TOOL KIT FOR TEACHING READING The reading class must be a significant part of the school day, and

teachers should seek ways to integrate reading instruction into other areas of the curriculum. Given the frequency of significant reading difficulties among these students, additional practice to maintain and refine basic skills is warranted. On this chapter the approaches discussed here provide a foundation for a reading program. Specific topics include; principles for effective reading, comprehension skills, non-fiction, the media, poetry and prose. It also includes the recommendation for reading activities and resources. A.PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE READING 1. Reading for pleasure- challenging apathy and disinterest. By promoting reading for pleasure, we are not only encouraging students to improve their literacy appreciation, but are enhancing their changes of success in English, across other school subjects and in the future. Providing recommended reading list to parents can be an effective way of promoting reading at home. Reading challenge schemes such as the Readathon can add sense of purpose and competition. Set interesting homework that involves independent reading task to give students an incentive. Developing students as critics. Building in opportunities for students to appreciate the craft of writing and share their opinions about the texts that they have read can help them to become judicious reader. It is worth including discriminatory debate about text so that students come to realize that it is OK to have preferences; just because they havent enjoyed certain texts in the past, doesnt mean they will find unenjoyable. Introducing a range of texts Extract-based work has its place in English lesson and can be good way of introducing students to a wide range of different styles, authors and genres. If the students dont have access to reading materials at home, a class novel may be the only chance they got to read one from cover to cover. It is also important to stress to students that all reading is good reading while teachers and parents tend to favour classic novels in place of fashion, magazine, skateboard, websites or can manually releuctant readers should be encouraged to read anything and everything that they are interested in. Building up students analytical skills A key skill in English is to be able to engage with a text beyond simply being able to read for meaning. If students are going to be able to deduce, infer and analyse the intricacies of texts, this is a skill that should be developed throughout their school career. Comprehension activities have become limited in the English curriculum reading schemes are dominated by written responses that encourage students to write in role shifts to their writing skills rather than the quality of their reading.
