A menswear store is having a sale. Buy one dress shirt at full price and get a second shirt for 25% off. If Sam buys two shirts, each with a regular price of $46.64, how much money will he pay for both shirts?
$34.98

$23.32

$104.94

$81.62

SOLUTION
Sam pays full price for the first shirt which is $46.64 and then he gets 25% off the cost for the second shirt. Multiply the cost per shirt by the percentage discount to get the discount for the second shirt: $46.64 x (25 / 100) = $46.64 x 0.25 = $11.66 So, Sam pays $46.64 - $11.66 = $34.98 for the second shirt. $46.64 for the first shirt + $34.98 for the second shirt = $81.62 for both shirts.

A student buys an algebra textbook for $8.92, a philosophy textbook for $18.61, and a dictionary for $9.38. What is the total cost of the books?
$36.45

$46.60

$27.22

$36.91

SOLUTION
To get this answer simply add up the costs of the textbooks. $8.92 + $18.61 + $9.38 = $36.91. A shortcut to quickly answering questions that involve adding decimals is to recognize that the right-most value in the answer (in this case 1) is found by summing the right-most values in the numbers you're adding. 2 + 1 + 8 = 11 which has a right-most value of 1 meaning that the answer will end in 1. Knowing this trick you can eliminate all answers that don't end in 1 which will often leave you with only one or two possible answers for the question.

If an object travels at 0.3 cm per second, how many meters does it travel in 2 hours?
10.80

21.60

2.16

0.36

SOLUTION
Convert the object's speed from cm per second to m per hour:
0.3 cm 60 s
s 60 min min hr 100 cm m

1080 cm 100 cm m
hr

= 10.80

m hr

Then multiply by the number of hours:

10.80

m hr

2hr = 21.60m

What are the next two numbers in this series: {4, 4, 2, 2, 0, ?, ?}

-2, -2

4, 4

0, 0

0, -2

SOLUTION
This series is constructed by alternately multiplying the last number in the series by 1 and then subtracting 2 from the result: 4 4=4x1 2=4-2 2=2x1 0=2-2 Making the next two numbers in the series: 0=0x1 -2 = 0 - 2

- 3 , 3 , 0, 1, 4 , 9.7, ... are:

Real numbers

Irrational numbers

Integers

Whole numbers

SOLUTION
Whole numbers are all positive integers and zero, integers are all positive and negative numbers and zero, rational numbers are any real numbers that can be written as a fraction using an integer as numberator and denominator, irrational numbers are any real numbers that are not rational numbers and that cannot be written as a fraction or as a nonrepeating decimal, and real numbers are the set of all rational and irrational numbers.
