Megabass Live-X Margay

By Philemon Foo With so many lure choices in
the market today, one can easily get confused. Heck, even season anglers get confused. Sometimes we buy lures because of what our friends and masters recommend. Sometimes we buy lures because of what we read in magazines such as this. Sometimes we buy lures just because of design and color. Lures are designed to catch the angler...

Deep And Cranky 7 8

What A Jerk
Recently I was handed a few lures to test. One of them is the Megabass Live-X Margay of which is a jerkbait. It comes with a bib long enough to drive it to the bottom. How deep I am not sure but the one I was playing made little trenches at the bottom of the lake. Oh yes, the lake I went to is situated in the Clearwater Sanctuary, Perak. Early in the morning at about 7.15am, I gave the Live-X Margay a little swimming lesson just off the balcony. Chalet number 126 is ideal for lure fishing off the balcony as the water area there is free of lily pads and underwater snags. To the left of it is a dense lily pad and snag area. To the right are some lily pads and a bit of snags. The balcony of chalet 126 is really strategic (for now).
Good swimmer and loves to dig.

10

Erratic Dancer
If the Live-X Margay were to be doing an exotic dance, guys will be throwing lots of cash. It is an easily managed lure and can certainly mimic an injured fish well. Its erratic swimming action is what we anglers pay for and it is this erratic action that caught two peacock basses and a good size marble goby. So what do I think about this lure? It caught 3 fishes within an hour of fishing and we buy lures to help us catch fish, right? The Live-X Margay lived up to its expectations. Price wise, you will have to consult your pocket. It is okay to pay a little more once in a while for a good lure especially when you really want one.

It dances so wildly even the plastic frogy wanted to have a go.

11

12

There are cheap lures, there are expensive lures, and there are good lures. You will probably still buy lures that your friends say are good, that magazines say are good, and lures that capture your eyes. Well, this is a good lure and it will capture eyes... (continuation of my statement in the first paragraph).... and it is up to the anglers skill in using the lure that caught him or her, to catch the fish. Abu Garcias Popping Rockets

By Philemon Foo When it comes to lures we want lures
that allows us to play them easily and well. We want them to mimic something that has a heart and swims. We also want them to create disturbances and attract the fish or angry predators.

Pop Culture
One of these lures is a popper. Most anglers would have heard of a popper but a lot I dare say, have not used one before. Popping is an art and it requires a certain amount of skills to get it going, at least that was what it used to be. These days, brands that manufacture them have been making them in a way where they pop easy.

Easy Popping 15 16

One such easy popper is the Abu Garcia Rocket Popper. I have on several occasions used the Rocket Popper and they pop really well. They are also almost self-popping. Just cast them out and twitch them back. The popping is almost automatic.

Anyone Can Pop

Wanting to take a photo of the Abu Garcia Rocket Popper in action, I got my wife to pop the popper while I took some shots. It was really surprising how she managed to do it despite not having used one before. All I said was to try to get the lure to make splashes and I showed her the rod movement. After that, she was popping and she did it pretty well. She even almost caught a fish.

The Abu Garcia Rocket Popper is very easy to pop with.

17

18

My Thoughts
If you want to try popping but have not gotten to it, the Abu Garcia Rocket Poppers are a very easy way to start. They are easy to pop and they pop relatively well. Definitely something to consider.

My wife playing the Abu Garcia Rocket Popper ALMOST like a pro.

Shimano Aldebaran - Smoother That Silk

By Philemon foo

What is the difference between a muscle-car,

say the Ford Mustang and an Audi A8 or perhaps a BMW 7 series? The muscle car, here being the Ford Mustang, is powerful, smokes its tyres, corners like a dog with some oil on its legs, and is freaking loud and obnoxious.

The Audi A8 or the BMW 7 series is quiet, not as fast, corners with elegance, and arrives in styles and glamour. Both categories of cars have their followers and most followers have both categories of cars. Well, this test drive I had the opportunity to play with the Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG of which falls under the Audi A8 and BMW 7series category, yes, the elegantly glamorous one.

23

24

Missing Something
The instant the Shimano Alderbaran BFS XG landed on my hands I knew that something was missing. I am no psychic but I can tell. I also know exactly what it is that is missing. The answer is grams. Yes the Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG has been on a diet and has lost some weight. I dare say that it is the lightest low profile baitcasting reel around. This proves that the war of the weightlessness goes on between fishing tackle brands, and we like it.

Boo To Silk
Is silk really the smoothest thing around? If you think so, you are seriously outdated. And no, it is not the babys bottom either, as the English put it. Give the Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG a cast and you will be feeling the smoothest cast you have ever felt from any low profile baitcasting reel. The feeling is seriously magical. A light cast would send the lure out easily and with such smoothness that would put silk to shame. When it comes to casting light lures and paperclips, this will be the reel to use.

25

26

Casting Or Flying?
I have cast many reels in my previous line of work and also in my life of fishing. I have been impressed many times with reels that can cast long distances. The Shimano Aldebaran is a reel that you do not cast your lure with. It is a reel that you would be flying your lures with. The lightest cast would send your lure to distances that most reels can achieve with harder casts. Push the cast a bit further and you will be hitting that squirrel off the tree at the opposite side of the lake. Well, depending on how large the lake is of course. What I am trying to say is that this reel can and will easily outcast many other reels currently available in the market. It is one of the best reels around for casting light lures.

27

28

Yumeyas Influence
The Aldebaran comes with a shallow spool and a unique centrifugal braking system also known as the Special BFS Yumeya Spool and Brake system. The centrifugal braking system of the Aldebaran comes in 8 points, meaning there are 8 brake blocks that helps you to control the spool.

Overall Performance
Drag strength is rated at 3.5kg. I did not catch any fish with it and thus I am unable to comment but 3.5kg drag for a reel like this is acceptable since it is for finesse fishing. I did not have the reel for a long time but what I can say is that when it comes to casting, nothing beats it, and it feels just like driving an elegant, quiet, smooth, and refined luxury car. All loveliness comes with equally impressive price tag.

Special BFS Yumeya 8 point braking system Special BFS Yumeya ultra light magnesium alloy spool 6 Star clicking star drag Gear ration 8.0:1 (Darn, that is fast) Ultra light magnesium alloy body Hyper tensile brass gears

29

30

What I Think
If you can afford it, go for it. Life is too short to not have some of the best things every once in a while. For the rest of us, there are always muscle-cars to pull brutes out of their holes and fill their lungs with tyre smoke.

Abu Garcia REV3 STX Abus New Workhorse

By Philemon Foo

horse of a reel under the Revo series for quite some time now. Their latest offering is an attractive lower profiled reel with a larger gearbox. I had the opportunity to put one to the test recently and I must say that it is quite an exciting reel.

The Abu Garcia Revo STX has been a work-

The Sleek Prowler

Taking a look around and about the Abu Garcia Revo STX shows a sleek sporty baitcaster, very much like an exotic sports car. With a lower profile the reel sat comfortably in my hands giving me a better grip. A better grip to me adds confidence to the cast. The larger gearbox boasts of the reels hidden power, the power to crank. Usually when someone tells me this I would want to test this out myself. Playing deep divers can be tiring on the wrist and arm especially with a less powerful reel as these lures have higher resistance in water. The Revo STX does this quite well.

33

34

There is some weight reduction on the new Revo STX. The reel feels lighter and Abu Garcia claims to have trimmed off some 29% of its fat. This is great news as a lighter reel makes for a less tiring fishing trip.

Stopping Power
Every reel has some amount of stopping power and the Revo STX have a good amount of it. To test this I took the Revo STX to the exotic pond. This pond allowed me to pit the Abu Garcia Revo STX against the red tail catfishes of the Amazon and another species from someplace else. These fishes tested the power of the drag that sat inside the Revo STX. The fishes were easily defeated by this powerhouse.
34 36

With 20lb of max drag, playing the red tails was easy. It has more than enough drag to tame the brutes allowing my thumb a more relaxing fishing time instead of having to come in hard as secondary drag. Apart from fishing at the Exotic Pond I also had the pleasure of having the Revo STX accompany me on a trip to the Clearwater Sanctuary in Perak.

37

38

Casting In Hard Places

The Abu Garcia Revo STX is one of those reels blessed with good casting abilities. Having good casting abilities helped a lot especially when I was fishing from the balcony of one of the chalets at the Clearwater Sanctuary. Casting lures from the balcony is not as easy as one may think. There are obstructions everywhere such as the roof, the wooden roller shades, metal cables, etc. However, with a smooth spool and braking system, the Revo STX allowed me to cast using various casting techniques with ease. With a combination of a strong and smooth drag as well as brakes, catching a few peacock basses and a good size marble goby, and bringing them up to the balcony was made easy.

39

40

Dual Braking Action

Having both centrifugal and magnetic brakes in a reel is great. It helps a lot with casting as well as reducing birds nesting. The Abu Garcia Revo STX comes with both the centrifugal and magnetic brakes making this reel a superb reel for learning baitscasting if one is willing to spend a little more for a mid price range reel and I think you should if you can.

Safe From Speed Cameras

The model I tested looked sporty but when it came to speed, it reacted more like an executive sedan and not the sports car that it looked like. With a 6.4:1 gear ratio, this Revo STX was great when it came to playing lures. No qualms at all. It is when you are casting for the sebaraus (Hampala Barb) that a faster reel or rather higher gear ratio reel would be preferred. Still, there is no one reel for all types of fishing. Would you compete in a F1 race driving a Volkswagen Polo STi?

41

42

If you are the law breaking, speed camera teasing, lure racer; the Abu Garcia Revo STX do have faster models. They have the AMG class 7.1:1 gear ratio which puts you in the realms of the smokin hot Abu Garcia Revo MGX (the MGX is lighter and... HOT); and the super high speed 8.0:1 model which would put many a Porsche to shame retrieving at a blazing 33 inches per turn (IPT). The sebaraus will be wondering what the heck hit them. I am not sure when or if Pure fishing Malaysia will be bring them in but it will be nice to have a go at them.

Features:
10 High Performance Corrosion Resistant (HPCR) bearings + 1 roller bearing provides increased corrosion protection X2- Crftic alloy frame for increased corrosion resistance C6 carbon sideplates provide significant weight reduction without sacrificing strength and durability Carbon Matrix drag system provides smooth, consistent drag pressure across the entire drag range D2 Gear Design provides a more efficient gear system while improving gear durability Infini brake system allows almost limitless adjustability to handle any fishing situation

43

44

Infini II spool design for extended castability and extreme loads Compact bent handle and star provide a more ergonomic design Ti coated line guide reduces friction and improves durability

45

46

What I Think
To me, this is indeed one of the best ever STX especially if the 7.1:1 and 8.0:1 hits our shores; 7.1:1 because its speed is ideal, and the 8.0:1 because I would love to put it through the mill. The Abu Garcia Revo STX (RVO3) is a reel I will have with me on all trips. I may be fishing with more refined reels such as the Revo MGX or a Shimano Scorpion, but when the brutes are on the rise, the Abu Garcia Revo STX would give me more confidence.

Note: I am in no way claiming that the Abu Garcia Revo STX is superior to the Revo MGX or the Shimano Scorpion reels. What I really meant is that every reel no matter how good has its strengths and limitations. Knowing you reels is as important as knowing your opponents. There is no such thing as a reel for everything.

Knowledge Wise The Fuss About Brakes Part 2: Magnetic Brakes

By Philemon Foo In the December issue we dove deep into the
centrifugal braking systems. In this issue we will take a look at the magnetic braking systems. Magnetic braking systems are nothing new. In fact they have been around for quite some time. They are being used in trains, roller coasters, etc. It actually wasnt that recent that the use of magnetic brakes made its way into fishing reels. In fact the magnetic braking systems have been used in reels for a considerably long time. I have had many interesting conversations about reels with anglers and I have been asked before many a time how do the magnetic brakes really work. Whats baffling is that the spools of which these magnets seem to have some control over are made of aluminium, a material of which is not affected by magnetic forces. If the spools are not attracted to magnets, something must magical must be happening within the reel. Either that or tackle manufacturers and their R&D engineers have been bullshitting us all along.
Magnetic Brakes on the new Abu Garcia Revo STX. 51 52

There is no bullshit nor is there anything magical inside these reels. The engineers actually applied science into their research and development, and after spending a large amounts of money, gave us the magnetic braking system.

Magnetic Brakes
I am sure you have played with magnets and are familiar with how magnets work. Think back to a time when you were still in school (this applies to those who are no longer in school), during the science lessons, when you did an experiment about magnetic fields using metal shavings, a board, and a magnet. By placing a magnet under a board of which contains metal shavings on top of the board; the metal shaving suddenly moves and lo and behold forms a design. That design is that of the magnetic field. Move any piece of metal even those not affected by magnets like the aluminium spool close enough to the magnets and it creates a disturbance in the magnetic field. Magnetic fields are produced by moving electric charges. Moving any piece of metal that conducts electricity such as aluminium (although unaffected by magnets), through a magnetic field, produces an electric current across the conductor, in this case the aluminium spool. This creates the disturbance in the magnetic field and this disturbance is called an eddy current.

53

54

The magnetic braking system goes to work as the aluminium spool rotates, creating eddy currents through electromagnetic induction of which creates resistance thus having an effect on the aluminium spool. A short and more laymen explanation is that the magnetic braking system uses magnets to create an electrical force that helps control the spool via friction generated by the eddy currents. All magnetic brake systems including that of the Shimano Digital Control Brake System (DC) work using the same principles. Shimanos DC system is a more techie in a sense as it uses its own power to operate the system of which is indeed an electromagnetic system. It doesnt have batteries so what happens is that when you cast and the spool rotates, power is generated (like a dynamo), and that power is used to control the electromagnetic system.

Controlling The Forces

To set the magnetic brakes on most baitcasting reels, simple turn the dial that is located at the side plate of your reel. Turning the dial up to max (maximum) actually moves the magnets closer to the spool while turning the dial to min (minimum) brings the magnets away from the spool.

55

56

DC Brakes on the Calcutta

Putting Both Brakes Together

So how do the centrifugal and magnetic brakes work? The centrifugal brakes help you to control the spool from the start of the cast to about 70% of it where the speed of rotation of the spool has reduced significantly enough to lose the effect of the centrifugal forces. The magnetic brakes come into effect at the end of the cast or the balance 30% of the cast where the slower rotation of the spool allows the magnetic brakes to be increasingly more effective. Note that the forces applied are similar throughout the cast. It is only because of the slower rotations that the effect of the force becomes stronger. Well, there you have it. I hope you understand how the brakes in your reel work and can apply them more effectively in accordance to your needs.

Angler s Heaven
Swiss Garden Golf Resort & Spa Damai Laut
By Philemon Foo This month we head to the SwissGarden Golf Resort and Spa Damai Laut Resort in Lumut. The name is indeed quite a mouth full. Lumut is this place with links to many fishing spots. You can take a boat and go fish to your hearts content from here. Pulau Sembilan, Pulau Jarak, Pulau Pangkor,

With Family In Tow

Oh yes, you are on holiday with your family and going away to fish, leaving them for a day or two is not what this column is about. SwissGarden Golf Resort and Spa Damai Laut (darn it is indeed a long name) is one of those special family (with anglers) places. You know what; Ill just call it Swiss-Garden Damai Laut for this article.

The Anglers View: Beyond the pool and trees. 59 60

Location
Located in the state of Perak, it took us about three hours to get to the resort, starting our journey at Subang Jaya, Selangor, and having two short breaks along the way. We used the North South Expressway and exited at Bidor. After Bidor it was small roads and slower moving cars all the way. The road condition is something of which makes one wish that car link-arms, absorbers, tyres, and rims should be tax deductable. After all is it not the fault of the Road Transport Department that road conditions are bad? There are other ways to get there. You can get there from Klang, Kuala Selangor, Simpang Pulai, Tanjung Malim, Changkat Jering, etc.

Lumut town, one of the towns near the resort. 61 62

Nearby Towns
There are a few towns nearby. The resort is like 20 over kilometres to Lumut as well as Sitiawan. Lumut is the jetty area to Pangkor Island. You can also do some shopping there for t-shirts, arts and crafts, and there is also this tackle shop there of which I saw an old Rapala Magnum lure. Sitiawan is like a small developing town with historical buildings as well as modern shop lots. There is also a huge Giant Hypermart, Huge Tesco Hypermart, and Aeon Shopping center where you can do some shopping before heading to the resort.

63

64

The Resort
The Swiss-Garden Damai Laut sits on a huge piece of land which comprises of land (forest, golf course, roads, etc), beach and also a jetty with boats to Pangkor, and swamp (looks like it). One could have fun exploring the area. There is some wildlife within its grounds such as monkey, birds, beetles, etc. A reminder though is to never ever feed these animals. The food that we throw to them may kill them or hurt them in the long run. They can also get violent and attack. You do not want to be attacked by a macaque. They may be smaller in size but what they lack they make up with speed and sharp teeth (fangs).

Vast piece of land with a golf course, some mangrove, and beach. 65 66

Rooms
There are generally two types of accommodations available. There are the hotel rooms which are sweet and there are the apartments such as the Swiss-Court apartments which are currently undergoing some refurbishments and they will be sweet too once they are done. As for the hotel rooms there are rooms overlooking the jungle (trees), garden, car park (for those who want to ensure security of their vehicle I guess), and of course the pool and sea. The once overlooking the pool and sea will be the loveliest.

The room that we stayed in.

67

68

Fun For The Family

The resort itself is located by the sea and they have lots of activities for the family. There is a swimming pool, some driving thing, sea sports, kids club, obstacle course, golf, driving range, spa, etc. There are also excursions like island hoping, snorkelling, trip to Pangkor Island, fishing, etc. They do land excursions as well to places like certain temples, charcoal factory, fishing village, etc.

70

One thing though, exercise is forced upon you. You will have to do lots of walking to get to the beach, to the restaurants, to the recreation centre, to everywhere. Walk, walk, walk, and more walk.

What About Us Anglers?

Yes, there are fishing spots. You could book a fishing excursion with the resort. It cost RM550 for a few hours out at sea. Night Fishing is RM900. What if I dont want to spend that kind of money? What if I just want to do some leisure fishing and steal perhaps an hour or two from my family to wet some lines?

The beach area takes a lot of exercise to get too. 71 72

First there is a place at the resorts beach area where you can fish. It is located just off the beach restaurant. The resort has fishing gear for rental but it is always better to bring your own. Bring your own baits as well. Get a cooler box, fill it with ice and put some drinks in there for the trip. Sneak a sealed pack of squid or prawns in there as well for your fishing. Carry your fishing tackle and packet of bait to the beach. Before reaching the beach you will see the restaurant. Walk to the platform that is built out to sea (well, just a little) and look left. You will see some rocks there. You could park your bait there during high tide.

Fishing area for anglersby the resorts beach.

73

74

There is another place which is away from the public eye. Drive down to the jetty (resorts jetty) of which is about 8 minutes drive from the resorts lobby. You will see this tall lookout tower that also looks like a lighthouse. Head towards the jetty and you will be looking at some mighty fine water. Note that you are not allowed to fish at the jetty and / or from the jetty. The jetty is not accessible most of the time anyway so it is very unlikely that you will be breaking the no fishing rule there. However, there is no where written that you are not allowed to fish from land. Just walk about the rocks (beside the wooden walkway to the jetty) and you will be able to cast your bait out into the river. You could actually cast towards the jetty and areas surrounding it if you want. Fishes like structures right?

Jetty where resort guests can board a boat to Pangkor Island.

75

76

There you have it. Swiss-Garden Golf Resort and Spa Damai Laut, one of the resorts where us anglers can wet our lines and our family members will not complain that we do not spend time with them even on family vacation.

SKILL ENHANCERS

Advance Baitcasting: Introduction

By Philemon Foo When we talk about advance baitcast-

ing, many anglers like it. There are also some anglers who call us show-offs. To me, the more tricks you have up your sleeves the better. When we talk about advance batcasting, we are not talking about shooting at flying cans or lighting a cigarette with a match (although I would very much want to see this).

Tools of the trade. Learning how to use them well will benefit you greatly.

79

80

Advance baitcasting is actually more on the different casting techniques that you can apply to different fishing conditions. Sometimes when we are fishing, our opportunity to catch that big fish is gone just because we are unable to cast out our bait. It could be that we do not have the needed space above and beside us to do a cast, but right there in the water is a large adult predator fish just laughing at Most anglers who fish in our jungle streams or from certain balconies know how important it is to be able to cast without needing the normal required space or an amount of space that we normally need for a comfortable cast.

Are You Ready?

Before we embark on this journey, you should be able to cast relatively well and have good control over the baitcasting reel. You must have the basic foundation of baitcasting and must be able to use them without much thinking, meaning they are second nature to you.

81

82

Advance baitcasting requires you to come out of your comfort zone and do things that may seem quite impossible. Needless to say, the better equipped you are with the basics, the easier it will be for you to advance and pick up new techniques. Okay, enough of scaring you. With this I am assuming that you are indeed ready to move on to advance baitcasting techniques.

Learning Tools
It is very important that you get the right tools to help you pick up these new techniques. Okay, the term right tools may not be the most accurate term to use, perhaps I should say, appropriate tools. I would assume that you already have a baitcasting reel, rod, etc. with you and you have been using them for some time now. To help you learn faster there are three things that I do recommend.

Having the right learning tools is essential.

83

84

Casting Rod
Medium Light action to a maximum of Medium action casting rod will be good especially one that has a softer or a more forgiving tip. As for length, the preferred length will be 56 to a maximum of 6 and not more (with the exception of flipping and twitching). Flipping and twitching are usually done on longer rods 7and sometime longer, but you can still learn and practise on a 56 or 6 rod. I learnt advance casting techniques using a Berkley AMP 56 casting rod and during my time with Pure Fishing, developed the Shakespeare Neptune rod NEC562MA for learning and practising purpose. The Fenwick Eagle GT too has a good rod to learn with.

Lines
As for lines my recommendation would be to use braided lines of not more than 10lb. Ensure that the line is spooled in with a good amount of tension and pressure. Thinner lines are easier to cast and personally I feel that braided lines are easier to manage.
One of the recommended rods would be the Fenwick Eagle GT model EGTC 561 ML.

85

86

Casting Plug
You will need something to cast and one of the things you can cast is a casting plug. Tie the line directly to the casting plug. Some techniques that you will be learning require the plug to be as closed to the tip of the rod as possible.

Casting Techniques
We will be learning a few casting techniques. Some of these techniques will help you get your lure into the water with as little noise as possible, a method that is very important when fishing in high pressured waters where the fishes are easily spooked. Some of the techniques will help you to cast out your lure in the most difficult of situations where space is an issue but the fishes are there. It makes good sense to have the ability to do so as these places where anglers are normally unable to cast a lure into become good safe haven for fishes to hide out.

Casting Plug; one the best things to learn casting with.

87

88

Let us take a look at some of the more advance casting techniques that we will be looking at: a. Side cast. A cast done from the side of the angler of which the rod and reel is held. Somewhat like doing a serve in badminton. This casting technique will help you to cast when you cannot do a normal overhead cast due to overhanging branches or perhaps a roof and or in a situation where there is something perhaps a tree right in front of you. Also a useful technique when fishing on a boat with another angler.

Side cast: doing a cast fromt he side of your casting hand.

89

90

b. Backhand cast. A cast done from the side of the angler opposite that of which the rod and reel is held. Somewhat like taking a backhand shot in badminton. This casting technique will help you to cast when you cannot use the overhead cast or the side cast.

Just imagine taking a backhand shot while playing badminton. 91 92

c. Pitching. A technique that helps you to get your lure out when you are not able to do a overhead cast, side cast, and the backhand cast. This technique allows you to drop your lure in the water with relative quietness.

A great technique to get your lures out when normal casting space is unavailable. 93 94

d. Flipping. A cast similar to pitching but used for more accurate and quiet presentation. This cast is great in especially high pressured waters and when fishing in holes amongst water vegetation. This technique doesnt give you distance but it gives you the greatest amount of accuracy and stealth. e. Underhand cast. Imagine a reverse overhead cast and you will have the underhand cast. This cast is designed to give you distance even when you are unable to do an overhead cast, side cast, and backhand cast, and when you need distance that you are unable to achieve with pitching.

Flipping: best technique for an accurate and quiet entry. Distance however, is limited. 95 96

These are some of the things that we will be going through in advance baitcasting, in the course of a few months. Meanwhile do practise the basics in preparation for the advanced techniques.

Practise and practise and more practise.

The Giant Snakehead: Toman Giant Snakehead, Toman

By Philemon Foo By Philemon Foo

Our statistics show that The

Asian Angler managed to attract readers in many countries from our neighbours such as Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, brunei, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines to those as far away as Australia, Japan, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States of America. With that in mind we have decided to include a section on sport fishes within our region. This section will be great for introducing our type of fishing to anglers from other countries as well as anglers within our region who are looking for fishing tips and improving their fishing knowledge. An appropriate fish to start with will be the toman also known as the giant snakehead.

99

100

Toman (Channa micropeltes)

The toman is known by many anglers to be the freshwater gangster fish. Some call it the tiger of the Malaysian freshwaters. They are territorial in nature and can be aggressive. There have been stories of fingers getting chomped off and one of the most intriguing stories is one concerning a military personal that was diving in one of the Malaysian lakes and got attacked by a toman. The toman bit a huge chunk off his flippers. How true these stories are, well, your guess is as good as mine.

Ferocious fish with stripes like a tiger.

101

102

Tomans have been known to grow really large in days of old. Reports of barrel size specimens crushing lures and pushing over boats have been mentioned in some literature. Given the opportunity they can grow beyond 20kg in weight. The average size these days will be within the region of 1.5kg to 4kg. There are larger specimens but they are rare.

Where Are They Found

Tomans can be found all over Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak as well as in neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos. They thrive in lakes, rivers, and dams. Tomans feed on smaller fishes such as tilapias, lizards, frogs, etc. Season: Thourghout the year.

Tomans readily take lures. They have been known to crush them as well.

103

104

Fishing Tomans
Tomans are air breathers. They will have to come up for air. Casting lures right at them when they rise usually triggers a bite. For areas where there are a lot of rises, use surface lures. If there are two anglers in a boat, one angler could use surface lures while the other could be on deep divers. When there are no rises and no activities, usage of deep divers may trigger a bite. The other alternative is to cast poppers and propeller baits to create commotion on the surface of which usually triggers the tomans instinct to check out the commotion at the surface.

Plastic lures, soft baits, live bait, etc. would trigger an attack by the toman. However, they are cautious too and would readily give the offering a miss.

105

106

For soft plastic bait users, cast the soft plastics to the rise and if the fish decides to give the bait a miss, allow the soft plastic bait to swim to the bottom. If that fails to register a hit, twitch the soft plastic upwards about a foot and allow to drop again. After a few times of twitching unsuccessfully, retrieve your bait and keep a look out for the next rise. Proven soft plastic baits: paddle tails, minnows, pogy, lizards, frogs, and large worms (Berkley Power Worm). Proven hard lures: walkers, deep divers, poppers, and propeller lures. Proven colours: Firetiger, dark colors, red heads, and natural colors. Proven live bait: Catfish

The Battle Of Champions
Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) & Pengail Fishing Competition 2012 By Philemon Foo

For quite a few years now the Royal Selan-

gor Yacht Club and Pengail (Persatuan Pengail Selangor or Selangor Anglers Club) has been hosting a fishing competition around the seas of Port Klang (Straits Of Malacca), annually. The number of participants have also increased over the years of which is a sure sign that the committee that handles the fishing competition, headed this year by a very committed Mr Michael Tay, is doing everything right.

Some of the entries during the competition.

111

112

This years competition was held on the 8th and 9th December 2012. The competition started at 2pm on the 8th December 2012 with boats and yachts leaving the safety of the marina and heading out to sea.

Strong Winds And Rain Storms

Come what may, strong winds, or rain storms, even both; these hardcore competitors grabbed the weather by its collar and fought on hard at sea. From what I was told, the winds were blowing hard, the rains were pelting their boats like rocks from heaven, and the lighting was turning night into day, but they fished on. Not for money, but for pride and glory. Spending a day and a half, not forgetting the stormy night at sea, paid off. One would be surprised to see large specimens of fishes being caught off Port Klang if one is not familiar. Ask any angler who is not familiar with its waters and you will receive a stare followed by Port Klang? Doesnt have good fish right? Wrong.
114

Some nice prizes for the winners.

113

Trophy Fishes
At about 4.30pm on the 9th December, I returned from sea and waited at the weighing station to see what giants got hauled off the sea. There were barracudas, a very good size Spanish mackerel, senohong (African Giant Threadfin Salmon), kurau (Indian threadfin), senangin (threadfin), tebal pipi (brown sweet lips), jenahak (golden snapper), merah (red snapper), etc.

Not only were the catches big, they were of quality fishes as well such as red snapper, grouper, and Spanish mackerels.

Bits And Bobs Of The RSYC

It all started in 1969 when a group of boating and sailing enthusiasts registered a yacht club. Back then it was called Port Swettenham Yacht Club. The club members invested in a 20-tonne slipway of which served hundred of members and visitors over the years. In 1972, the club changed its name to Selangor Yacht Club. Further investments were made for a pontoon system that was imported from Sweden, allowing members and their guests to board in comfort and safety.

2012 Commodore of the Royal Selangor Yacht Club giving a speech during the dinner of the competition. 131 132

On its 20th anniversary (March 1989), the Royal Selangor Yacht Club was officially opened and given its new name by the Patron, His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor. His Royal Highness was a frequent visitor to the Club with his family members, thus awarded the Club his warrant. However, in the year 1992 a fire that spread from the adjacent commercial fuel jetty, destroyed the Clubhouse. The staffs managed to rescue vital administrative records and continued its business in temporary offices located at the present Yard Office whilst the new Clubhouse was being constructed. The new Clubhouse was completed and launched in 1996. Today, with over 1,000 members, a moored fleet of 90 (30 keelboats and 60 powerboats), and a further 130 boats on the Clubs handstand, the RSYC is the largest and most active yacht club in the country.

First Commodore of the RSYC, then called Port Swettenham Yacht Club, Gordon Lang.

Doing Its Bit For The Community

The Royal Selangor Yacht Club is not just about sailing and playing seafarers. They have also been promoting the sport of fishing. The Royal Selangor Yacht Club is the first to conduct fishing lessons called Learn To Fish for all walks of life and these lessons are open to the public as well, with the first done on the 1st of December 2012. It is the aim of the Royal Selangor Yacht Club to get the younger generation off their butts, out of their rooms, away from the internet, and to go do some outdoor activities. They will be organizing boating and sailing lessons soon. For more information please write to the RSYC at info@rsyc.com.my.

Berkley Soft Bait Clinic
By Philemon Foo Berkley, one of the worlds biggest brands

in soft plastic baits famous for Gulp! And Powerbaits who are right smack in the middle of the Bass Masters in the USA, have been instrumental in teaching anglers here in Malaysia how to use soft plastic baits effectively.

On the 8th December 2012, Berkley Malaysia organized one of these clinics and I could not help but to be of attendance. There were about thirty over participants, mainly anglers from around Selangor with the exception of a few from faraway places such as Pahang and Kedah. What would be so attractive that participants are willing to drive hours just to attend a soft plastic bait clinic and drive a few hours back home can sometimes be beyond comprehension of most people but one understand why when one too participates in such a clinic.
Participants of the Berkley Soft Bait Clinic 137 138

Knowledge Is Power
The more knowledge you have the better you can be at what you are doing. Same goes to fishing. To be better anglers and to catch more fish, we need to pick up more skills, techniques, and knowledge. These are our tools and the more tools we have, the better we can perform, and the more fish we catch. Playing soft plastic baits is not just casting them out and reeling them back in. Soft plastic baits are soft, and according to Ming of Pure Fishing Malaysia, they can be made to swim like a live fish, and injured live fish or a scrumptious meal as long as you play them well. If you have not seen how a soft plastic bait swims underwater you probably will not know how best to play them. Pure Fishing Malaysia brought along an aquarium so that we need not have to jump into the lake to see how the soft plastic bait swims. Ming was like a magician performing miraculous illusions of turning soft plastic fishes into sexy live swimmers. All these were done without us getting wet.
Ming of Pure Fishing Malaysia explaining how to work soft baits.

139

140

Slow Moe
Speed of play is an important factor. You can twitch fast and you can reel them slow. You can bounce them off the bottom or just let them swim in the currents. Whatever your choice of play, the soft plastic baits can do it. However, when it comes to Gulp! and Powerbait, and generally most scented baits, you want them to be in the zone for a longer period of time, just enough for the fishes to pick up on the scent and swim for the bait.

Anywhere with water is as good a place to fish for hardcore anglers. Here Ming is showing how a soft bait swim in water. 141 142

Reward For The Deserving

Everyone who attended the clinic deserved a reward. It takes a lot to drag oneself out of bed early on a Saturday (weekend), and go attend a clinic. Pure Fishing Malaysia knows that and thus ended the class with a lucky draw. Lucky winners walked home with rods, caps, etc. If you have missed this event for whatever reason, you should not miss the next one. There is always something new to learn in every clinic. .

Pure Fishing Malaysia gave out some really nice prizes during the lucky draw to lucky winners.

Fishy Tales
Back To Basics: Fishing Vietnam
By Philemon Foo When I mention Vietnam, what comes to your mind?
For some it could be the history of war. For some it could be culture and tradition. For some it could be a place to visit for a holiday. It is also a lovely place to do some shopping if you like leather goods (minus the premium paid for branding) and other artsy stuffs. What about anglers? Well, I am an angler and when a friend invited me to Vietnam, in my mind I was asking a question, how do they fish there? In Malaysia and Singapore we are quite advanced when it comes to fishing as we follow the American and Japanese fishing trends. We have gone from heavy equipment to ultralight tackle and lures do tickle our fancy.

Old School Fishing; a walk down memory lane.

145

146

Do As The Locals Do
To do as the locals do is one of my fishing mantras.Things are very different in Vietnam. The traditional method of fishing is with the pole of which the majority of angler uses, and those that use rods and reels use heavy rods with medium to large size reels. Rod lengths are also longer. I was using a 9 feet rod for pond fishing which is quite normal (they average 10 feet to 12 feet). Anyway, I happily followed my friend to a paypond near his office known to house a lot of Mekong catfish although sizes are not as big as those in Bungsamran. On the side I also requested to use a 6 foot medium action rod for added fun.

Beer By The Crates

We fished at some pondok (platform with roof) that were built on stilts over the water. There are four round tables that would sit eight comfortably in the platform. We occupied two tables; one with our fishing gears and the other where we sat and did our fishing. The table next to us was occupied by a family of six. They were having their lunch and were drinking lots of beer. It surprised me that they ordered beer by crates. Crate after crate came and they downed bottle after bottle. It seems that beer in Vietnam is so cheap that they prefer to drink beer to water (those that can afford).

Weird photo angle but this is how the locals rest their rods when they fish.

147

148

Bait Of A Different Sort

On our way to the fishing pond we stopped at a few places to buy bait of which consist of bread, stinky rice noodles (not vermicelli but thicker ones), and instant noodles. I am about to learn something here I told myself. Rigging the noodles to the hook took some getting used to. The vermicelli is soft and fragile. They break easily. We had to take a bunch of vermicelli and hide the hook within the bunch. Next we would take thread and secure the vermicelli by wrapping the bunch with loops of thread. Casting the vermicelli bait took gentleness and control. Too hard a cast and the bunch of vermicelli would simply come off. To soft a cast and you will not be able to get your bait to where the fishes are, or where we were told theyd be hiding out.

There are some baits that seem unusual to us when we fish in other countries. This here is one of them.

149

150

The instant noodle bait was easier to rig as they are not as soft and fragile as the vermicelli. The method of rigging it the same as the vermicelli bait. However, the catch rate on the instant noodles is not as high as that of the vermicelli. Bread didnt catch much but it was a bait that I am most used too amongst the three. One problem is that the bread bait is far less superior in catching fish as compared to both vermicelli and instant noodles.

The Hunted
Casting out the vermicelli took a lot of getting used to. The first few casts saw the bait dropping off and flying to places unintended. A longer and heavier rod and reel made things tougher. After a while of casting I finally managed to get a hang of things. Not long later we started catching lots of fish like tilapias, carps, and catfish. There is a lot of fish in the pond by Malaysian standards but my friend was not very happy as he says that the catch rate is a lot higher on normal days.

Instant noodles as fish bait? Well, it works.

151

152

Anyway, I lost count of how many fishes we caught during our 5 hours of fishing but what I can say is that when we travel to a distant land to fish, it is best to do what the locals do. You can still use more advanced techniques but local knowledge goes a long way when it comes to catching fish. All in all I had a fantastic time going back to the basics and catching fish without lures, thin lines, and small rods. It was an experience, fishing with different baits that I would have never thought of fishing with. Anyhow, Ill be fishing Vietnam again but this time I will be more ready and perhaps bring along lighter tackle, some lures, and some soft baits.

Fishes big and small took to the bait. Casting nearer the hut landed us a few carps.

153

154

Fishing Vietnam And Things To Bring

Other than the heavy rod and reel, here are some things that you can bring along on your fishing trip to Vietnam. 1. Lighter rods spinning or casting. 6 feet rods will be good enough if using small diameter braided lines. 2. Braided lines of about 15lb to 20lb. Lighter if fishing with small lures and softbaits at the side of the pond. They have haruans (snakeheads) and kalui (gouramy) at the banks. 3. Mid size spinning reel for the catfish and size 100 reel for casting around the bank. 4. Bell or bite alarm if you decide to sit around and chat with friends.

Double hookups were frequent. Tripple hookups do happen although not as frequent. Lots of fish in this pond indeed. 155 156

Tips: For catfish and carp, cast to the middle of the pond. For other fishes like tilapia, jelawat (a carp species), haruans (snakehead), etc. cast around the bank area or under the platform.

Our friend with his catch.

A Knot A Month
Sponsored by Penn Fishing Tying good knots is one of the most important things that any angler must learn. Certain knots should not be used on braided lines as braided lines are known to cut or damage themselves. Certain types of fishing requires thicker lines and yet smaller knots. There are knots for connecting lines to lines. There are knots for connecting lines to hooks. There are knots connecting lines to spool. There are knots everywhere in fishing. While there are many knots that you could use, you will probably stick to your favourites. Anyway, it is good to learn all of them. For this issue we will show you one of the simpler but effective knots, the Palomar Knot.

An Initiative By Penn

The Two Turn Clinch Knot

The Two Turn Clinch Knot (aka Trilene Knot) is a simple knot that is a great choice for attaching monofilament and fluorocarbon fishing lines to hooks, lures and swivels. It is also a great knot choice for novice anglers to learn how to tie and experts like the knot because it can be easily tied at night in complete darkness. Always moisten your line with saliva or water before pulling tight. This is especially important on fluorocarbon lines that are easily damaged by heat from friction.

Fly Fishing 3D HD
By Philemon Foo

Who doesnt have a smart phone these days? I am sure there

are but most people do have a smart phone and we seem to be unable to go through a day without them. Recently my Iphone decided to play hide and seek with me in my car, and for two days I was without it. Those two days were driving me crazy. The guys who washed my car found it and returned it to me. What a relief.

With smart phones we have applications to keep us busy during times when we have nothing much to do. For anglers, a fishing application would be ideal. So for this month we will look at a fishing game. Title Version Developer Size Language Requirements Rating : Fly Fishing 3D HD (Free) : 2.02 : Pascal Inc : 9.9MB : English, Japanese : Compatible with Ipad. Ios 4.3 or later : 4+

161

162

I have played a few fishing games and this is one that I did not delete of my phone. Although it is not realistic but it keeps me occupied when I need to wait in queue for something. Fly fishos will definitely find this game to be fun as it is fly related.

Game play is quite good. Graphics are considered good for mobile gaming.

163

164

The graphics are nice in a cartoony way that reminds me of the first generation Play Station by Sony. This game allows you to fish in different areas and lakes with different flies. Playing the fish is a bit tricky though. It took some getting used to. Overall I like the game. It is basic and doesnt feel as advanced as games on other game consoles but heck, this is a game on a phone, a device made for communication and not gaming. Great to have especially when you have to wait for something and you are getting bored.

On to a fish. The experience of playing the fish is far from the real thing but you have got to monitor the line tension and play carefully lest you lose the fish. Still a good amount of fun.
