ;
Assume that the original ship is lengthened with the introduction of an additional
parallel middle body having a length LPMB 40m . Assume, in addition, that the
mass of the additional parallel middle body is proportional to the length LPMB .
Under these assumptions and neglecting the effect of trim:
Determine the draught Tbase and the metacentric height GM T ,base of the
vessel before the addition of the parallel middle body;
Determine the mass mPMB and the vertical position KG PMB of the centre of
gravity of the parallel middle body having length LPMB 40m ;
Determine the mass mnew and the vertical position KG new of the centre of
gravity of the vessel after the addition of the parallel middle body;
Starting from the hydrostatics given for the parallel middle body of unitary
length, calculate the following hydrostatic quantities, as a function of the
draught, for the parallel middle body having length equal to LPMB 40m :
Volume PMB [m3];
Waterplane area Aw, PMB [m2];
Vertical position of the centre of buoyancy from the keel line KB PMB [m];
Transversal metacentric radius BM T , PMB [m];
Vertical position, from the keel line, of the transversal metacentre
KM T , PMB [m];
Starting from the hydrostatics of the original vessel and of the parallel middle
body of length LPMB 40m , determine the following hydrostatic quantities for
the lengthened vessel:
Volume new [m3];
Waterplane area Aw,new [m2];
Vertical position of the centre of buoyancy from the keel line KB new [m];
Tranvsersal metacentric radius BM T ,new [m];
Vertical position, from the keel line, of the transversal metacentre
KM T ,new [m];

Determine the equilibrium draught Tnew of the lengthened vessel;

Determine the metacentric height GM T ,new of the lengthened vessel at the
equilibrium draught Tnew .
Consider the density of sea water as 1.025t/m3.
