In addition to which, even if there were a movement in Iraq similar to

the worst of possible redoubts, e.g., to go even further in the current
administration's direction, the case does not make their point. In
fact, it rather embarrases them: if that other Republican President,
Eisenhower, who was a professional soldier, had enough sense to stay out
of that kind of situation, then why didn't this one? Wouldn't it make
more sense for the Bush cause to deny we have anything like an organized
resistance going on over there, since you have already announced the end
of all organized resistence? I'm going to get a marguarita—this is
making less sense to me the more I think about it.

Thanks, Dave. The messages that have come back to me and my snooping
around the Internet show that there were cases of sniping, looting, and
cutting of phone lines by armed bands in Germany for some weeks after
the war. The assassinations of two mayors as Dave reports below and the
later murders of three American officers in their apartment in Passau
are also recorded, but neither the perps nor their motives are known.
There is no indication that either the central command or the field
units of the Werwolf {AKA "Wehrwolf"}organization existed after the
surrender except as a concept - - a concept, oddly, in the minds of a few
die-hard Nazis and of a few American [not British?] intell officers and
commanders.
It appears that the White House speech writers have been dredging
through history for scary precedents to today's situation. Watch for the
appearances of Frankenstein's monster, the Golem, and other apparitions
from the past.
Since writing the above, I found an article in today's LA Times by
Maura Reynolds, "Postwar Iraq is No Germany, Historians Say." It
concludes that there was nothing much to the Werewolf bugaboo, surely
nothing like the attacks in Iraq -- which, incidentally, have been
greatly underreported.

I have submitted a question to the H-War e-mail list to see if anyone

on the list can "enlighten."
In the meantime, I rummaged through my library last night. The only
significant discussion I found on the subject was in Antony Beevor's The

Fall of Berlin. He says,

"Ultimately, Werwolf achieved very little, apart from a couple of
assassinations--the mayors of Aachen and Krankenhagen--and the
intimidation of civilians. . . . Many [Werwolf] when sent off by their
controllers to prepare terrorist acts, had sneaked home" (p. 175).
Not only are they making up the intel--they are apparently making up
the history.

Werewolves attacked Allied forces and Germans who cooperated with them
"much like today's Baathist & Fedayeen remnants." I don't recall the
Werewolves and the "Bavarian Redoubt" as being anything more than
propaganda & intelligence fictions. I reread Gordon Wright's "Ordeal of
Total War," which does not mention any postwar German resistance, and
"The West Point Atlas," which calls the Werewolves "an outstanding
failure." Different spooky Internet sources claim that a mayor of a
German town was assassinated in March 45 and that 3 US civilians were
killed in Passau after the war. I will try to read Trevor-Roper's "The
Last Days of Hitler" later today, but ask you if you know any more about
Rice's claims. Having stretched intell to its limits, is the
Administration now doing the same to history? Tom Collier
