A HOME THAT WORKS FOR EVERYDAY LIVING

The way you live every day. Thats what should decide how you plan your home. And creating a home that really works is not so difcult. This is the essence of the IKEA Catalog 2009. The following text is an excerpt from the introduction, and its based on an interview with Senior Interior Designer Mia Gustavsson, who was part of the catalog team: The rst few pages of the catalog show parts of a three bedroom home designed for a family of four a place where they can relax, work and play. We wanted to show that a home that works for everyone in the family doesnt have to be very expensive or very difcult to create. Part of the brief was to accommodate many activities and needs in a limited space, making it a welcoming, functional and comfortable home. Few people have the privilege to live in a place with fancy architecture and soaring ceilings, so we started by building walls to recreate a fairly standard box shaped home. The open plan living area allows the entire family to do different things, while still being together. But it also requires clearly dened zones to remain organised and calm so that family members dont get on each others nerves. The most important thing to remember, according to Mia, is to have the courage to plan your home based on your lifestyle rather than conventions:

Designer Tomas Sandell and Chris Martin Our idea with IKEA PS sofa-bed was to make a sofa-bed that is easy to understand and simple to use. We didnt want to hide the function or make it unnecessarily complicated. The sofa is actually so easy to convert to a bed that you can do it with one hand! We also wanted the design to be both playful and practical at the same time. Designer Maria Vinka I usually have different characters and creatures in mind when I design a product - and when I worked with LJUSS USTA it was a gnome. The reason I made the lamp so long and narrow is so it would t everywhere and still look very distinctive. I also wanted LJUSS USTA to provide functional lighting and at the same time serve as a personal sculpture in the room.

Designer Anne Nilsson When I designed LJUSS YSBY I thought about a plump woman with round, feminine shapes. By working with mouth-blown glass I could give the lamp an unexpected, organic and generous look. The strong personality makes LJUSS YSBY stand out and also gives character to really big living rooms. Its exciting that the lamp both works as a sculpture and has smart details like a cord dimmer switch that make it very functional.

Designer Ehln Johansson: The pattern on KRABODA lantern is inspired by a window in an old building in Copenhagen. The building was built as a stable, but today its a modern ofce and I once had my workspace there. On the upper oor there was an old window with the original decorated glass intact. It was like a little jewel in the otherwise raw building. In the same way as that window made the whole building more beautiful, I want KRABODA to enhance and brighten up many rooms.

Designer Anne Nilsson: When I designed the plant pots in the MANDEL series my idea was to make traditional basic pots that suit all types of plants. Thats why they come in many different sizes and have a neutral colour that brings out the plants. You can combine the pots with MANDEL saucer, which has a wide brim that gives the pot character. And the brim is more than just decorative - its practical if you happen to spill a little when watering.

In 2002, IKEA and designer Monik Mulder received the Excellent Swedish Design Award for the watering can IKEA PS VLL.

Designer Monika Mulder: The shape was extra important when I designed IKEA PS VLL water can. I wanted to give it an organic, uid shape so it would harmonize with plants and running water. By using different templates I was able to sculpt a prototype that felt completely perfect. The nal water can has both a shape and color that make you want to have it out on display, instead of hidden away. If you like, you can also use it as a juice pitcher and a vase.

A great space-saver? No, thats not usually a feature you connect with wardrobes. But by using sliding doors, instead of regular doors, there will be more room for everything else. Another great benet with sliding doors is the easy access and immediate overview of whats inside. It can still be traditional as with PAX BIRKELAND or a bit extravagant as with PAX RDAL. When walls and corners complicate things, hinged doors are a better option, like PAX VINSTRA, for example. HEMNES, MALM and VINSTRA are three extensive and popular series for bedrooms, including bed frames, wardrobes, mirrors and much more. And this year were adding even more options: In the HEMNES series, were introducing a linen cabinet in yellow, a wardrobe and bedside table in white and black-brown, as well as a storage bench in red. For the MALM series (see next page), were adding green and transparent gray glass tops for MALM chest of drawers, that protect the surface and add a stylish look to each storage unit. The VINSTRA series (see next page) has been updated with three more chest of drawers, as well as a dressing table with adjustable mirror. Special features in the VINSTRA series include smooth running drawers (some tiltable and extra deep) and adjustable feet. Some VINSTRA units are also equipped with casters for exible placing.

Designer Anna Lerinder My idea with the CELEBER series was to make classic storage jars for the kitchen. I wanted the jars to be so beautiful that you could have them on display - at the same time as they make daily life more functional. Thats why I added close-tting wooden lids that stay securely in place when you move the jar, and different sizes that are suitable for todays storage needs.
