1. Overview of JCM project

Manufacturing coal ash products
Indonesian Coal fired power station
Expansion of coal fired power generation is needed for a stable power supply

Indonesian Coal ash

Since coal ash has high alkali content, it is effective for neutralization of strong acidic soil

Japanese Granulation technology

Japanese technology of preventing elution of heavy metal from coal ash

Coal ash products

Products can be used for neutralization It is effective for improving water permeability as well as retention by its physical aggregated structure

1. Overview of BOCM project

Strong advantageous point of this project As Indonesia needs more electricity and discharge of coal ash will increase in the near future.

Indonesia has vast area

with strong acid soil. Our project is able to create productive land from strong acid soil utilizing coal ash.

1. Overview of BOCM project

Research items Applicability test of Japanese technology to Indonesian strong acid soils
Soil chemical analysis Plant cultivation tests

Creating methodology to evaluate GHG emission reduction through soil improvement

Soil improvement testing Monitoring GHG from improved soil using chamber method

3. Monitoring methods
Monitoring Items
1. GHG emission by project
Item Electricity to produce products Fuel to transport products Fuel for soil improvement Emission by improved soil Method Wattmeter Receipt Receipt Actual measurement by chamber Frequency Continuous 1 / year 1 / year More than 10 days / year

2. Area of forest conserved by project referring to records of forest management

4. Quantification of GHG emissions and MRV methods Eligibility criteria The project should avoid existing practice plan. The land for improvement should not be peat land. Land targeted for improvement should not be used for other purposes. Fossil fuel and electricity for project should be quantitative.

4. Quantification of GHG emissions and MRV methods

Estimated GHG emission reduction (under consideration)
Item Forest conservation (1,000 ha) Soil improvement Produce and transport coal ash products Total GHG emission reduction Model field (t/CO2) 227,332 -29,680 -22,728 174,924 Note For 50 years For first 1 year For first 1 year For 50 years

Item Total GHG emission reduction (13,000,000 ha)

Indonesia (Mt/CO2) 2,274

Note For 50 years

5. Scale of investment
Initial and operating cost (under consideration)
Category Initial Item Construct facility for coal ash products Purchase equipment for soil improvement Operation for 1year Soil improvement Produce coal ash products Transport coal ash products Monitoring Cost (million yen) 195 18 11 13 6 Under consideration Note 33t / d Ex tractor 2 units / 250 ha/y 250 ha 10,000 t 160,000 km

6. Progress and project implementation frame

We are discussing with PT. INHUTANI 1 : State-owned Forestry Company of Indonesia. They have land with both strong acid soil and forest. To proceed to the next step we need to evaluate the results of this FS. Requirements for next step are :
Our coal ash products can neutralize Indonesian strong acid soil. Our coal ash products are safe for plant cultivation. Our methodology is transparent and accurate.

7. Others
To widely diffuse the project
Exchange of land should be approved between forest owner and strong acid soil land-owner

Practice plan

Exchange

7. Others
