ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
First and foremost I wish to thanks SUNGRO SEEDS LTD. For giving me this opportunity to study and present report onAssesing the potential of Rajsthan for investment in development of improved variety of chickpea

it has been a nice experience and exposure to practical work .Professional accomplishment are always team oriented so I take this opportunity to thank those all who guided me for its successful completion I would like to thank my project guide Dr. Arti who guided me since beginning till its last and last but not the least Mr.Chinta haran (ABM-JAIPUR) for his valuable guidelines and suggestions.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report is framed for evaluating the scope of new pod resistant variety for chickpea cultivation .This research report was carried out in selected areas of Rajasthan which are potential areas for chickpea .This report is based on the farmer ,distributor and retailors feedback through a pre-designed questionnaire. Apart from farmer and distributor, informations are also collected from KVKS and research centre of different distt. Of Rajasthan. Information are collected in all aspects .This report also find the existing varieties of chickpea ,bottleneck in chickpea cultivation ,market competitor for chickpea varieties ,feasibility of project , financial viability for new variety In market and scope of the variety .At the end report presents farmer additional feedback and their suggestion .conclusion is drawn on the basis of questionnaire and farmer dealer and distributor interviews.

INTRODUCTION
The main objective of the work was to address and evaluate the market scope for new variety of chickpea and based on the information collected to make a decision about investment for development of variety if it is financial viable. For this purpose Rajsthan was selected to carry out the research, five potential distt. for chickpea were selected and chickpea farmer were randomly interviewed for this purpose from different taluka and villages in each distt. Information collected in form of predesigned questionnaire from farmer and distributor along with retailors of each distt. the information collected contains detail of the focused group, land holding ,some basics information about chickpea cultivation problem faced by farmer for chickpea cultivation ,scope of new pod resistant variety, process of selling and buying chickpea ,role of govt in supporting chickpea farmer, source of chickpea seed for sowing along with farmer feedback about pricing of new variety .The rationale behind the project is about investment for devolpment of improved strain of chickpea, this report will focus to conclude about investment should be made for chickpea strain or not ,will it be a economical viable decision to invest in chickpea segment

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

To identify the potential market for chickpea in Rajsthan To find the scope of development of new variety of chickpea To identify major supplier for chickpea seeds in market Major bottlenecks in existing chickpea varieties and production constraints of chickpea Investment is worth for development of new and improved strain of chickpea or not?

MAJOR MARKET PLAYER FOR SUPPLYING CHICKPEA SEEDS

beejal@rajseeds.com
Rajsthan seeds corporation capture around 70% of share in supply of new chickpea seeds to the farmers . it procure chickpea from farmer and certify the seeds and then after further processing of seeds it sell it into market through cooperative,RSC depot ,privete seed producer, through own marketing channel. It also provide subsidy to farmer for purchasing certified chickpea seeds.it has devolped popular varities like c235(very popular because of its yield),RSG-888,RSG-963,RSG-973 ,GNG-663 are other popular varieties

2) NATIONAL SEED CORPORATION NSC is another player for supplying chickpea seeds to farmer through its private owned depot and sales point .It is involved I production as well as marketing of chickpea varieties It capture around 25% share in market for supplying chickpea seeds .Some of the varieties released by NSC are SOUVENIR yet not that popular among farmer. Chickpea seed production is only under the control of universities and govt. institute and they further make germplasm (foundation and certified seeds) available to state seed farm, NSC, and they further produce the seeds and market them with the help of depot ,private grower ,private distributor .local producer also buy the seeds form SFCI ,NSC,SSC etc and produce them by themselves and sell locally through their own store. FINDINGS According to the farmer chickpea is an orphan crop which is grown in land deprived of irrigation Mostly farmer use their own seed for chickpea production There is negligible production of Kabuli type of chickpea in Rajsthan RSC and NSC hold the major share for chickpea seed distribution Distributor and retailer get around 7-8 Rs margin per Kg of chickpea Area under chickpea cultivation is declining since farmer are shifting toward wheat and barley production There is no private player involved in chickpea seed production and marketing Farmer use their own seeds for three continuous years ,then after they replace them by purchasing new seeds Pod borer and root rot along with wilt are major constraints for chickpea production Pod borer is controlled by spraying chloro spray Two to three irrigation are essential for better chickpea yield Frost and wind is limiting factor for chickpea production because it destroy chickpea in flowering stage Govt. subsidy is major limiting factor for private player to come into chickpea business Chickpea require very less cost of cultivation compared t wheat which is an advantage of chickpea over wheat cultivation but wheat chickpea is a sure cash crop while chickpea has high risk of pod borer attack Seed replacement rate is increasing in Rajasthan for chickpea

RECOMMENDATION MOU with SAU and SSC before coming into chickpea business Extensive trials of developed variety can proved to be a powerful tools Merely developing pod resistant variety cannot hold a grip in market and shift farmer from traditional chickpea production pattern . A drought hardy variety with enhance yield and pod resistant character can proved to be significant if supported by successful trials in first few years There is a need of proper marketing channel for chickpea seed distribution because govt. is a failure in successful marketing of chickpea seeds so private player has huge scope for marketing and development of chickpea improved variety seeds.
