A Sneak Preview of Lahad Datu Inbreak Malaysia was invaded between February 9 and March 13.

The citizen of Malaysia, especially for those people who was born in the remote village named Kg Tanduo, Lahad Datu have been fled the scene of incursion. The incident happened where a group of armed Filipinos who are followers of the Sultanate of Sulu occupying a village in Lahad Data is not as straight information as others might achieve. In fact, most of the Malaysians people asked why the 2013 Lahad Datu standoff arose after 235 militants, some of whom were armed, arrived by boats in Lahad Datu, Sabahfrom Simunul Island, Tawi-Tawi in southern Philippines on 11 February 2013 happenedwhen the country is heading to for the national 13 th General Election? The timing of the incursion raised a lot of suspicion. Including todays case, 20 Filipinas which can be described as informant have been charged so far in connection with the recent intrusion in Lahad Datu by armed terrorists. The charges included waging war against the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, being members of a terrorist group, sheltering terrorists and recruiting members for a terrorist group. On the other hand, a local police corporal has also been charged with failing to provide instantaneous information on terrorist activities. Its time for us to sit down and to weigh or consider some ideas, which were went wrongthat lead these to the unexpected tragedy occurred and erupted on Friday in clashes. In connection withthat the incursion woe betide to eight policemen and bravery soldiers buried during the initially peaceful stand-off. The history always gives us some good lessons and told us the true story behind it. The Lahad Datus inbreak has once

more let our political priorities trump security consideration, with acceptable result. The Philippine claimed to Sabah state in Malaysia, was a product of a geopolitical contest between the Philippines (possibly in alliance with the United States) and Great Britain, was similar to any other crisis between two country on one side and the other country, on the other, around the same period. The plan of invasion, at last, caused not prosperity but ruined. Was the incident of invasion due to unauthorized release of the information brought immediate cause of a mission or battles to be failed and comprise our national security? Let look at what the Philippines and International media reported so far. First, there have been reports from various Philippines media as well as international news agencies, for example, Reuters, that a Malaysian Opposition politician leader was believed to have met with the Sulu Sultan the year before and gave the Oppositions support to their claim to Sabah. At the same time, Philippines Inquirer revealed a confidence that the Sulu Sultan decided to reclaim Sabah or at least ask for compensation. Besides that, the report said the Philippines Military intelligence sources consistently mentioned these external factor, as an Inquirer source described, that appear to have taken advantage of the decision of the Sulu Sultan of pursue their Sabahs claim, are one of small faction that is in it for the money, an anti-President Benigno Aquino administration group and the Malaysian political Opposition. Base on these reviews of the information, we may at least conclude that someone has triggered the fire of hatred against Philippines and Malaysias friendship. Secondly, there were also reports that linked Nur Misuari, the leader of Moro National Liberation Front (MILF) which has closed ties with Sulu Sultan with the Lahad
2

Datu Incursion. The resourceful report mention Nur Misuari is unpleasant with peace deal between Philippines Government and MILF which has brokered by Malaysia. However, Misuari was reported angry with Malaysia after it has also successfully brokered another peace deal between the Philippines Government with his rival group, MILF at the end of last year. The Philippines media also reported that the Philippines military establishment has reveal to them that Malaysia Oppositions leader has met Nur Misuari recently in Manila. The fact that close relationship of Misuari was revealed by Raja Petra through his blog, Malaysia Today, where he has published a document from wiki leak of a May 2007 stated communication from the American Embassy in Manila which reaffirms Nur Misuaris strong relationship. It is not impossible for the remote areas to be on par with their urban counterparts when equipped withthe right tools. Although rural areas used to have less exposed compared to those living in cities, nowadays this could be easily reversed through technology by bridging the gap between two distances. Now, one can see some quarters on the internet are recycling unrelated video of killings in the Philippines and associating them to the Lahad Datu shooting. Everything what they do is clearly to gain political mileage and continuing to paint a bad picture of the present Government. Social media becomes an avenue to spread rumours and create viral negative spin. Now, given all the statements by the international media, from credible sources and how things are spun through the social media, it raised alarm bells whether the Lahad Datu incident was carefully pre-planned but it was certainly a failure in our Military and Police Intelligences Department to prevent such kind of Sabah incursion.

No single theory can embrace and explain every facet of human behavior. But, all human beings inherited their basic instinctive action of protecting their own species in term of Biology means to receive (a characteristic) from one's parents by genetic transmission. There is a touch of irony in fighting in Sabah where Malaysian forces, using some fighter jets, laser-guided bombs, artillery and hundreds of troops, have failed to subdue a handful of Filipino Muslims from Sulu. If we can refresh our memories, it was Malaysia who trained and formed, the Moro National Liberation Front to fight the Philippine government years ago, in Sabah, MNLF fighters in guerrilla warfare. Now it is veteran MNLF fighters who are leading the Sulu force in fighting the Malaysians. Obviously, they learned their lessons well from Malaysians armed force. In spite of the overwhelming advantage in men and ordnance, the Malaysians could not find the fringed followers of the Sultanate of Sulu in the jungles of Sabah which, they know like the back of their hands. There is another way the Philippine and Malaysian governments can persuade the Filipino Muslims to ceasefire and go home in peace. That is for Malaysia to either agree to take the Sultanate of Sulus claim to Sabah to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or to negotiate with the Philippine government and the sultanate, with a definite date to seat in the round table. Even though now we all knew that the Sultanate of Sulu has laid claim to Sabah, saying it had merely leased North Borneo in 1878 to the British North Borneo Company for an annual payment of 5,000 Malayan dollars then, which was increased to 5,3000 Malayan dollars in 1903. Sabah, however, joined Malaya, Sarawak and Singapore to form Malaysia In 1963, after which Malaysia continued paying an annual stipend of
4

RM5,3000 to the Sulu Sultanate on the basics of the sultanate ceding the Borneo state. All Malaysians people know that the Cobbold Commissions 1962 referendum in Sabah and Sarawak, where about two0third of the people supported the creation of Malaysia, thus exercising their right to self-determination. Contrary to expectation, history is not that simple and of course Malaysia has no intention of giving up Sabah to this little band of Filipinos. The crux of their disagreement lies in a contract made in 1878, between the Sultanate of Sulu and the British North Borneo Company. Under this contract known as pajak, the company could occupy Sabah in perpetually as long as it paid a regular sum of money. Even today, Malaysia pays an annual stipend to the Sultanate of Sulu. But the British and, after that an independent Malaysia, interpreted pajak to mean sale, while the Sulu Sultanate has always maintained it means lease.Yet whatever the motive was on the 1878 treaty, it is very obviously that in 1877 centuries after the Brunei civil war the Brunei Sultanate then still believed and maintained that the North Borneo territory was under its control! This therefore proceeds to the great and ultimate implication that the present Sabah claim is totally unfounded, a daring and shameless lie, hence not even worth arguing over, simply because of the high possibility that Sabah never belonged to Sulu! This can perhaps be explained as a strategy to prevent any trouble from Sulu in the form of attack or intrusion into Sabah, knowing that Sulu had been claiming Sabah since the end of Brunei civil war. So, what does Lahad Datu mean for Malaysia, and what are some of the major implication for the country and the region? First, there is a serious security deficit in the eastern coastal area of Sabah that needs to be rectified in a comprehensive mode. As
5

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak aptly state it, Lahad Datu is wake-up call. Now, its the top priority for the new Defence Minister to look into the East Sabah Security Command (Esscomm) and the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) as his first order and we hope that it needs to be replaced by long-term and strategic measures to transform the security environment in that specific area permanently. Previously, the security problems in Sabah have been traditionally under-estimated, specific incidents like piracy and kidnappings and now armed intrusion needs to be halt. The Essczone that has just been established will bring much needed concerted civilian, police and military means to bear upon complex problems prevailing along the 1,400km-long eastern coastline, which is twice as long as the Malaysian-Thai border. Besides that, we shall overview Malaysias foreign policy and the conduct of the countrys international relations. Added to this is the external environment, or what may be termed as the systematic determinant, which become increasingly important with the advent of globalization and in the wake of the epoch of communication and information technology (ICT). Armed conflicts in the Philippines cannot but have serious domino effects on Sabah, such poor and marginalized element like the Sulu claimants will be tempted to agitate on the non-issue. Until peace and stability is restored in Mindanao and its adjacent islands and the people there can earn a decent livelihood, Sabah will remain a magnet of attraction for those who seek greater security and a better life. Malaysias foreign policy is no exception. Sabahs security problems are national concern and it lies ultimately in the Philippines, not in Malaysia. Development projects in southern Philippines will help alleviate the problem further and be mutually beneficial.

Malaysias role in facilitating peace efforts and the existence of ASEAN has encouraged patterns of behavior that reduce security by enhancing bilateral relations as well as fostering habits of open dialogue on political and security matters, because action speaks louder than words. Close bilateral friendship and collaboration is indispensable for tackling security problem like those we faced in Sabah. At the multilateral level, Malaysia has and pursue to be active in the OIC, Commonwealth, NAM and the UN. Such fora are useful in promoting co-operation between member states, in finding solutions to global problems and in establishing the peaceful conduct of international relations. Malaysia will continue to use the platform available to speak on global issues like human rights, environmental degradation, terrorism, refugees, democracy, and the reform of the UN Security Council. One significant phenomenon that will impact strongly on Malaysias foreign policy as we move into the next millennium is globalization. Our greatest nations challenge would be to extract the best from the process of globalization and to give our best to the system. And in return to contribute towards making the world much more peaceful andequitable, in order to provide leadership within our region and to demonstrate exemplary and responsible membership of the international community. In the case of Malaysia, complex and volatile security situations are best handled by stable and strong government that are inclusive and that have been democratically elected. On the political front, we see the end of the cold war. Yet the world today is no safer than we had been led to believe. The so-called friendly global village has not come about. Old conflicts either refuses to die or simply have a way of coming out of their graves to haunt us. Added to this, terrorism issues which continue to threaten the

lives and property of innocent victims and the proliferation of weapon of mass destruction which brings fourth the prospect of nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare need of great concern also remain. Thousands of Filipinosresiding in Malaysia illegally, some for decades, some of whom forced to leave behind family members, the 2013 Lahad Datu standoff should treat as a repercussions which brings some reciprocal action after the impact. This part of history should be passed on to the younger generations so they can appreciate the contributions and remembers the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives to protect our country. The Jews waged decades of war, including terrorism, to regain their homeland, Israel, and at last succeeded. The Filipino Muslims hope and keeping their faint that they will be able to achieve the same feat by waging war and claiming Sabah the homeland of Sulu Muslims- is definitely wrong from the first move. Henceforward, the government has a major role to play towards achieving unity through its policies and actions, it is also necessary for our children to be educated on unity by encouraging them to inculcate Rukun Negara principles. The task of meeting these challenges has to be shouldered by teachers and parents who are the agents or role models to inter-racial integration and to enhance their patriotism based on the principles of the Rukun Negara is all the more needed if we are to succeed in making Malaysia a united nation. We cant stop the columnist to stop interfere our nationals affairs, but at least we can educate our youth to shield them with social conventions and cultivate their mind by understanding that other people are people too, with their own minds, thought, feelings, beliefs, and perceptions.
