Good morning to our Principal, Puan Zaharah, teachers and friends.

Today, I will speak about the damage caused by dams. We all know that piped water and electricity are not luxuries but necessities. However, to build a dam, you have to flood a valley completely. When you flood a valley, you not only destroy the natural habitat of animals but you also kill a lot of them. We may be able to save the bigger animals but we cannot save all of them. When animals are forced to move from their natural habitat, it is not so easy for the animals to adapt to their new environment. They just die in the old one. The fireflies of Kuala Selangor, for example, may be gone forever. Some animals can be saved but this is not the case with flora. Many trees have been in existence for centuries and they play an important role in exerting an influence over the weather pattern of a country. They also keep the earth moist and cool. Furthermore, trees prevent the silting and the drying up of rivers. We have to find alternative ways to obtain drinking water and sources of energy. We have to save our environment for our future generations. I urge all of you to do your bit to help the indigenous people who are our brothers and sisters, as well as help protect the trees, rivers and beasts. Thank you.
