Squares
Cleverness. E q u a l i t y. Fu n c t i o n a l i t y.
All possible layout compositions go back to a simple geometric figure: the square. The four-sided figure as the elementary visual component within the corporate design of DG Agriculture was selected for the following reasons: All sides of a square are equal, and all squares within our CD are equal in terms of size. This stands for the equality of the different members of the European Union. Additionally, the differently saturated brown squares symbolize the various sectors of agricultural work throughout Europe seen from above. The main advantage of the square fields is their great flexibility and functionality. The quadrangle fields can transport both colours and pictures, and they stand for highly intelligent solutions, since they also resemble a chessboard.

Diagonal Squares
The diagonal use of two squares of one theme colour but with different saturation percentages on cover layouts supports the identification of one-topic publications (e.g. on olive production in the EU). This arrangement helps to establish a secondary colour code throughout all publications.

Page Numbers
Page numbers are placed in little quadrats at the bottom of the page. For one-digit and two-digit numbers three quadrats are used. The page number is then located in the middle quadrat. For three and more digit page numbers four quadrats are used. The page number in this case is situated in the two quadrats in the middle. 18
