Today, it ranks among
the citys most pictur-
esque locations and fits
among the list of its hid-
den gems.
Wahby Park, located in
front of Blossom Heath
Park along the Nautical
Mile, is a shining example
of how city property
should be used.
Were getting married
here in September,
Bethany Vitale shared one
recent afternoon. Were
here today to just take an-
other look at the places we
might want to be for pic-
tures and things and get
some engagement pic-
tures today.
If you cant tell, Im ex-
cited about it. Its beauti-
ful.
Vitales fiance, Caleb
Golds, lives in the city.
The park is available for
residents to rent at no
charge from 1 4 p.m.
Friday and Saturday after-
noons, Parks and
Recreation Director Greg
Esler said.
Its a popular spot for
weddings and things like
that, he said. And its a
place we want to have
available for residents to
use for these things and to
just enjoy.
Esler said Wahby Park
is also a great example of
the city working in con-
junction with local busi-
nesses.
The city owns the
property, Esler said. But
Landscape Services main-
tains it and the folks at
Blossom Heath sort of op-
erate it. Everyone works
together to make it look as
good as it does.
The park, named in
honor of longtime resi-
dent and former Mayor
Ted Wahby, features a lit
walking path, large pond,
gazebo-style structure,
several benches and a
wide variety of landscape
features and amenities.
Its really a beautiful
place, Vitale said. Were
going to live in St. Clair
Shores after we are mar-
ried so itll be a special
place for us to come and
visit for a long time.

pervisor for Grosse
Pointe Woods. But we
want to make sure our
staff is prepared in case
something does hap-
pen.
Bryon, along with
Grosse Pointe Woods
Director of Public
Services Joe Ahee, and
a staff of more than 100
lifeguards working the
Lake Front Park pool
this summer, gathered
along the pool deck last
week to receive training
in handling emergen-
cies ranging from a slip-
and-fall, to back board-
ing, to CPR.
Were going through
scenarios that have ei-
ther happened before or
could happen, she said.
We are trying to pre-
pare our staff, especial-
ly because we have a
younger staff this year,
for these kinds of situa-
tions. We are going to go
through each scenario
and really put them-
selves in that situation
to see how to handle it.
Emergency Medical
Services staff from St.
Clair Shores put the life-
guards through the pac-
es of a simulated emer-
gency.
Its very important
for our staff to be
ready, Ahee said. We
emphasize safety first,
of course, and we want
our staff to be as well
trained as possible. We
pride ourselves on our
lifeguards and what
their capabilities are.
This type of training is a
part of that. Its very im-
portant.
Byron said the pool
didnt have a single
EMS incident last sea-
son, but being prepared
is crucial.
Fortunatel y, we
didnt have to call for
them last year, Byron
said. And a part of that
is luck, but a bigger part
is the staff being trained
to handle situations that
come up.
The St. Clair Shores
EMS team responds to
calls at Lake Front Park.
The park is in the city
limits of St. Clair
Shores, Ahee said. So
they are the responders
that we call in an emer-
gency. But its really
more of a combined ef-
fort between the two cit-
ies. So, for this training
session they were the
natural choice for this.

Wahby Park reflects city pride

Its called the St.
Clair Shores Country
Music Fest, said activi-
ties committee member
and event producer,
Dennis George. And
its going to be a great
time for everyone.
The event, organized
by George and the com-
mittee, is a two-day
country-music extrava-
ganza Friday, Aug. 2,
and Saturday, Aug. 3, at
Veterans Memorial
Park.
Weve got five great
bands that are going to
be there; two on Friday
and three on Saturday,
and theres going to be a
lot of fun.
The event features a
slew of activities and at-
tractions, including
line-dancing lessons,
barbecue food, beer and
wine, hog-calling con-
test, best country attire
contest and more.
The festival kicks off
at 5 p.m. Friday Aug. 2,
with performances by
Horse Cave Trio and
Joey Vee; and at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 3, when
Taylortucky, Richard
Lawson and the
Southerners, and The
Orbisons take the stage.
Theyre all fantastic
bands, George said.
Admission is $2
Friday and $3 Saturday.
Parking is free.
The festival is the first
in the city, originating
with an idea planted by
Mayor Kip Walby.
Actual l y, Mayor
Walby came to us and
asked if there was
something we could do
with country music be-
cause it is such a popu-
lar genre right now, he
said. We said we
thought we could get
something together, so
we started putting it all
t oget her ar ound
Memorial Day.
George said he hopes
to see between 1,500-
2,000 people at the festi-
val each day.
I think that kind of
crowd would be great,
he said. But we also
want this to be some-
thing that turns into an
annual event for the
city. Thats what we
want to see, too.
The 2013 installment
has no corporate spon-
sorship, but George is
hopeful that can change
in the coming years.
Its solely sponsored
by the Activities
Committee. Its some-
thing we would like to
look into in the future
though, for sure.

In all his 44 years,
Councilman Tony Tiseo
never saw a rat until
Memorial Day weekend.
The story started a few
days prior when Tiseo
learned his neighbor
spotted the vermin in his
garage and made the
necessary repairs to
clean out the harborage.
Shortly thereafter
Tiseo found holes in his
garbage cans.
They moved next
door to my house, he
said.
Upon further investi-
gation, Tiseo learned
rats were making a
home under his low- to-
the-ground backyard
deck, were working
their way around one
corner of his house and
trying to tunnel under
the driveway.
It got really bad fast,
Tiseo said, adding his
family members refused
to go into the backyard.
It was a nightmare.
Tiseo got to work
eradicating the problem
and lost part of his deck
in the process.
It forced us to do
some projects we
werent ready to do, he
said.
The experience, how-
ever, reinforces what ex-
perts have been saying
about controlling the
citys rat problem: If
you take care of your
yard, they move on, he
said.
Theres been no sign
of anything.
City Manager Mike
Smith is expected to un-
veil a new program for
rat abatement in the
coming weeks.

For more than a decade
the Selinsky-Green
Farmhouse Museum Tea
Party has marked the start
of summer with an old
fashion tea party.
Last Wednesday after-
noon, dozens gathered on
the lawn and inside the
historic house ready to
kick off the season by step-
ping back in time.
Its a wonderful tradi-
tion here, Beverly Uresti
said. I get to get all
dressed up and take out
my best hat for this event.
How can that not be fun?
Vintage dresses, ornate
hats some made of
newspapers and other
features, including local
artists, sweet tea and lem-
onade and music are all
hallmarks of the annual
party.
The party attracts all ag-
es, Betsy Dombrowski, 77,
said.
Im here with my
daughter and my grand-
daughter, she said with a
smile. And my great-
granddaughter is on her
way. We always stop by for
a spot of tea and to see all
the hats and dresses.
The event does more
than provide a fun after-
noon for guests, the $3 en-
try fee helps keep the mu-
seum going.
Its an important fund-
raising event for the
Historical Society, which is
the fundraising arm of the
Historical Commission,
said St. Clair Shores
Public Library Director
Rosemary Orlando. This
is what keeps the museum
up and running.
This years event was a
boon for the society,
Orlando said.
It was the most suc-
cessful garden tea party
weve ever had and by far
the best weather, she said.
We had 125 people and
that is just a great turnout
and the most weve ever
had for this event. Were
very excited and very hap-
py with how it went.

MOSQUITO
CONTROL
We all know what a nuisance mosquitoes
can be. The bite, the bumps, the itching,
all a result from an allergic reaction to
the mosquitos saliva.
With graduation parties, bbqs and sit-
ting on the deck enjoying a cold bever-
age the pesky little buggers can drive
the best of us indoors. Removing stand-
ing water is a good start to preventing
the mosquito life cycle.
Mosquito dunks can be used in sh ponds,
bird baths, rain barrels and other stand-
ing water. They are not to be used to treat
nished drinking water when the water
is intended for human consumption.
We have great success with the hose-end
Mosquito Beater spray. It is a permethrin
based insecticide. Hook it up to the hose,
start at the back of the yard and spray the
trees, bushes and then the lawn working
your way back to the house. I use it about
4 days before I have a gathering and it
can last up to 2-weeks.
Then on the day of the party I sprinkle a
powered mosquito repellent that is most-
ly natural products. It contains citronella
oil, garlic, geranium oil, cedar oil and
lemon grass oil. Use it at least an hour
or more before the party and it can last
up to 3-weeks. It smells nice too.
For a topical insect repellant we have
another natural product, Swamp Gator.
It contains geranoil, soybean oil, pep-
permint, rosemary, and geranium oil. I
use it on Harsens Island and love it be-
cause it smells pleasant.
