(iii) Enter the scores into two new lists in Dataplotter. Copy and complete the table below. Round values, where necessary, to one decimal place. (b) (i) Use the two measures of location that you have calculated to say which baby had more sleep on average. (ii) Use all three measures of spread to say which baby had greater spread in the number of hours of sleep. (c) (i) Provide boxplots for these two datasets (either drawn by hand or as a printout from Dataplotter). Include all the relevant information required for drawing boxplots as set out in Subsection 1.2 of Unit 11. The summary values can be displayed on the boxplots themselves or in a table to the side of the chart, as they appear in Dataplotter. (ii) Are the data for Newborn 1 evenly spread, or are they skewed? If the data are skewed, state whether they are skewed to the left or right. What does this tell you about how the data are spread in the Newborn 1 dataset? (d) The next month, the parents of Newborn 2 recorded how many uid ounces of milk their baby had drunk each day, and how many hours the baby slept each night. They drew a scatterplot of the number of hours slept against the number of uid ounces drunk. They calculated the correlation coecient as 0.987. (i) The correlation coecient is positive. What does this tell you about the relationship between the number of uid ounces drunk against the number of hours slept? (ii) Does the size of the correlation coecient provide proof that a higher number of uid ounces drunk guarantees a greater number of hours slept that night? Explain your answer. (e) Subsequently, the parents of Newborn 2 recorded the hours slept over 10 periods of 24 hours. They found that the mean amount of sleep was 11.3 hours. They drew a histogram of their newborns sleep. Of the histograms (A) and (B) in Figure 1, which corresponds to the sleep pattern of this ten-day period for Newborn 2? Explain your answer.

Throughout this question, you should use algebra to work out your answers. You may use a graph to check that your answers are correct, but it is not sucient to read your results from a graph.
5 (a) A straight line passes through the points 2, 2 and 2, 11 2 .

(i) Calculate the gradient of the line. (ii) Find the equation of the line. (iii) Find the x-intercept of the line. (b) Does the line y = 2x + 3 intersect with the line that you found in part (a)? Explain your answer. (c) Find the coordinates of the point where the lines with the following equations intersect: 4x + 8y = 32, 2x + y = 6. (d) Using a throwing stick, Dominic can throw his dogs ball all the way across the park. Assume that the park is at. The path of the ball can be modelled by the equation y = 0.02x2 + x + 2, where x is the horizontal distance of the ball from where Dominic throws the ball, and y is the vertical distance of the ball from the ground (both measured in metres). (i) Find the y -intercept of the parabola y = 0.02x2 + x + 2 (the point at which the ball leaves the throwing stick). (ii) (1) By substituting x = 20 into the equation of the parabola, nd the coordinates of the point where the line x = 20 meets the parabola. (2) Using your answer to part (d)(ii)(1), explain whether the ball clears a tree of height 8.5 m that stands 20 m from Dominic and lies in the path of the ball. (iii) (1) Find the x-intercepts of the parabola. Give your answers in decimal form, correct to two decimal places. (2) Use your answers from part (d)(i) and part (d)(iii)(1) to nd how far horizontally Dominic has thrown the ball, assuming that the ball lands on the ground.

(iv) 2a2 = 48a (b) Factorise the expression x2 + 2x 35, and hence solve the equation x2 + 2x 35 = 0. (c) A student was asked to rearrange the formula b 2c(b + 7) 2 to make b the subject (assuming that 1 4c = 0). 11a = The students incorrect attempt is shown below.

b 11a = 2 2c(b + 7) Clear fraction by multiplying by 2 Multiply out the bracket Collect b terms Factorise Divide by 1 4c (1 4c 0 ) So b = 11a 28c 1 4c

Throughout this question, take care to explain your reasoning carefully. You should round your answers, where necessary, to two signicant gures. Satellites that orbit the Earth at a distance of 35 800 km above the Earths equator are said to be in geostationary orbit. In this orbit, their distance above the Earths surface is xed. A telecommunications company owns satellites A, B and C , which are in geostationary orbit. Satellite A is exactly opposite satellite C (i.e. AC is the diameter of the geostationary orbit). Satellite B is 51 000 km from satellite A, and ABC is 90. Assume that the Earth is spherical, with diameter 12 700 km. A diagram of the satellites in orbit is given in Figure 2.

(b) A relay station D is built on the Earth between satellites A and B . ADB is 85, and DAB is 45. This information is also shown in Figure 2. (i) Is triangle ABC similar to triangle ADB ? Explain your answer. (ii) Calculate the length DB . (c) A scale model of the Earth and the Moon is made, using the following values: the radius of the Moon is 1700 km, and the radius of the Earth is 6370 km. In the model, the diameter of the Moon is 3.4 cm. (i) Find the radius of the scale model of the Earth. (ii) Find the volume of the scale model of the Earth.

(a) A book publisher estimates that after a particular title has been on sale for 20 weeks, the total number of books sold so far can be modelled by the linear equation s = 1600(t 20) + 200 000 (t 20), where s is the total number of sales, and t is the time on sale in weeks. (i) Find the number of sales after 24 weeks. (ii) Calculate the week at which the total number of sales passes 215 900. (iii) Write down the gradient of the straight line represented by the equation s = 1600(t 20) + 200 000. What does this measure in the practical situation being modelled? (iv) Explain why the vertical s-intercept of a graph of s is not 200 000. (v) Either using Graphplotter or by hand, sketch the graph of s = 1600(t 20) + 200 000, putting s on the vertical axis and covering the time interval 20 t 35. (b) A DVD publisher estimates that in the rst 8 weeks on sale, the total number sold of a particular DVD can be modelled by the exponential equation s = 94 (2)t , where s is the number of sales to date, and t is the time on sale in weeks, 1 t 8. So by the end of the rst week (t = 1), 188 DVDs have been sold. (i) Copy and complete the table below, giving the number of sales at the end of each week. Number of weeks on sale Number of DVDs sold to date 1 3 5 7 8 (ii) Either by hand or using Dataplotter, produce a scatterplot of these data. Put Number of weeks on the horizontal axis. (iii) Use the method shown in Unit 13, Subsection 5.2 to nd the week in which the exponential model predicts that the number of sales will rst reach 9000. (iv) Write down the value of the scale factor for the exponential model. Use this to nd the percentage increase in the number of DVDs being sold each week. [2 ] 188 [2 ] [1 ] [2 ] [2 ] [2 ] [3 ]
