BELOVEDS IN CHRIST,
Summer 2013 will be filled with both celebration and change! On Sunday in July and August we will worship at 9:00 a.m. only; please note this and mark your calendars. We hope to do sanctuary renovation this summer: repairing and replacing flooring, refinishing pews and kneelers, painting and otherwise restoring our worship space in ways that have not been done here for twenty-two years. Elsewhere in this issue you will read that Stephen Black has resigned as our Minister of Music for personal reasons that necessitate him being near his family in Kentucky. We will celebrate Stephens ministry and bid him Faretheewell! before he leaves in mid-August. I hope to have his successor in place by Sunday, September 8, 2013. Frances & I and Don have sold the house in which we have lived for twentyfive years. My answer to Where will you move? is Very close to church and very friendly for Luke, our golden retriever. We have several months to move, and I am hoping a change of residence this summer is in store. And, of course, we will be close enough that Don can continue to come home from studies at Marymount California University in Palos Verdes and job with The Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro! Summer is my favorite time of year. Not only for rest and recreation, baseball and the beach, but Summer is time for remembering significant anniversaries: June 30 (1985) is the anniversary of Frances and my wedding at Saint Marks Episcopal Church in Berkeley. July 4 is Frances birthday (you know she is a firecracker, dont you?). July 30 is my birthday; as Bob Sattler used to say, Im a 1946 model! And, July 11 is the anniversary of my ordination as a priest; yes, this is why 7/11 is important to me. On July 11, 2013, I will celebrate forty years as a priest. In the Chapel of Grace at Grace Cathedral on Wednesday evening, July 11, 1973, The Revd Dick York, Pastor of the Free Church of Berkeley for which I was Deacon preached a sermon titled Heralds, Prophets and Servants on Isaiah 61. He quoted this parable according to Bob Dylan: Three kings decided that a man named Frank was the key to understanding the latest Dylan record. They crawled into Franks room to see if he could help them. Frank acknowledged that he was indeed the key to the understanding they sought. Well then, said a king in a bit of excitement, could you please open it up for us? Frank, who had been reclining with his eyes closed, suddenly opened them both up as wide as a tiger. And just how

Both breakfasts will cost $15.00, suggested donation, and sign-ups will be held in the weeks leading up to the actual dates.

The selector began the discussion and others added to it. Do plan to attend when you are able. It is informal and fun, -- a good opportunity to add your two cents worth or just listen. One never knows what valuable insights will be revealed.

I, then, wanted to go all in as I still do now; yet it seems to me that Ive just begun and have so far to grow. In Notes Under the Fig Tree, another Episcopal priest, The Revd Jim Lewis writes, The Bible is a work of art about the art of work. To adapt his list of what that work is, Christian communities like ours are to: feed the hungry and confront root causes of hunger and poverty; visit the sick and address hazards that make people ill; welcome newcomers to the church and welcome folks different from ourselves who are moving into the community; pray for governmental officials and work on issues that affect the health and welfare of the country; develop an active youth group and raise questions about how/why children are being subjected to violence and war; organize congregational worship and address social, political, economic and democratic ramifications of organizing for employment. These responsibilities should give us much to ponder as we live toward Labor Day. Each of us might well ask, Is my ministry fulfilling Gods mission? Does what I do bring happiness? ...joy? ...meaning? Am I doing what God is now calling me to do? May our vacations be re-creative.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2013 GRADUATES

Caitlin Ahearn graduated on June 21st with a Bachelor of Science in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University. Congratulations to mother Sue Ahearn. Jessica Nicole Milner, graduated from San Diego State University on May 18 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, write Pam and Phil Milner. Congratulations to the family! Jillian Pehrson graduated on June 11th from Tesoro High School, Rancho Santa Margarita. She is a grandniece of Corinne Stover. Jillian will attend Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, studying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Photography. Jess Peterson will receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Stanford University in June. After that he will continue on at Stanford to work on a master's degree in computer science with an emphasis in human computer interaction. Jeff's proud parents are Kathleen and Mark Peterson. Richard Kenneth Welch, grandson of Lynne Ruedy, received an International Baccalaureate from the Western Academy of Beijing on June 1. He is taking a gap year in China to perfect his Mandarin after which he will attend Austin College, where he has received a scholarship and will continue his language and music studies. His proud grandmother happily attended the graduation in Beijing.

Guibord Center to offer lecture on 'The Bible, Women and Violence'
The Guibord Center will present a lecture by Amy-Jill Levine on "The Bible, Women and Violence" at 1:30pm on Sunday, July 14, at the ProCathedral of St. John, 514 West Adams Blvd., Los Angeles 90007. The talk is part of the Special Speakers Series sponsored by the Guibord Center, which is based at the cathedral and works to increase understanding among the diverse faiths represented in the Los Angeles area. According to a release from the center, "The Bible has been viewed as a misogynist text that treats women as property, sanctions their abuse, promotes their subordination, and proclaims the impossible standard of virgin mother. How has the Bible been used to prevent women's flourishing, and how might a more historically informed and theologically aware reading recover the Bible as an inspirational resource for both women and men?" Levine is a professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences. n February, at our Annual Parish Meeting, we agreed that the parish sanctuary needed to be refurbished and that our goal was to accomplish this during the summer months. The bids for the work came in around $23,000. In the May Love of Mike we noted that it might cost a little more if we repair and refinish the South Wing flooring. To update you on where we stand on paying for the the work that needs to be done, we have a very generous offer of a matching gift of $10,000 to contribute to the project by June 30.2013. As of this date (June 21, 2013) Members of Saint Michaels have donated $11,830. This would cover painting the sanctuary; repairing and refinishing the pews and kneelers and repairing the slab and replacing the flooring. This will be the first time in 22 years that the sanctuary has been renovated. We were hoping that those who pledged this year would add a one-time gift that would make this project possible. We thank you for your generous gifts and look forward to begin the project in mid-August. -- Murry McClaren & Lynn Headley

n Saturday, June 8, at 9am, eleven Saint Michael & All Angels parishioners made their way to the beach to participate in "Praise and Waves." The location of the event was a stone's throw from the Beachcomber Restaurant in Crystal Cove. (Make of note of this description and location, so next time we have a Praise and Waves Day, you can be there, too!) Once we made our way from the Crystal Cove State Park parking lot off PCH, down the windy path and on to the sand, the Saint Michael & All Angels spot was easy to recognize. Brightly colored ribbons of blue, red and yellow on wooden dowels flapped in the wind. We sat in a circle in our beach chairs and/ or beach towels. It was a time to huddle up as June gloom morning temperatures low 61, high of 68 degrees, made their presence known to each of us. A man passing by stopped to ask what our little group was up to. He was a Lutheran and we invited him to join but his morning walk was with his family and grandchildren. At 9:05, our time for Morning Prayer and reflection began. Myrna Ireland welcomed the group and shared a devotional about God's creation and the wonders of the ocean. (Myrna had created the "Praise and Waves" day in hopes of encouraging us to slow down and simplify our lives to make time for the Lord. What better place to find rest and relaxation than the beach?) We then sang, "Morning Has Broken". Next, Julie Jenkins gave a short talk on how we can look at a shell and think about our own lives. Julie reflected on Ann Morrow Lindbergh's book, "Gifts of the Sea". After Julie's reflection, the group was given twenty minutes to wander the . beach, go for a quiet walk along the cove, simply sit and watch the seagulls and/or listen to the waves pounding on the sand. Walking along the beach, there was much to survey.

UNITED THANK OFFERING AWARDS: $1.5 MILLION FOR EPISCOPAL CHURCH, ANGLICAN COMMUNION MISSION AND MINISTRY [Episcopal News Service, June 11, 2013] The United Thank Offering of the Episcopal Church has awarded 48 grants for a total of $1,517,280.91 for the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. The 2013 grants were awarded to projects in 38 Episcopal Church dioceses, six international provinces and the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) Mission offices. Known worldwide as UTO, the United Thank Offering grants are awarded for projects that address human needs and help alleviate poverty, both domestically and internationally. The awards ranged from $2000 to the Diocese of Mississippi to $162,817 to the Diocese of the Dominican Republic. A total of 86 grant applications were received. The awarding of the 2013 grants focused on two (of the five) Anglican Marks of Mission: To respond to human need by loving service; and to seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation. Grants represented many needs in our world, commented Barbi Tinder, United Thank Offering Board President. The top 15 rated grants addressed the teaching of gardening and creative food preparation; providing for continuing clean water; providing wood for warmth during cold months; providing for many forms of special needs for children; creating buildings that built community. The United Thank Offering award funds are derived from the Ingatherings/ funds/contributions received through offerings from the well-known and easily recognizable UTO Blue Box. This year, the Grants Committee conducted all of its work electronically, thereby going green, a process initiated by Sarita Redd, who was president when she died suddenly in January, and Tinder. As a result of the Grants Committees initial effort in creating the new granting process, and the participation of the entire Board in implementing the needed steps, the United Thank Offering Board can now state that the footprint of the Board in terms of environmental impact has been dramatically reduced, explained Tinder. Last year the board estimated approximately 10,000 sheets of paper were used in the granting process; this year the only paper to be used will be 86 official letters to grant applicants with 86 envelopes, and 48 printed award certificates to be presented to grant recipients whose applications were funded! A total of 134 pieces of paper and 86 envelopes! An enormous reduction of use of trees!

In the distance, two surfers paddled against the strength and height of the swells. Overhead, pelicans flew in formation. When everyone returned to the circle after twenty minutes, there was a time of praise. We had each been given a 3x5 card to write our praises on. Melinda Rader and Beth Bianchi took turns reading the cards out loud. Here are the praises that were written. Thank God for our ocean. Thank you for this beautiful beach and morning. Sometimes I feel like driftwood riding along. But knowing where God takes me is where I'm supposed to be. Be lighthearted and known by God. Don't get weighed down by stuff. Always enjoy our gifts. Praise for our overcast days that help us huddle together. Sparkle dew on our faces. Calm the day. Praise God for His loving Kindness. Quiet Times. Natural beauty-surf, sand, shells, flowers. Warm sunshine. Friendship, sharing, giving, love, challenges, family. God, I praise you for your mighty power. God, you are wondrous in your works. Thank you for thinking up the ocean. There is so much to see and do. Lord, I praise your name forever and ever. God, thank you for Jesus, who walked along the sea. What have we learned as man/ woman kind? The glory of the Lord is round about us. The strength of the Lord and the peace of the Lord all in one wave. The glory of all our Lord's creation is evident in the differences of all the God-made shell, sea weed and rocks, birds, et al. Praise be the Lord for gracing us with his presence. I praise God for the wonder of life and the mystery of love, for the gift of grace revealed on those who risk loving, loving themselves, loving other human beings and loving God: Creator and Holy Sustainer. Praise the Lord for His Steadfastness, always there to hear me-night or day. Thanks for the natural state of this place and the capacity to care for it.

MYSTERIOUS SUMMER

ere are two 2013 recommendations for lovers of Anglican/Episcopal detective fiction -- one new and one recent reissue by a favourite author:

New Website for Anglican Communion News Service

The news service of the Anglican Communion has launched its first ever purpose-built news website AnglicanNews.org The site comes almost 20 years after the electronic news service was first launched. Since then subscribers around the world have received thousands of news articles via email. This site brings the Anglican Communions ability to share its stories of life and mission to a whole new level, said Jan Butter who is the Director for Communication at theAnglican Communion Office. Until now weve been restricted to sending news stories to peoples email inboxes. Anglicans and Episcopalians around the world can visit the new site for, not just news, but also comment, feature stories, podcasts, videos and photos. We hope that the diverse content helps to reflect the richness and variety found across our Anglican Communion. Mr Butter added, Existing subscribers will still receive email alerts, but just one a day summarising the newest content on the site. In a comment piece written exclusively for the new website, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby highlighted the importance of effective, grace-filled communication between Anglicans, saying it was part of the gift of the Anglican Communion. If the Communion is a gift, then communication between us is part of that gift. This means sharing insights into what God is calling us to do, wherever we are. It means sharing our witness and our inspiration. He added, There have been times [members of the Anglican Communion] have used communication as a tool to hurt each another. But we must remember that above all we are called to share the love of Christ with the world. That means nothing less than communicating in a way that reflects Christ a way that is loving and generous, patient and forgiving. The site was made possible thanks to funding from The Compass Rose Society and the Church Mission Publishing Company, and to support and guidance from members of Anglican Communion worldwide.

SAINT MICHAELS FINANCIAL UPDATE THRU MAY: Preliminary YTD Income is $230,836. Our YTD Expense is $238,619. The parish Net Ordinary Income is (7,784), which is $28,095 ahead of our plan. Our YTD Pledge Income is $187,218 which is $10,135 above our plan through the end of 2013. This was the first month that our expenses exceeded our income and our pledge income for the month was $12,914 short of our plan. Our total operating cash balance is $121,410 of which $99,109 is designated gifts; leaving a net balance of $22,301. The Endowment Trust has a balance of $ 168,422. Please make sure that you keep your pledges current during the summer months. LOAVES AND FISHES: From July 1August 11, we will collect school supplies such as spiral notebooks, notebook filler paper (wide or collegeruled), colored markers, etc. (But please, no liquid white glue.) Then we will begin collecting large boxes of childrens favorite cereals. Monetary donations are always welcome, too, and checks should be made payable to Saint Michael & All Angels, with Loaves and Fishes on the memo line. (Tax ID #95-2123746) HELP FOR HUNGRY PEOPLE: Thanks to your generosity in donating to this project, we have temporarily suspended our collection of food. "Church Customs Every Episcopalian Ought to Know" is a pamphlet written in 2007. It is a revised edition and in its tenth printing. The writer discusses the custom of kneeling and bowing of heads and the participation of the congregation in the "Amens." Emphasized is the importance of the period before the service begins to keep a time of silence, a time to prepare quietly. The customs discussed may vary from place to place. SUMMER 2013

As some of you know I had a chance to get away recently and travel to the Pacific Northwest. It is country I had never seen before, and I had several times to be alone in nature. It was certainly a welcome respite from the rigors of the last three years at USC, and a time for rejuvenation. Driving through the Willamette River Valley in Oregon, or the farming regions of the Sacramento River Valley, reminded me of my home state of Kentucky, and the farm I lived on for a period of time in my childhood. Perhaps thoughts of my family colored those reminders, as I am coming upon a major change in my life, one that will result in a change at Saint Michaels. In mid-August I will leave California, and consequently my position at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, to be closer to my family. Specifically, I wish to be closer to my parents, who are getting older and starting to really feel the cumulative

effect of years of hard work and the natural progression of aging. While I may not end up in Kentucky, I will certainly be a lot closer, and therefore more able to be of assistance. USC has been very accommodating in aiding this transition, as I am not quite done with the requirements for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree. While I finished all the coursework this past May, I still have qualifying exams and a dissertation to complete. But I have worked it out so that I can accomplish most of this away from Los Angeles. I am grateful to the faculty for finding a way to make that happen. Likewise, I am grateful to Fr. Peter for hiring me at Saint Michaels! I am aware that it was not an easy process, and that a great deal of deliberation took place. It has been a tremendous opportunity for growth, and a wonderful place for fellowship and making music. I also thank the members of all the choirs for their dedication. (I found myself shaking my head in amazement as I wrote that last sentence, thinking of all that we

have done together in such a short time). And most especially, I thank the parish, whose support has meant so much to me. It will be hard to leave my perch in the east wing very hard and I will carry many fond memories of the time Ive spent among you here in sunny Corona del Mar. I look forward to following Saint Michaels from a distance, and hope to have occasion to come back and drop in on you all in the future.
