Re: Chinese J-20 5th Generation Fighter Jet

Regarding intake shapes, The nose & straight intakes like in Mig-21 & Mig-29 etc is best design so far. next comes chin intake, next comes Y shaped side intakes. Y shape is a compromise of nose and straight intake. If you keep the angle of Y less than 12*, you get nearly same perf as a nose intake. it helps to give you a big space for radar and also masks the engine. DSI is a form of split side Y-shape intake wherein the BL is made to flow out of the inlet funnel by use of a bump. Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) compared to a conventional intake can reduce the weight and weight is the primary driver to reduce cost and increase performance of a fighter aircraft. An intake with a bump has higher pressure recovery than an intake without a bump. For subsonic speed the difference is negligible and for high supersonic speed the difference is about 2%. The big difference is for transonic and low supersonic speed, where the difference is about 6%. A variable DSI is better and less complicated than cone or diverter plate intake. The problem with DSI is that as you approach M1.6, the shock wave due to bump moves further inwards of the inlet and so the shockwave generated by fwd swept plate of the cowl lips is not able to intersect it to turn it into subsonic flow. This causes shock separation. Providing a movable plate behind this fwd swept fixed plate which extends towards the fuselage will overcome this problem and allow this shockwave to be intersect the shockwave created by the bump and slow it down to subsonic flow at any mach number.

The results show that under design point condition, the average total pressure recovery coefficient at exit of bump inlet is nearly 0.87 at design Mach number of 2.0,and no less than 0.91 at mach number of 1.8Research of Bump Inlet(DSI) Model Design and Its Aerodynamic Properties--?Journal of Aerospace Power?2005?05?

Here you can easily see there is nothing special about DSI except you get cheaper stealth

So it is easy that if you want better pressure recovery you need variable geometry

You need bleed doors to control pressure recover since air mass will spill.
