Penn Spinfisher V
By Philemon Foo
driving a monster truck. What I am trying to say is that in the city where roads are nice and we dont have to play tough, a sporty car with smooth engine would be great but not when one is driving in the jungle, on jungle tracks, climbing muddy terrain, rocks, and ravines. Most reels can handle generally most kinds of fishing in our waters but when you are in a tug-of-war with a tough reel bursting bugger of a brute, you want the Penn Spinfisher V on your side. Here when I say brute, I dont mean those 40 or 50 or 60 kg sailfish kind of brute. What I really meant are the kinds of brutes that will pull even Superman into the water, slap him a bit, and send him home to Krypton; those kinds of BRUTES.

Fishing with the Penn Spinfisher V is like

15

16

Performance Of A Monster
When it comes to looks the Penn Spinfisher V doesnt look like much. Matt black body with gold colored spool and handle, with gold tattoos, and a black rubber power-handle knob; doesnt really score well in the looks department. Then again, would you put a good looking, softy kind of a model in a ring with Iron Mike Tyson? It wouldnt be just his ears that Iron Mike would be chewing on. Where the Spinfisher V loses out (looks), it gains in performance and strength especially the SSV7500 that I now have in my hands. With a maximum drag of 35lb (I really feel that it is more), the Penn Spinfisher V is a monster to use especially when you consider the price range that it sits in of which is pretty darn decent.

17

18

Give the drag control knob a few turns and you can feel the drag getting stronger. Give it a few more turns and you can feel that hands are turning numb just by trying to turn the spool. A few more turns and your hands would have given up turning the spool. The drag is not at its max yet. There are a few more turns that you can do. That is how much drags the Spinfisher V packs.

19

20

The Spinfisher Vs drag system comes from the proven Penn Slammer of which is an oversized powerhouse of a drag that is sealed and sits safe, protected from the elements. These translates to smooth, powerful, and protected.

Built Like A Tank

Tanks are some of the toughest and scariest looking vehicles every made. They make monster trucks look like cat-walking models. Tanks are really tough too. They can cover almost any type of terrain and they can take a few hits from missiles of which no other normal vehicles could.

21

22

The Spinfisher V is built like a tank. It is built solid and sturdy. It doesnt bend under pressure. Even the fat stainless steel main shaft is built to remain in one sturdy shape and not bend. It also comes with tough alloy gears (main gear) that can take the heat of the fight. Keep pushing it and all you will be hearing is bring it on. Is that all youve got? Well of course everything has limits.

How Fast Does A Tank Go?

The Penn Spinfisher V is definitely not the fastest modern reel around but how fast can a tank really go? While no the fastest, it is also not the slowest. The Spinfisher V reels come with gear ratios from a low 4.2:1 to a speedier 6.2:1. The one that I have, the SSV7500, has a gear ratio of 4.7:1 with 36 inches per turn.

23

24

Super-Line Friendly
Super-line users will find the Spinfisher V to be a close companion. The weakest point of a fishing line is the knot and most anglers know that. This means that super-line users will have more knots on their lines since they need one to join the backup line (mono) to the mainline line (Super-line) and one to their leaders. We havent talked about the one at the hook yet. Arguably tape can be used as well. Anyhow, the Spinfisher V comes with a super-line friendly spool of which has a rubber grip in the middle of it for super-lines to hold and not slip.

25

26

What Do I Think
If David were to have another fight with the Giant, Goliath, his choice of weapon would no longer be the sling but the Penn Spinfisher V. It is a super strong reel that could quite effortlessly subdue a giant, and while Goliath is on the ground, used to keep him down. If you are going for seriously big game fishing and you want a value for money reel that is strong and tough, this is one reel that you should seriously consider bringing along. For all other less brutal types of fishing, this reel is definitely overkill.

Quantum EXO Spinning

By Philemon Foo
In November we test drove one of the hottest baitcasting reels around, the Quantum EXO PT baitcasting reel. This month we test drive the Quantum EXO PT spinning reel of which is hot, so hot that even Bumblebee, the yellow robot from Transformers couldnt resist but to give a hand.

Weightless Engineering
We love lightweight, we love really cool designs, we love strength, and we love good quality. These are whats left of the Quantum EXO PT spinning reel after the engineers removed all the unnecessary weights. There are so many holes on this reel that wind would probably just blow through them and that is a very good thing. While the Quantum EXO PT Spinning may not be the lightest spinning reel around, it is certainly garners a lot of attention.

Bumblebee has a new toy, the awesome Quantum EXO Spinning

33

34

Awesome Design
Design is something rather personal but I dare say that the Quantum EXP PT Spinning will turn every anglers heads. The designers of this reel probably came from another planet bringing with them an out of this world mind that created an out of this world design. Most reels in the market today look sporty. Some get design cues off sports cars, some off fighter jets, but the Quantum EXO PT Spinning got its cues from the future.

Simply awesome design. Every hole represents weight saving.

35

36

Designed For Strength

Another criterion that a lot of anglers look at is strength. How strong a reel is. Does it have the drag strength to handle their kind of fishing? Will it break under pressure? This reel certainly has enough drag strength to handle most types of fishing, with a max drag of about 15 to 16lb. In fact it will help you manage fights well and will take on almost any freshwater fishes found here in our lakes and river.

Bumblebee checking out some the shaft and bearing of the Quantum.

37

38

Well Engineered Reel Foot

The reel foot has a longer front and a shorter back. This is done in such a way that it will be able to better manage the frontal pressure when playing a big fish. Higher pressure is always at the front area of the reel foot. The reel stem is also sturdy giving it a strong foot and stem combination which is great. A weak stem causes flex and a wobbly reel, something that you wouldnt like to have when playing a fish. With the EXO PT, you dont have to worry about this.

Well design reel foot and stem shows that the engineers used a lot of pshysics in their designs. 39 40

Reverse Engineering
What most anglers look for in a spinning reel is a sturdy bail-arm that does not cave in and rubs against the spool while under pressure. Most reels these days come with a sturdy bail-arm and a tough, sturdy, and thick bail-arm wire, something that most reel engineers would design. This is not what the engineers for Quantum had in mind. Instead of making a tough, thick, and sturdy bail-arm wire, they have decided to go the other way. They created a bail-arm wire using Nickel-Titanium, and made it softer, bendable, and strong. This means that the bail-arm wire will absorb shock and not break.

A softer Nickel-Titanium bail-wire makes a lot of sense. Softer bail-wire absorbs impact thus it will be able to take more or higher impact before breaking. 41 42

Tough Spool
The spool of the Quantum EXO PT Spinning is tough and light weight and will not break or crush under pressure. It also comes with a reverse lip of which reduces friction and gives you further casting distances.

Unique Handle Design

While a lot of reels out there have adopted a smooth and rounded reel handle, the Quantum EXO PT Spinnings handle is more rugged, tough, with a superb design. It is also built tough with what Quantum calls the 6061 tempered aluminium. Another strong point of the handle is that it is designed to counterbalance the weight of the handle knob thus giving smoother handle rotations.

43

44

What Do I Think
Overall the Quantum EXO PT Spinning is a reel made to perform. There are a few spinning reels that I really like and this is one of them. Tough enough to handle most of my fishing (I landed a 8kg redtail catfish without much fuss), performs really well, and I just love the design. If Bumblebee likes it, I think everyone else will.

The Megabass X-55

By Philemon Foo

I admit that I do not use as much

hard plastic lures as I used to but my frequency of usage has since increased. Recently I took the Megabass X-55 minnow for a little swim. I didnt have much time with it but whatever time we had together, were great a fruitful.

Little Swimmer
I tested this lure at the Clearwater Sanctuary in Perak and I like it. I like it not only because it swims well. I like it also because it helped me catch a few fish during my trip.

51

52

Giving It Life
I cast out the little X-55 and it glided on air a while before landing in the water. I gave it a slight twitch and that started its engine and it came to life. Twitching the lure in the water gave it a darting swim action and that managed to attract the peacock basses. Twitch, twitch, twitch, and bam; followed by my rod tip bendAfter a short fight, a peacock bass came up to greet me. This is what people meant by having a good start to the day. It is not just cereals and fruits for a hearty breakfast (although they do too) but your lure being taken by a fish that equates to a good start of a day. The X-55 landed two peacock basses and the haruan on a steady retrieve, what better way to start the day?

53

54

My Thoughts
I will need to buy a few more of these. While they are great at catching fish, the Megabass X-55 is also light (2g-3.4g about there) and is best used with lighter lines and rods to get distance. With heavier lines you will not be getting much distance. This is a good lure for finesse fishing and I do recommend that you bring some on your fishing trips.

55

56

Knowledge Wise
Course Fishing With The Guvnor : Wagglers
By Tengku Izzudin Wagglers? Definitely not a common name in Malaysias fishing scene! But what in the world are they? I would put a simple definition of wagglers as fishing floats that are attached to the mainline through their eye at the bottom part only.

Wagglers are very common in coarse fishing and many anglers in England and Europe would have picked up this method from a very young age due to its simplicity and effectiveness. While many local anglers would use fishing floats as a means of suspending bait in mid-water, wagglers are more versatile in the sense that it not only presents bait in a more natural manner but it also serves as an excellent bite indicator.

57

58

Even small, subtle bites can be detected via a well presented and shotted float. Such sensitivity in bite detection are one of the main traits of the waggler. For example is an angler is bottom fishing in say 6 feet of water, 40 feet from the bank. A bite would have to travel 40.45 feet (Pythagoras!) to reach the anglers rod tip, while for the same condition a bite would only travel 6 feet to register on the float, provided you have keen eyesight that is!

A straight peacock waggler by Dave Harrell, a former England International.

59

60

The most basic waggler is the straight peacock waggler. Most wagglers are made from peacock quill which in my humble opinion is still the best natural material for wagglers. Although being a natural material, it might pose some subtle differences between one waggler to another of the same size and rating. But being cheap and good and readily available makes peacock quill a winner. Some thicker wagglers can be made from balsa or foam, and plastic is also a popular material, as one can have a clear, transparent waggler.

The insert waggler, notice the smaller tip to provide better bite sensitivity.

61

62

Wagglers do come in many other varieties such as inserts, loaded, bodied, sliders and splasher wagglers and they all have their place on certain water and fishing conditions. But for most conditions, anglers would still put their faith in the straight peacock waggler for either stillwaters or running waters.

Every waggler comes with a base rating as a guide to cock the float

63

64

The basic design has not changed much, the bottom where one would thread the line through is the eye, going upwards you have the body followed by the tip, which can be bright orange or yellow for better visibility. Sometimes to achieve distance or to suit a certain fishing style some variations such as a body or fins can come into play but well have to leave that for another day.

Many of the popular brand names such as Dick Cleggs, (Peter) Drennan, Serie (Tamas) Walter and more recently Dave Harrell are actually names of established anglers who designed them. These anglers are used to representing their country in angling matches and tournaments and they really know their stuff. Other manufacturers such as Middy, Image, Kamasan and Mosella are also well respected brands.

The eye at the bottom of the waggler where the mainline goes through.

The tip normally comes in either orange or yellow or even coloured black, the colour choice depends on best visibility given the water surface. 66

65

Wagglers and floats can be highly collectible too. We know of many anglers who collect beautiful or rare lures but there are also some anglers who are float enthusiasts as well.

If youre a technical angler then waggler fishing is definitely for you! I must admit it can be hard work (if you can call fishing work) but the rewards are there for the float angler who pays attention to all the details in this exciting and challenging method of fishing. Tight Lines!

family too and spend quality time with them and also do some fishing. A few hours ago, whilst driving to an appointment, I was listening to BFM 89.9 FM (radio station) and the subject was about balancing work and family life. The interviewee mentioned that we are a hard working lot. We spend a lot of time at the office and when we go back to our families, we still spend time working or checking something online. We spend some amount of quantity time but not much quality time.

Every month we suggest one resort where you can bring your

75

76

This also reminds me of how, as anglers, we do take our family for holidays but we end up fishing while they are left to do what they want. A family holiday is supposed to be spent together as a family and no one should be deprived on doing ones favourite activity like fishing, kite flying, swimming, etc. So this section is for you, the anglers.

Picture from an earlier trip. Fishing from the balcony is a lot of fun. Not as fruitful but relaxing and fun.

77

78

Anglers family Holiday Resort

The Clearwater Sanctuary Sri Damai Resort is one of my favourite holiday resorts. It has all of the things that a family, especially one with an angler, needs. It is design and built in such a way that it encompasses nature. There are a variety of birds like woodpeckers, kingfishers, and those that lives by the waters edge, as well as other animals like otters, squirrels, monkeys, boars, monitor lizards, etc.

Wildlife is in abundance here. I was fishing one morning and noticed this little fella hunting for food two balconies away from mine. 79 80

Last month, my family and I decided to take a slow drive there for a 4 days holiday. I had some lures and reels to test, and my daughter was on a month long holiday. I packed some fishing gear for my daughter and me, and we headed to Clearwater Sanctuary. Driving there took slightly above two hours (plus a few minutes stop in between) from Subang Jaya; using the North South Expressway, and exiting at Batu Gajah. The drive is easy and can be somewhat boring as most straight highways are but in no time, we were soaking in the Atmosphere at Clearwater Sanctuary.
Here is an arial view of the entire place. This map should give you an idea of how vast this place really is. Land with lakes: 1,063 acres (46,304 280 Square Feet) Lakes: 430 acres Resort: 21 acres

81

82

All Fun And Games

After settling down in our chalet, the first thing we did was to attack the swimming pool. Kids love swimming pools and my daughter is no different. My wife and I picked up our water-guns, my daughters floaters, and we headed for the pool.

Childrens pool area. The Adults pool is on the right, down the stairs.

83

84

The layout of the swimming pool is quite unique. There is the wading pool for small children, a dipping pool for adults to dip (not swim), there is the bubble pool (somewhat like a Jacuzzi), and then the actual swimming pool.

The adults pool

85

86

Kids Hangout
Near the swimming pool is the Childrens Centre. There are slides, and swings, and other stuffs that kids enjoy playing in there. The next day, after breakfast, my wife and daughter headed to the Childrens Centre. My daughter went nuts over the slide and this furry thing that looks like a bunny. I went to the fishing club for some casting and after about 20 minutes under the hot sun I headed back to the Children Centre, and the air-conditioning was a These two things were enough to keep my daughter entertained for the duration of our holiday (fishing as well). It was either the swimming pool or the children centre. My wife loved the gymnasium and that was her place of refuge in the evenings.

The childrens play center is airconditioned and provides a place for kids to hangout while their parents go do their own thing.

87

88

There are other activities as well of which I failed to interest my daughter and wife with. However, you could indulge in them should you decide to holiday there with your family. They have archery, 27 holes of golf, driving range, tennis, badminton, canoeing and kayaking, and cycling. You could also walk about the area and enjoy the wildlife.

Driving range to practise your swing.

89

90

So far I have seen otters, monitor lizards, various bird species, monkeys, wild boar, and different varieties of fish. This is also a great place for photographers to go about filling up their memory cards.

91

92

Cozy Fishing
When it comes to fishing in Clearwater Sanctuary, I normally arrange for a boat to fish either in the wetlands lake or the lake where the fishing club is. I have my secret little spot there and we have been catching a lot of peacock basses.

Just slide open those doors and you are in for some fishing good times.

93

94

But for the sake of this article, I decided not to use the boat and fish from the chalets balcony. Anyway, the whole idea is to spend more time with my family. The chalets (30 of them) are built on the waters edge with balconies sitting above the water

95

96

Our chalet, number 126, had one more advantage. The water beneath the balcony doesnt have much water plants allowing me to cast lures and play them confidently. The water plants were below the balcony. To the right and left of the balcony is where the plants are that allowed me to cast lures to as well (beside them).

View from our balcony. The structures you see are from the Anna & The King movie set. 97 98

The Captives
My daughter bottom fished with Gardenia bread while I cast lures. We didnt catch a whole lot of fish but a few sizable peacock basses were caught casting to the sides of the water plants, a juvenile striped snakehead (haruan), and one marble goby. My daughter caught two ikan sepats (gourami) at night, right below the balcony.

Fishing is quite productive from the balcony.

99

100

Gua Tempurung (Tempurung Cave),

About 30 minutes drive away from the resort is Gua Tempurung and we decided that a bit of adventure will do our daughter some good. We decided to go for the shortest cave exploration tour called Golden Flow guided walk.
101 102

Our guide has a very good knowledge about caves and there are creatures inside caves other then bats. Being an angler and one who is toying with the idea of cave fishing, I asked if there were fishes in that live inside the caves. Yes there are but not in Gua Tempurung although long time ago, before the cave was open to public, there were. There however, are crabs and shrimps living in the caves.

103

104

Things To Bring
Should you decide to bring your family for a holiday at Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort, here are some things that you may want to bring. Swimming attire (they are quite strict with this) Floaters, water toys, etc. Binoculars Rackets and balls (or shuttlecocks) for tennis or badminton Golf clubs if you intend to play a round of golf or just to hit some balls at the driving range Camera and lenses depending on your favourite type of photography Small container to keep baits such as kelkatu that can be used for fishing Sunscreen especially when indulging in outdoor activities

105

106

Recommended Fishing Tackle

Fishing rods: Light to medium weighted, casting or spinning. For lure casters, a light action rod will be plenty of fun. There are big fishes lurking about in the water such as carps thus a medium rod will be safe for bottom fishing. Reels: Spinning reels size 100 to 300. Casting: Low profile reels. Shallow spool reels will be enough. Lines: 10lb to 15lb braid or mono (if popping for tomans (giant snakehead) in the evening). For more excitement, go lower; 2lb to 6lb. Lures : Minnows, poppers, spoons, and spinners. Baits : shrimps, bait-fish, dough (boillies), etc. Types of fishing: Lure casting, bottom fishing, and pole fishing (float / waggler).

My little favourite secret spot is home to a large family of peacock bass. Best to keep it that way.

107

108

Misc Notes
The chalets are cosy but dated. The management is in the midst of repairing and refurbishing some of the chalets there. Also do call the resort in advance (on the day that you will be checking in) to let them know the time that you are expected to arrive and also get them to turn on the air-conditioning for you. The air-conditioning works but may need time to cool down the room especially on hot days.

Advanced Baitcasting Part II

By Philemon Foo

Skill Enhancers

Let us just take this scenario. Your

friend and you decided to go do some fishing in a lake. The sun is hot and the both of you decided to take shelter under a tree with branches about a foot above your heads. You are seated at the bow (front) of the 8 feet long boat and your friend is hanging out at the stern (back). Suddenly you see the rise of a toman (giant snakehead), and you want to cast but your friend is on your left, you cannot do a overhead cast because of the branches, and your only empty space is on your right of which is where your casting hand is. What would you do? Simple, you do a side cast. But is it really so?

115

116

Opportunity Cost
I have been in this same situation before but with me at the stern. Some of those seated at the bow just decided not to cast and you can see that it is not because they do not want to cast. They found themselves to be in a tight spot where they would like to cast but the only space available to do a cast is one that they do not know how to utilize.

Casting From The Side

If you are in this very same situation, all you need to do is to learn how to perform a side cast, and practise thereafter to get better at it, and you will be able to at least have give yourself the chance of catching the fish.

117

118

The Mechanics Of The Side Cast

Side cast simply means casting from the side of your hand that is holding the rod. If you are holding the rod with your right hand, the side cast will be performed on the right. If you are holding the rod with your left hand, the side cast will then be on your left. Note that for this lesson, I will assume that you are holding the rod with your right hand. Bring the rod tip to the back and whip it back to the front. The tip will shoot the lure out in front of you towards your intended target.

119

120

Imagine that you are hitting a shuttlecock. This is somewhat the movement of your wrist and arm. With your rod tip pointing to 10 oclock (sideways), bring the rod tip towards the back and then whip out the plug using the rod tip to execute the cast, the same way you would with a badminton racket, and follow through with your right arm.

121

122

Your first few casts may have your casting plug flying to your left (if you are casting with your right hand). It is normal. You need to adjust your cast. If it flies to the left, you are letting go of the spool too late. If it goes to the right, then you are releasing the line too early. You want the plug to fly straight in front of you.

123

124

Reel in your casting plug and try again. Practise these few steps over and over again until it becomes second nature to you. As you get better, slowly loosen the spool and brakes to achieve better distance. Give it a try and if you are still unable to do so, send me an email at... email: phil@theasianangler.com and I will see how best to help you. Remember, practise, practise, practise.

Sporting Fishes

Sebarau: Hampala macrolepidota

By Philemon Foo

127

128

The Sebarau is one of my favourite

fishes. If you like speed, the sebarau will give you a run for your money. In the world of car enthusiast, the sebarau would be the Ferrari; collecting speeding tickets, and breaking hearts.

Sebarau also known as the Malaysian jungle perch (or jungle perch of whichever country they are found in) is native to many countries in Asia including Thailand and Malaysia. They can be found in rivers and lakes. They are an aggressive fish making them ideal freshwater sport fishes. Given the chance, sebaraus can grow in excess of 10 kilograms but the average sizes caught these days are from 500 grams to about 2 kilograms. There are larger specimens but they are rare this days.

Sebarau caught at The Royal Belum Forest Reserve.

129

130

Palate
The sebaraus are carnivores. They love meat and would happily chase down bait fishes and insects for a meal. I have caught them on dough before but it doesnt happen frequently. Perhaps every fish whether carnivorous or not will take vegetables once in a while, maybe to relief a constipated tummy.

Socialites
If sebaraus were humans, they would be living in pubs and clubs. Just like us humans who seem to not have enough of Facebook (although I am getting there), sebaraus have this need to socialize. They like hanging together. They are also victims to peer pressure. Catch one in a spot and you will be catching another soon. It is like wow, he caught one of those silver things and I want one too.

Freshwater Warriors
Sebaraus are hard fighters and will readily put you to the test. They have very powerful jaws that can easily crush hooks or straighten them. As such it is best not to use treble hooks as the design of such hooks makes it a disadvantage when fishing for sebarau.

Looking For A Fight

Fishing the sebaraus can certainly be quite an adventure. You can fish them in jungle rivers of which is one of my favourite places to fish simply because I love cool jungle streams and rivers. You can also fish them in lakes. Just look out for fallen trees and rocks of which the sebaraus call home.
131 132

Luring The Sebaraus

My favourite lure for sebaraus is actually the silver Abu Island spoons, of which is also called the curse to the sebarau. I prefer to use the 18g spoon. The technique is really quite simple. Just cast into the snags, allow the spoon to drop to the bottom and reel in fast. The faster the better. As such a high speed reel is best. Sebaraus take lures too. Surface lures during a feeding frenzy and divers for those at the bottom. Again your lures will have to swim fast and tight as sebaraus love chasing and if you stop half way, they will most likely stop and turn back. They also take soft plastics especially those such as minnows and crawfish. However, the lures of choice are still spoons and lures.

133

134

Fishing Seasons
Sebaraus can be caught throughout the year but the best times to fish for them is during the rainy season especially the monsoon, when water levels rise. Sebaraus are more aggressive early in the mornings and in the evenings. They prefer shaded areas.

Recommended Tackle
Rods: Medium action casting or spinning rod. For the extreme angler a medium light action rod will be fun and definitely a challenge. Reels Spinning: Sizes 100 to 200 will be good enough. Reels Baitcasting : Low profile, preferably high speed. Lines: 10lb to 15lb braided (monofilaments can be used too but I prefer braids). Leader Lines: 20lb to 25lb fluorocarbon. Spoons : Various types, silver and copper spoons the likes of the Abu Island seems to be the most effective. Lures : Crankbaits and minnows. Flies: I have seen sebaraus take flies but I have not caught one on fly before.
Enjoying the coolness of the jungle while on a hunt.

Fishy Tales
Of Long Rods, Wagglers, & An Englishman
By Philemon Foo

Steve Lockett at play with a stubborn fish. 137 138

It has been quite some time since

I did any form of fishing with a float or a waggler on my fishing line. Ever since I started putting more time into fooling fishes with hard and soft plastics; my floats, wagglers, and also some of the stuffs that I have kept for making them, have gone into hiding somewhere in my brain.

Revisiting An Old Game

Recently a close friend of mine (Tengku Izzudin, fondly known as Guvnor) invited me to go do some fishing. He had a friend who is a competitive angler and owner of an e-magazine in the United Kingdom, visit him and has plans to go wet some lines, doing float fishing. When I talk about floats I do not mean those round red and white plastic balls or the colourful foam torpedo shaped things but long stick like things with indicators that unless you have an eye that is almost as good as an eagles, you had better be bringing along a pair of binoculars.

139

140

One of the reasons that I have decided to keep my wagglers (type of float) at home and play with lures is because my eyesight is only better than that of a bat, of which is a far cry from that of an eagles. Furthermore I have surpassed enlightenment so many times that I feel like I am on clouds daily. Try watching the tip of the float in water for a couple of hours and soon you will feel high as if you are floating on air; all done without drugs or alcohol.

Floats On The Water

If Roger Glover (Deep Purple bass guitarist) were to be an angler, I am not sure if he was or not, this would have been the title of their song instead of Smoke On The Water. It would have probably gone like, floats on the water, fishes swimming by. Anyway, I met up with Guvnor and was introduced to Steve Lockett early one morning at Fish Valley, Semenyih. Having worked through the night with very little sleep, I wasnt in the mood to fish. I decided then to just sit back and observe Steve in action. Along with us were another two friends, one of which was in an informal competition with Steve, without his knowledge.

141

142

Two Different Games

While Guvnor prepared his pole, Steve prepped up his 12 foot long match / float fishing rod by Greys, and 6lb lines, snugly coiled in his Daiwa reel. For those who have not done match fishing before, it is unlike normal bottom fishing. The setting up itself takes some time. Then there is the measurement of the area that you intend to fish which includes depth of the areas around your fishing zone. You will also have to decide to whether you intend to fish right at the bottom at different depth levels. After that you will need to set the depth of the float / waggler with the use of split shots. There are also different methods of rigging. Thus if you want finesse fishing, this would be finesse float fishing. It is really exciting and definitely addictive. I almost had to enrol myself with the Match Fishing Anonymous, if such a group existed. For those who have no idea what that is, it is like the Alcoholics Anonymous that some people with drinking problems go to. How bad is it? Well, I could feel my hands shaking when they were rigging up.

143

144

Fish And More Fish

Using corn as bait and feeding about every minute or two, Steve was on a roll. He would watch the tip of his float and with the slightest movement (of the tip) he would strike and reel in a fish. Lampams (Puntius schwanenfeldii) were introducing themselves one by one. I blame this on peer pressure. It is like, hey! If he can do it, I can do it too. Thus, if he can fly out of water, visit land, and return, so can I, and that is what happened that day. The lampams were not the only ones who paid a visit, a few good size carps made it to land as well of which gave Steve some thrill, but nothing could beat the stubborn catfish that wouldnt surrender. Steve took more than twenty five minutes to subdue the catfish. It just went on and on, and when it stopped, Steve had to slowly take in line worried that his 6lb line would snap.

145

146

After a while the catfish would give another run and Steve couldnt do much but to just hold on and hope that the fish would swim towards us. Eventually it did, and into the net it went like a baby ready to take a nap.

147

148

Should I Rekindle This Old Flame?

I am thinking if I should start fishing this way again. I will have to get myself a new rod, make new wagglers, and do a bit of shopping. I will again have to explain to people why I am buying bright coloured nail polish and enamel. Making your own tools is part of the fun. Perhaps I will, but right now I have this urge to rewrite the lyrics of one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite British bands and hopefully someone will read it, put music to it, sing it, and together we can dedicate it to all anglers. Till then, fish and have fun fishing.

149

150

A Knot A Month
Sponsored by Penn Fishing Tying good knots is one of the most important things that any angler must learn. Certain knots should not be used on braided lines as braided lines are known to cut or damage themselves. Certain types of fishing requires thicker lines and yet smaller knots. There are knots for connecting lines to lines. There are knots for connecting lines to hooks. There are knots connecting lines to spool. There are knots everywhere in fishing. While there are many knots that you could use, you will probably stick to your favourites. Anyway, it is good to learn all of them. For this issue we will show you one of the simpler but effective knots, the Palomar Knot.

An Initiative By Penn

The Berkley Braid Knot

The Berkley braid knot is a good choice for tying braided lines to hooks, lures and leaders. It was developed in the Berkley lab to retain good knot strength and stops braided lines from slipping out of the knot. 1.Run a double loop of braid through hook eye or lure. 2.Loop around tag end main line 8 times. 3.Thread double loop back between the eye and coils. 4.Tighten knot and trim double loop and tag end of braided line leaving about .

Fishin-Tech

Real Fishing
By Philemon Foo

In this months FishinTech, we bring you one of my favourite

mobile games that have been pulling me away from work and sleep. It gets more and more addictive as you go along and that is what makes a game great.

Real fishing 3D, by PNJ, works iPhone, iPod touch and iPad requiring iOS 4.1 or later. It also works on Android devices.

In Game Experience
Well, Real Fishing 3D doesnt give you the actual angling experience not does it get close to it. Like all games it works on some form of a program and not many programs succeed at giving a real life fishing experience in a game.

153

154

However, it is fun and engaging. There are a few levels for you to achieve. You will begin as a Rookie and make your way up the ranks until you achieve the rank, Master. Every time you catch something you earn some money, you gain experience points, and you progress further. The further you progress the more variety of fishes you will be playing. Some are easier to land while other take a whole lot of finger power.

155

156

Tools For Your Journey

Your journey to Master Ranker can only be achieved with the upgrading of your fishing tools and they include fishing rods, lines, lures, and fish storage tank. You will also get to fish in different areas with each area giving you the opportunity to experience difference fishes.

157

158

What keeps people like me playing is the desire to see what new fishes will be taking the lure that was cast. Sometimes it gets frustrating as you lose a lure (same as real world fishing) and that lure cost a lot of money. But it is all in the name of fun.

159

160

Making More Money

To make more money so that you can buy more equipment (sounds so real ay?), you will have to go after better graded fish and play something called Quest. Since fish keeping space is limited it is best to Catch and Release lower grade fishes that pay you less but take the same amounts of space. Doing Quest on the other hand earns you a few extra coins and dollar notes. How much depends on the grade of the fish.

161

162

Each time you land a record size fish you earn a dollar. Record size fish means that the fish is bigger than the biggest one of the same species, which you caught earlier.

163

164

Deterioration Of Equipment
Take note that your equipment will go through wear and tear. It will cost money to repair them. This is too is somewhat funny. Your lines will wear off and you can have them repaired. You rods loses its strength as well as its ability to cast and they need to be repaired.

165

166

Selling of Used Tackle

You also have the option of selling away tackle that you have used. This will help you get back some money from the purchases that you have made. Here is a tip, ensure that you repair your tackle before you sell them. Selling a non repaired tackle will gained you very little.

167

168

Fishing Places
Different fishing areas come with different difficulty levels and fish species. You will also have to purchase a boat ticket to fish in most of them except for Sunny Beach. Below are the different places and levels. Level 1: Sunny Beach, free. Level 2: Around The Lighthouse, Sea Boat Ticket needed. Level 3: Twin Rocky Island, Sea Boat Ticket needed. Level 4: Marian Trench, Mariana Speedship (luxury boat ticket) needed. Level 5: Drift Ice Sea, Ice Breaker Ticket needed. * I am not sure if there are more as I am playing the free version. Well, why dont you go download the free version and give it a go and have some fun with it. If you like it, you can then proceed to buy it.
