~(으)로 to ~ (location toward which you act – curious to know the destination)

(1) (noun) 은/는 어때요? “how about (noun)”

(2) Negate action verbs and descriptive verbs (=adjective) by placing 안 in front of the verb. In
하다 action verbs, 안 (usually) goes between the noun and 해요. To express that the subject
cannot do something for some reason, use 못 “cannot.” The placement is the same as 안.

(3) The marker 도 “also”
If two sentences connected by 그리고 “and” are of the same structure, you can use the marker 도
“also, too” in the second sentence to emphasize commonality.
1. When using the marker 도, don’t use the subject marker 이/가 or the object marker 을/를. 도
replaces those other markers.
강아지를 좋아해요. 그리고 고양이도 좋아해요. I like puppies, and I also like kitties.
식당에 가요. 그리고 커피숍에도 가요. I go to the restaurant, and I also go to the coffee shop.
쇼핑몰 shopping mall, 백화점 department store, 식료품점/슈퍼마켓 grocery, 옷가게 clothes

1. The final consonant ‘ㅅ’ in 못 is pronounced as [ㄷ]; however, when combined with the initial
consonant ‘ㅎ’, the [ㄷ] and ‘ㅎ’ are pronounced together as [ㅌ].
2. The final consonant ‘ㅅ’ in 못 is pronounced as [ㄷ]; however, when followed by the initial
consonant ‘ㄴ’ or ‘ㅁ’, it is pronounced as [ㄴ].

2. 주요 문장 (Key Sentences)
(1) (으)세요 is used when making polite commands. Add (으)세요 to the verb stem. To form
negative commands, add 지 마세요 to the stem.

(2) When you want to repeat some part of the conversation over and over again, simply leave the
repeated part out and just add 요.
A: 사거리에서 어디로 가요? Where do we go from the intersection?
B: 왼쪽으로 가세요. Please go left.
A: 그 다음은요? (=그 다음은 어디로 가요?) And after that?
B: 계속 직진하세요. Keep going straight.
A: 윤아는 거기에 있나요? Is Yunna there?
B: 네, 여기에 있어요. Yes, she is here.
A: 지예는요? (=지예는 거기에 있나요? ) How about Jiye?
(3) In a formal situation, such as in company meetings or presentations to the public, rather than
use the informal polite form 아/어요, use the formal ending (스)ㅂ니다. Form the present tense
by adding (스)ㅂ니다 to the verb stem. When asking a question, 다 on the end turns into 까?

3. 발음 (Pronunciation)
The vowels ‘ㅗ’ and ‘ㅓ’ are often mispronounced. Say ‘ㅗ’ with a rounded mouth, like the ‘o’
in “row.” ‘ㅓ’ is pronounced like the ‘a’ in “awake.” Practice the following.

2. 주요 문장 (Key Sentences)
(1) ~ㄹ(을)래요 used with a verb to indicate intention or planning.
(2) ~기 때문에 makes an adverb clause for reason like because. ~기 때문에 to the verb stem.

Note. 때문에 without ~기 is similar to because of. Noun + 때문에 indicates a reason.
1. 다른 약속 때문에 그 날은 만날 수 없어요. Because of another appointment, we can’t meet
on that day.
2. 흐린 날씨 때문에 사진이 잘 나오지 않았어요. Because of the bad weather, the picture
didn’t come out well.
3. Because of you, (something negative happened).
4. Thanks to you, (something positive happened).
(2) ~았(었)으면 좋겠어요 is used to indicate a speaker’s wish, which is not realized yet. Place
으면 after the past form of a verb.
Note. Is it wrong to say “내가 대통령이면 좋겠어요”? No, it’s not wrong. Then it becomes a
conditional instead of a subjunctive mood.
Note. “Noun + (이)라면” also makes a subjunctive mood. We can exchange 이었으면 with
이라면; and 였으면 with 라면:
1. 내가 대통령이라면 좋겠어요. 3. I wish I were a bird.

I met a friend downtown yesterday. I met him for the first time in ten years. I was very glad to
see him. We went to a bar. We drank until 12 o’clock midnight in the bar. We went to another
bar for the second round. We kept drinking until 4 o’clock in the morning. I took a taxi about 5
o’clock and got home. I pressed the bell, but my wife did not open the door. About 10 minutes
later, my wife opened the door. But my wife gave me a hard time.
