PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

HELP SERIOUSLY ILL KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES

1. DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Neuromuscular disorders include approximately 60 separate disorders that have in common the progressive and irreversible wasting of muscle tissue. Each year in Australia, 1 in 1000 children are born with an inherited neuromuscular condition. These children are destined to a life of difficulty, often shortened by complications as a result of their weak muscles. The most common inherited neuromuscular disorder is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), which affects 1 in 3500 boys. DMD results in a progressive degeneration of the muscles of the limbs, diaphragm and heart, with boys losing the ability to perform the simplest of functions, such as scratching their noses, by their mid teens. Boys with DMD typically die in their early 20s from respiratory failure, as the muscles of breathing are no longer able to function. There is no cure for DMD and the many other forms of Muscular Dystrophy. We can, however, offer families treatment and hope for the future. All we need is your support.

2. WHAT IS THE TOUR DUCHENNE?

The Tour Duchenne was first held in 2009 and is the brain child of Julian Thompson. Julian and Sharyn Thompson heard the terrible news of their boy James, the inspiration of The Tour Duchenne having Duchenne MD on Fathers Day 2007. It was whilst training for another charity event held offshore that Julian thought that he should do something in Australia to raise more awareness and much needed funds for the fight to find a cure for his son and the other kids and families who are fighting this disease every day. And so, the Tour Duchenne Million Dollar Challenge was born. Like the name suggests our aim is to raise over $1 million for the fight of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. To help support the Duchenne community with services, facilities, care and respite needs and to help find a cure for one of the most insidious diseases that affects mainly boys early in their lives. At present, there is no cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A devastating, progressive muscle-destroying disorder, it confines kids to an electric wheelchair prematurely and significantly reduces their life expectancy. Whilst we continue our fight for a cure, many kids and families need assistance in their lives with wheelchairs, breathing machines, house and car modifications and many other services. The next Tour Duchenne event will take place in March 2014 and will see 50 cyclists travel over 1,152 grueling kilometres in 8 days from Adelaide to Melbourne.

Community Celebrations We engage the local communities as we travel through inviting them to a number of community celebration events. This provides the local community the opportunity to meet the team and support the cause by participating in auctions and raffles on the night. These are actively promoted in the local communities in the lead up to the event and will provide you with an opportunity to engage them. School Visits The school visits are a real highlight for all involved. We will visit at least 3 primary schools on the ride and speak to the kids, teachers and parents about DMD and ride safety. The visit is promoted within the school in the weeks leading up to our visit as the kids participate in a colouring in competition to win great prizes as provided by our wonderful sponsors. A perfect way to connect to the local community.
