FOREWORD
Only when a person is able to face and take up the pain and sorrow of another as his own, we prove our self as a responsible human being. 65 years since gaining independence, India still has features of poverty, disease, biased levels in its society and lack of equal opportunities. Only if the Government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other social organisations work together can a country like India have a respite from these fundamental problems facing this country. The mission of an NGO is to take up the responsibility of what the Government may not do and what they cannot do. Rehab India Foundation is a NGO formed 5 years ago, with its headquarters in Delhi. It was born by extensively travelling through the villages the heart of India in the north and north-east and by watching the hunger, diseases and illiteracy in the villages which had no colour or race discrimination and to eradicate such sorrow and pain. Rehab was motivated by the words of God, if anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind. That is how we started Rehab Model Village in Assam. As protection for the women who are compelled to give up their chastity due to their miserable life in poverty, Rehab has started Padosi Self-Help Group (SHG) Programme in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. The real villages in India have become a symbol of the complete helplessness of the people of India and of the disregard of the ruling establishment. Village Development Programme is a project to change their mindset and then to change their lives by using their own resources to the maximum. Rehab adopted a methodology of inculcating a Can do attitude in villagers. By the grace of God, the shine on their faces in adopted villages are proving that we are succeeding. It is proposed that each adopted village should become a self sustainable society at the end of fifth year. The alert team of rehab is pursuing this goal in these villages. Rehabs style is to take up micro level projects instead of macro projects and programmes. Its about smaller clinics touching each village instead of big super speciality hospitals; The approach of giving priority to primary schools instead of engineering or medical colleges. Rehabs activities impact in three distinct ways in the people. First it builds self confidence in them. The willingness to fulfil own obligations and the will power to obtain their rights from the government is being nurtured. Secondly, it creates the feeling of sharing the pain and sorrow of the people living far away like their own in philanthropic individuals. They thereby include in the prayers of rehab team and scores of the beneficiaries of rehab projects. Thirdly, our efforts in this field increases the vigour of other NGOs working in similar area. We are happy to see more and more agencies coming up to build model villages in Assam. India lives in 120 crore people dwelling in 6.5 lakh villages and 8,000 cities across the subcontinent. With respect to this figure, the work which Rehab does might be negligible, however the attitude of even if not enough, whatever possible is a great one. On that midnight when India rose to freedom while the world was fast asleep Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru addressed India, The service of India means the service of the millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty, and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunities. Rehab is going ahead. Our mission will not end unless hunger, diseases and illiteracy end to exist which do not have a race or religion. With Gods grace and your cooperation we will accomplish our mission. E Abubacker Chairman

THE PIPELINE OF LIFE

together we can change lives

Changing Lives

As an exercise we asked few children from one of the villages to draw their dream. Most of them drew about, a happy life in the villages. Just like any other child anywhere else, they have every right to dream, and they have the right to expect help to realise their fundamentals

With Rehab India Foundation, together lets make their dream come true.
To teach them to read, write and give them the basis for higher education Provide them the basic health care They should also have means for eating food, drink clean water and breathe unpolluted air. Give them opportunities in life to excel themselves like any other person.

Be Part of the Change

Select field experiences from the Project Managers Sajid Project Manager North Zone Gourhar, is one of the villages in Uttar Pradesh where adolescent girls are refrained from attending schools. Even that school is 13 km away from the village. We desperately needed a female teacher and hence scheduled an interview. To my surprise the teachers husband appeared for the interview. He said that his wife is standing behind the wall and he will pass the questions to her! As of today, our Educare Centre now has 3 female teachers, and they regularly attend our Teachers Training Programme, Teachers Meetings, etc. They teach 246 students of which half of them are girls. Insafudheen Project Manager South Zone We met Yemignur Mandal Education Officer, Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh to get permission for conducting Fear Free Exam Programme and also submitted our training modules to him. After seeing our training module he requested us to conduct the same programme in all schools under his jurisdiction. I met a Public Health Officer from Adoni urban Kurnool District in Andhra Pradesh to build rapport with health officers and to get permission for conducting a medical camp. She denied our request demanding us to submit many documents, after which I approached the Municipal Commissioner who allowed the same. Moreover, he sent his assistant to evaluate our programme and since then offered all his support for all our initiatives. Nishad Project Manager East Zone When I was first in Hajipara Village to introduce Self Help Group (SHG) Programme they were showing resistance to open bank account. On enquiry, I came to know that Masjid Imam declared a Fatwa against opening a bank account or having any dealings related to bank. Our team worked hard to overcome the barrier and finally we have applied for a Bank account with the permission of villagers including the Imam. Saravanakumar Central and Assam Project Manager We conducted an Adolescent Girl Group meeting in Rehab Model Village, Assam. Initially, they were very shy & hesitant to introduce themselves. It was the first-of-its-kind meeting in the whole of Hapasara Grama Panchayat. This meeting was basically to know their education ambition, interest & hobbies and to form a regularly meeting group. These girls expected that we would teach some handicraft work. Even though English was a part of the subject in school, they were unable to speak even the basic words. Towards the end of the meeting they had given me an assurance that they will speak with me in English the next time we conduct a meeting with them. At the end of the meeting, they were happy & said, Thank You in English.

From Rehabs Program Management Office

It gives me great satisfaction to state that we ended last year with a lot of new initiatives in our Village Development Programme (VDP), and set new milestones for Rehab India Foundation in the socio-work arena. We started delivering tuition programs in a more structured way. We designed the tuition programs at different levels L1 (1st to 4th), L2 (5th to 8th) and L3 (8th to 12th). We introduced the Teachers Training Programme to enhance the teaching skills of all our teachers. We are happy to say that students from Rehab villages have been well recognised and appreciated by the nearby schools. As we move ahead with a goal of drop out prevention strategies, we see a lot of positive vibes in parents to send every child to school. Many of our villages have 100% school going students as a result of Rehab efforts. In this year we have initiated Self Help Group (SHG) in all Rehab villages. We are making significant progress in availing government benefits in our economic development programmes. We strongly believe in the caption prevention is better than cure. Our healthcare initiatives are designed to bring awareness in people about good health. Many campaigns were conducted about hygiene and health basics. In addition to our monthly medical check ups we partnered with hospitals and health centres to avail free medical treatment to the most needed people across each village. We have introduced unique programs like job oriented trainings, family counseling, career guidance, cultural programs, school enrollment fest, exam motivation and leadership trainings within our Village Development Programme. Furthermore, our MSW scholarship program is very unique in its modus operandi. It gives students the benefit of managing real time projects while they study the entire 2-year course. Our MSW students are from the nearby places of Rehab villages. We look forward to your continued support. Remiz Muhammed Program Manager, Rehab India Foundation

FielD notes

Hajjipara-Before VDP
Few years back when we visited Hajipara Village, we observed all elements of a tragedy. A tale of poverty, illiteracy, neglect, natures fury and official Indias apathy towards the downtrodden and unsung people of this village. We analysed that these poor people were unable to maintain a minimum socially accepted level of standard of living. And, due to neglection, it is kicked off to consume benefit of government schemes. For daily expenses, they are completely dependent on agriculture. Either they are owner of small piece of land or working as a labour under land lords. In short, whatever they earned was not sufficient to full fill their basic need. Quality education or education at all was a dream for the children and youth who liked to study. We can say major chunk was ignorant and one of the major reasons was poverty and hunger. Somehow, it is justified because we cant expect a starving person to indulge in intellectual discourse on the importance of education. We needed patience for long term output and people needed instant solution to put something in their stomach. When we met one of the poor ladies of the Village. She said, Kya karenge parah kar. Chalo parah bhi liya to kya Gaon ki parai shahar ki parai ka mukabala kar payegi. So we realized that people understand the disparity of education in the villages thats why they preferred skill development training programme than education for their kids. After poverty, illiteracy and ignorance, next most shocking indicator was health and sanitation. In this modern era, still people go to the open places for lavatory. Hospital is far away from the village, if anybody dared to go then they fail to reach back in time due to bad transportation.

SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF VDP-HAJJIPARA

17

Hajjipara-After VDP
Observing such a vulnerable situation, Rehab India Foundation planned to initiate Village Development Programme in Hajipara village which has never tasted the recipe of development and has not been in the mainstream of development. Under VDP, our main aim was to promote employment oriented programmes, education and improved healthcare for all. At Hajipara, we started with a community Centre made up of husk and bamboo.

The team also organised enrollment fest to publicise the tuition class at the Rehab Educare centre. Under this programme, we distributed notices among the villagers and organised house campaigns. Also we arranged parents meet intermittently to light the lamp of education.

Economic Development : As agriculture is the only source of income in the village, we established a farmers club, contacted resource person and applied for bank accounts for members of farmers club. The team formed a female club for their direct involvement in developing their village. Apart from this, we organised thrift and saving Programme for household women. Now fifty women are members of this group and actively participate in allocation of fund. Healthcare : To improve the health level of poor people, Rehab organised medical camp. Every month, we organise two medical camps and facilitate consultation, check-up and medicine to the villagers.

18

SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF VDP-HAJJIPARA

Educare Centre ; We then introduced a tuition centre at the Rehab community centre and appointed teachers for providing free tuition classes to school going and drop-out children. Currently, 91 children are part of this tuition centre. Our aim is to provide quality education to the school going students and facilitate bridge course to drop outs and enroll them in government schools.

To prepare students for advanced professional practice in an area of concentration in a way that fosters social work leadership, effective social interventions, a commitment to a just and diverse society, and a commitment to public service. The MSW Scholarship Programme was initiated in the month of August 2012 with the objective to empower and build the capacity of MSW students by giving Scholarships, exposure

MASTER of SOCIAL Work (MSW) Programme

visits and more practical and professional knowledge of the subject. For the programme, initially six students were shortlisted, later two more students joined the programme. Altogether, eight students have been getting benefits of the programme. Every month students have eight days coaching classes; IGNOU contact classes, internal academic classes, spoken English and skill development training, field visit, observational visits, discussions, and assignments.

Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy, it is my great pleasure to introduce MSW Scholarship Programme organised by Rehab India Foundation. The programme was conducted to train MSW Students and to improve their performance at a real and measurable way. Drinking Water Project

It has been proved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF that India is home to 97 million people without an access to improved water supplies. Over all, there are still 780 million people without access to a proper drinking water source. According to the Rehab survey in Murshidabad and Bhirum Districts of West Bengal, access to drinking water is one major challenge for the poor. Daily, women had to walk for miles to fetch water for their family. Rehab decided to address this problem with the installation of hand pumps. In the first phase, it has installed 15 bore wells with hand pumps in Murshidabad and Bhibum Districts, West Bengal. Altogether, 3355 people benefitted from the programme.

It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

If the several social forces which ultimately bring about radical changes or transformation among the backward people, the female education is by far the most important one. No nation can progress; no human group can advance without the female education. Female education is the major vehicle through which the generation-to-generation poverty cycle can be broken. Female education has a tremendous impact on the family especially on children. Female education has a great influence on the status of women and their participation in various activities. The more a society is literate and educationally forward, the more the status of its females and less their participation in hard and manual activities. In a rural society illiterate womenfolk are involved in each and every activity which requires hard labour. Sometimes they perform even those activities which are not medically advisable for ladies. They do this because they have to support their families. In the current developing society and when inflation is increasing, there is a race for the acquisition of goods so as to lead a better level of living in the society. This tendency is more common in urban areas than rural. Today women take up jobs outside their homes to augment family resources. Education and economic independence is creating an atmosphere of self confidence among women. Today, womens contribution can be seen in the promotion of economic development in different capacities, namely housewife, mother, labourer, scientist, etc. Women contribute in the nations overall production by their work in fields and factories. The status of women is intimately connected with their economic position which depends on opportunities for participation in economic activities. The educational and economic status of women is an indicator of social development. Observing the importance of education for woman development and reform, Rehab India Foundation initiated Educare Centres for poor children especially female children and adults. I am delighted to share that presently we are running twenty-one Educare Centres across India promoting and achieving Goal two of UN Millennium Development in the poorest areas of the country. During and After Crisis in Assam

Our crying infants, screaming children, half nude girls hiding themselves at the back of their men, disappointed faces, huge crowd outside toilet, this was the inside picture of Chirang refugee camp when we visited in July. For few minutes, I lost my control and wondered how people can be inhuman at this level. Why people forget that we may have different religion, language or even belong to different nation but we all belong to one human race which is supposed to be superior from other creatures on earth. In 2012 and from last few years, lakhs people met with their fate due to the over flowing Brahmaputra and pre-planned attack by some extremists in the name of cleaning of Bangladeshi infiltrators. With the aim to provide relief to these innocent people, we launched a package of multifaceted activities including Assam riot relief programme, Flood relief programme, Model village, Food kits distribution and advocacy programme. Assam Relief Programme started on an emergency basis, and distributed baby food packets, polythene bags, mosquito nets, candles, buckets, mugs, clothes, utensils and other necessary items in the refugee camps of Chirang, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Bongaigaon. About 1000 kg flattened rice, sugar and other necessary food materials were distributed in flood affected villages of Assam. Legal awareness programmes were organised frequently for flood affected and riot hit victims so that they can legally claim for their loss. Rehab Model Village initiated with a vision to ensure that every one of these victims should have a home, access to education, pure drinking water, medical support and employment opportunity. With the grace of God, we have built 60 houses and among them 45 have been distributed. Achieving UN MDG Goal 2, we are running pre-primary school and also facilitating free tuition classes to students and drop outs. On need basis, Rehab released scholarships for the students who like to study and organised weekly and bi-monthly medical camps for reducing maternal mortality and infant mortality. Our doctors counseled women for reproductive child health, neo natal care and general and personal hygiene. Moving forward from charity to empowerment, team formed three Self Help Groups; one man SHG and two women SHGs. From next month, we will release loan for their proposed proposals such as rearing of goat, buffalo, papad making, marketing food items and clothes etc. Apart from this, 7773 food packets were distributed among the families who have been temporarily rehabilitated at Government Refugee Camps. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all our stakeholders for their overwhelming support for achieving the goal of Assam Relief Project, aiming to empower innocents made victims of ethnic cleaning and natural calamity irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
