2470 District
otary International District 2470 comprises the Rotary clubs of southern Greece. The 68 Rotary clubs and 1550 Rotarians of the district keep up the Rotary history on the Balkan peninsula. Rotary was expanded to Greece when RC of Athens was organized on December 27, 1928. The first Rotary club of the Balkans was organized in Athens with 24 charter members. In 1960, when Greek Rotarians amounted to 1000, which was required for a separate Rotary district, the Greek Rotary clubs formed the first Greek Rotary district. On July 1, 1992, due to the increase in Rotary clubs and Rotarians, the creation of a second district was approved. So, 2470 comprises the geographical area of southern Greece and 2480 the geographical area of northern Greece, Bulgaria, Servia and FYROM. On July 1, 2007 RID 2480 was divided into 2481, which comprised northern Greece, Servia, Montenegro and FYROM, and 2482, which comprised only Bulgaria. From July 1, 2012 after a further increase of members and Rotary clubs, a new district was formed, the second purely Greek district, RID 2484. Doing Good in the World: This is the motto and the thought that guide the activities of all the Rotarians in 2470 district. Greek Rotarians have been committed to performing a rich and wonderful service work both in Greece and abroad. Volunteer groups have visited countries

in Africa and Asia to offer their services (mostly medical) and donate medical equipment. In the last few years the economic situation in Greece has changed dramatically. This has resulted in large social groups being in a really terrible situation. At the same time there are huge shortages in equipment in small medical centers or bigger hospitals, in schools, social institutions, etc. Greek Rotarians are more sensitive than anybody else in problems of this kind. They have identified the needs and have planned projects to address the problems. Dear friends, Greek Rotarians are asking for your help to implement the planned projects and activities. In the following pages you can see three of the projects that were planned and are to be supported by RID 2470 and Rotary clubs. If you think you can help even in part to carry them out, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you in advance for your help, and we hope we will soon hear from you and, of course, we will gladly welcome you in our beautiful country and offer you a memorable experience. Kosmas Choutouriadis Governor 2013-14 2470 District Rotary International

2. Proposals for projects concerning Health & Disease Treatment GLOBAL GRANT
After an assessment made by Rotary clubs of RID 2470, numerous serious shortages were identified in local medical centers (surgeries), especially on small frontier islands in the Aegean Sea. We can definitely start by supporting five local surgeries with urgent needs (the surgeries are on islands visited by many tourists in the summer without having the necessary equipment and in the winter they are often cut off from the neighboring bigger islands or the mainland as travels are very often extremely difficult). The total cost of the equipment for each surgery amounts to 4,969 Euro or 6,377.47 USD (total prices including taxes). Total cost for 5 local surgeries is 31,887.35 USD. All calculations were made at Euro/Dollar rate= 1.283450 The amount RID 2470 has available for supporting club projects is 3,500 USD. The clubs participating in this project will contribute 6,000 USD for its implementation. An equal amount is required from districts and clubs.

3. Proposals for projects concerning purchase of mobile fire extinguishing systems - DISTRICT GRANT
More and more areas of the earth become drier due to an increase of average temperature, especially in the northern hemisphere. At the same time, together with air pollutants, the quantity of carbon remains on earth is increased. As a result, these areas become more and more susceptible to catching fire. These are fires which very often do not start due to mans intervention but due to natural phenomena like a thunder. In the summer 2007, there was one of the most serious environmental catastrophes in the history of modern Greece. Extensive fires in numerous places of the country, especially in August, burnt down over 268,834 acres of land (2,700 km) and 63 people were killed. By August 30, 1,500 houses had been burnt down and 6,000 people were left homeless. The cost of the catastrophe amounts to five billion Euro. The fire burnt down 4.5 million olive trees and 60,000 sheep and goats. The areas affected by fires were the prefectures of Messinia, Arcadia, Helia, Achaia, Laconia, Argolida and Corinthia, with the prefecture of Helia having suffered the most extensive and disastrous stroke. Especially in the area of ancient Olympia the fire burnt down thousands of acres of forest land and fields, and there was danger even for the archaeological site of ancient Olympia, a monument that UNESCO has characterized as world heritage.

The disaster could have been avoided if the communities which are in the region had the basic equipment to fight a fire at its initial stage. The Rotary clubs of the Peloponnese, wishing to protect both the natural and the cultural wealth of the region, have planned a project to address this need. The project includes supplying the existing community trucks with mobile fire extinguishing systems. This project has been presented to the administrative authorities of the prefectures in question and was welcomed with enthusiasm by all concerned. So, the Rotary clubs of the Peloponnese (RC of Patra Gephyra, Patra, Patra Panachaiko, Patra Aghios Andreas, and Kalamata) seek partners in order to be able to implement this crucial project. The selected fire extinguishing equipment is appropriate for extinguishing a fire at its initial stage and has been tried in similar cases in Spain. The cost of each fire extinguishing piece of machinery amounts to 2,585 USD plus VAT 23% (3,180 USD Final unit price). The need is for five mobile fire extinguishing systems. The clubs have raised the amount of 4,000 USD and RID 2470 has 4,000 USD from the DDF in order to support the clubs, which means that clubs interested in participating in the project could contribute the rest 7,900 USD. Interested clubs (one or more) could contribute any amount they can afford for the project to be completed.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Athens

Athens
Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. In the 5th Century BC (the Golden Age of Pericles) the culmination of Athens long, fascinating history the citys values and civilization acquired a universal significance.

ver the years, a multitude of conquerors occupied Athens, and erected unique, splendid monuments - a rare historical palimpsest. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and in two centuries since it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm. A large part of the towns historical centre has been converted into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (the largest in Europe), leading to the major archaeological sites (archaeological park), reconstructing to a large degree the ancient landscape.

Around Acropolis
The tour starts at the temple of Olympian Zeus (6th c. B.C.), one of the largest in antiquity and close by Hadrians Arch (131 A.D.), which forms the symbolic entrance to the city. From there, walking along Dionysou Areopaghitou Street (on the south side of the Acropolis) you pass by the ancient Theatre of Dionysos (5th c. B.C.), where most of the tragedies by Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylos and Aristophanes were performed. If you keep walking, you will reach the ruins of the Asklepieion (5th c. B.C.) and the Stoa of Eumenes (2th c. B.C.) and from there the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, which was built in 161 A.D. and is nowadays the venue of the performances of the Athens Festival. From there you climb up to the sacred rock of the Acropolis, the site of some of the most important masterpieces of worldwide architecture and art, the most renowned of which is the Parthenon temple. Apart from this, also impressive are the Propylaea, the temple of the Athene Nike and the Erechtheion, while you must not skip a visit to the Museum, located close to the Parthenon. Moreover, from the rock you have an impressive view of the city. Only 300m away from the sacred rock of Acropolis stands the impressive new Acropolis Museum, one of the most important contemporary

works of architecture in Athens. It is made of steel, glass and concrete and it houses 4,000 priceless finds from the Acropolis monuments that represent its history and function as the most important religious centre of ancient Athens. Coming down from the Acropolis you arrive at the Areios Pagos, the most ancient law court of the world. Opposite, there is Philopappou Hill, with its beautiful cobbled paths and the Roman monument by the same name on its top, while close by is the Pnyx, where the citizens of ancient Athens used to assemble and exert their democratic rights. Walking farther along the pedestrian road you arrive at the Ancient Agora, which was the commercial, political and religious centre of ancient Athens. A visit to the archaeological site will give you the opportunity to become acquainted with the workings of Classical Athenian democracy. From there, via Hermou Street, you arrive at the Kerameikos, the largest cemetery of the ancient city, with impressive tomb sculptures and stelae. The Iridanos River, sacred in antiquity, runs through the archaeological site.

Delos

Delos, the birth place of Apollo and Artemis, used to be a religious centre for the whole of Greece in the ancient times, as well as the principal trading port in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Roman times. Delos is uninhabited today and is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, receiving large numbers of visitors who flock to admire remarkable monuments and impressive mosaics. Unrivalled natural beauty, beaches of crystal clear waters, unique Byzantine footpaths connecting traditional villages and breathtaking landscapes make Paros, located at the heart of Cyclades, one of the most beloved holiday destinations in Greece Naxos, the biggest and the greenest island in the Cyclades with impressively high mountains, fertile valleys, lush green gorges, stunning seascapes and traditional villages perched high on mountain tops, where the inhabitants still wear their traditional dress and live off the fruits of the land! Naxos is also an island of beautiful old churches, monasteries and Venetian castles coexisting harmoniously with Cycladic cubic houses... Syros, This is the island where Greek tradition and western influence come to a harmonious marriage. Hermoupoli (meaning the city of Hermes) is the islands capital town and has been the first important trade and industrial centre of the country in the 19th century.

The Ionian Islands

The temperate climate, the deep and cool sea waters, the cultural heritage, and the cheerfulness of the inhabitants, make the Ionian Islands the ideal place for a holiday as well as rest and relaxation.

hat is more, the traits of the Ionian Islands are perfectly combined with a flawless tourism infrastructure, excellent hotel accommodation, restaurants, diving centers, sea sports, cultural events, and a multitude of sights, historic monuments and museums worth visiting. Scattered along the western coastline of Central Greece, the Ionian Islands as they are known, are an island cluster comprising twelve small and large islands whose total surface area comes to 2,200 square kilometers. Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu (Kerkyra), Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxi are the six, large Ionian Islands. Antipaxi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, Meganisi and the deserted islets of Strofades south of Zakynthos are the smaller Ionian Islands. Together with the island of Kythira and the neighboring Antikythira the islands form the island cluster of Eptanisa. Nevertheless it should be

noted that Kythira and Antikythira are completely cut off from the rest of the Ionian Islands situated as they are across southern Peloponnese and the coast of Laconia. Once, the Ionian Islands were part of Central Greece but were torn apart when the terrain sank due to the seismic activity along the great coastline fault of the Ionian Sea. This accounts not only for the ragged shores and hauntingly beautiful beaches but it also accounts for the islands tall mountains, once part of the Pindos mountain range which crosses Central Greece. It also accounts for the great depth of the waters in the area which, at 4,406 meters, is the greatest in the Mediterranean.

monuments, traditional mountain villages and luxurious holiday resorts. Feel the essence of Mythical Crete in this mountainous, remote and selfsufficient region of the island of Crete. Chania The region of Chania on the western side of the island, is dominated by the impressive White Mountains (in Greek: Lefk ri) and its famous National Park, which occupy the largest part of the region. The Prefecture of Chania provides tourist services and activities of all kinds, satisfying all the choices. The city of Chania maintains unaltered all of its characteristics, from the time of the Venetian Rule up until today. Heraklion The largest and most densely populated region on the island of Crete is Heraklion (Irklion). Nestling picturesquely among two imposing mountain ranges di (Mt Psiloritis) to the west and Dikti (Lasithitika mountains) to the east Irklion boasts exceptional archaeological treasures, significant coastal settlements, a series of picturesque villages, vast valleys with olive groves and vineyards as well as the best organized tourist infrastructure in Crete. A unique combination of urban scenery and natural wealth makes the region of Irklion an appealing all-year-round destination. Due to its geographical position between Africa, Europe, and Asia Minor and due to its mild climate, Crete became a center of culture as early as Neolithic times. The first prehistoric settlements appeared in Crete around 6000 BC while in 2600 BC settlers who knew how to craft bronze arrived in Crete. It was then that the illustrious course of the Minoan Civilization began, reaching its peak around 1950 BC with the erection of the imposing palaces in Knossos, Faistos, and Malia. Mythology has it that it was in a cave of Crete where the goddess Rhea hid the newborn Zeus. In that cave, Zeus was brought up by the nymphs while the demonical Kouretes would strike their shields loudly so that Cronus would not hear the crying of the baby Zeus and eat it. It was also to Crete that Zeus, disguised as a bull, took Europa so that they could enjoy their love together. Their union produced a son, Minos, who ruled Crete and turned it into a mighty island empire of the seas. In Minoan times, even Attica would pay a tribute tax to Crete, until Theseus, the Athenian prince, killed the Minotaur. The truth behind the myth is the existence of a mighty and wealthy kingdom and of a civilisation that is considered the most ancient one on the European continent.
