EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the combination of a unique identification technology and radio frequency based communication technology, which automatically identifies unique items using radio waves. Objects are identified by a tag that comprises of a microchip that stores a unique serial number identifying the product What retailers think of the technology on a broader basis and how much they really understand about it? To get a more holistic view of their mindset and gauge their current awareness and perceptions of RFID, the project titled Study Examining the Perception of retail industry towards Radio Frequency Identification Technology was conducted. The survey included a brief explanation of RFID and a wide range of questions to understand How do respondents perceive RFID? Which benefits stemming from RFID are most important to them? What concerns them the most? What would make them willing to accept RFID?

A total 50 retail outlets representing 10 different retail markets were visited in order to represent virtually the entire retail industry to the best possible extent. The questionnaires were administered to the store managers in person, with a brief explanation of RFID technology. The questionnaire was made as comprehensive as possible to cover various aspects related to the research. The questionnaires were administered only to those respondents who showed genuine desire towards the research and the technology

THE MAJOR FINDINGS WERE


42% of retailers have a favorable perception towards RFID technology where as 48% didnt know or had no opinion 40% of retailers said implementing RFID would raise the cost of consumer goods. The major potential benefits from RFID are Instant access to more product info Faster recovery of stolen items Instant access to product availability info

70% of respondents said they were extremely concerned about the use of consumer data by a third party.

Major Factors affecting willingness to buy RFID are Legislated privacy protection The ability to disable RFID tags at the store after purchase.

40% of respondents expect the impact of RFID on customer privacy to be greater than other technologies (cell phones, debit/credit cards, frequent shopper cards, smart cards and camera phones).

One-third of the respondents said it will be two to five years until RFID will be a reality.
